Chapter twenty three.
Rex was struggling with his tie and checking his watch every five minutes, The wedding was in a few hours and he still had to get dressed and pick up Ella.
His phone was vibrating again on his bedside table and he briefly glanced at it before ignoring it. It had been ringing for almost an hour and the number was one he didn't recognize.
When it started vibrating yet again he rolled his eyes and grabbed it.
"Hello?"
"Rex....hey...how is it going?" A small voice asked, slightly nervous sounding.
"Evie?"
"Yeah, I was wondering if you would come give me a ride?" She asked.
"From where? Where's Ella?"
"I'm at the hospital...I...didn't call her."
"What? what happened?" He asked.
"My friend Frankie got a new motorcycle and he said I could just sit on it you know? and it fell over I'm fine but you know Ella. She will blow a gasket when she finds out."
He sighed heavily, she was right Ella would be hysterical when she found out and there was no need for that.
"Which Hospital?"
"Saint Martins."
"I'll be there."
"Thanks, Rex, you're the best."
"I know." He replied.
He drove his Jaguar to the hospital mindful not to speed, despite his rush. he just wanted to get Evie and get her home safely so he could take Ella and be on his way. He was nervous about tonight and being out alone with Ella, what would he say to her?
He walked into the emergency room and was directed to the room that Evie was in, she was sitting on the thin white bed with her leg propped up on a pillow and wrapped in a bandage.
"Evie..."
"It's just a sprain," She said quickly.
"Why would you do something like try to ride a motorcycle?"
"I wasn't going to ride it, I just wanted to sit on it and when it started to fall over I put out a foot and...it's just a sprain," She said again.
"That's not the point," He said, shaking his head as he examined her foot.
"You're going to call Ella, aren't you?" She asked.
"Well..."
"Someone should have!"Ella said from the doorway.
Evie and Rex both visibly winced as they turned to look at Ella who was standing in the doorway. Hands on her hips wearing blue jeans and a button up white t-shirt.
"El...please..."
"Honestly Evie! What were you thinking?" Ella scolded.
"Ella.."Rex tried to intervene.
"You stay out of this."
"Ella I didn't mean too I just wanted to try it. Look, I'm not mom and Dad okay? I know you're scared of losing me and I get scared to but you can't live your entire life afraid."
"I'm not having this conversation now, not here. Okay? I'll just get your discharge papers and we will go." Ella said before turning and leaving.
"Sorry Kid looks like the hospital called," Rex said.
"It's okay, I'm sorry I ruined your date tonight." She teased.
"Well...we can still make the reception after we get you safely home."
"What happens there? Are you going to ask her on a real date?"
"Well..actually I..."
"Are you two ready?" Ella interrupted stepping into the room.
"Yes," Evie said with relief swinging so her feet were off the bed.
Rex helped her to her unsteady feet letting her lean heavily against him, Ella rushing forward to offer her crutches.
"I'm sorry, Sir...I don't know how I can leave her to go with you tonight." She said.
"No! Ella, go. I'll be fine once I'm home."
"Evie..."
"Ella...go." Evie insisted.
Ella leaned closer to help her with the crutches and Evie leaned closer to whisper in her ear.
"Don't be afraid."
Ella rolled her eyes but after finishing helping Evie gain her balance agreed to let Rex follow them home and then leave for the reception.

"I got a text from Rex, he said something came up but he'll be here for the reception," Laurel said.
"Well, isnt' that just like him?" Her mother scolded.
"I'm sure he has a good reason," Her father piped in.
Laurel was sitting in the very last pew of the large church, to her right an empty seat and to her left both of her loving parents. After her late-night confession, they had cried together and she promised to stay with them until she was ready to go home.
She felt better now that the truth was out in the open about Ivan, their life, her life and what happened but she missed having him near her. Her finger felt empty and she felt naked without her ring.
The wedding started the traditional way the groom and groomsmen lined the front of the church.
The flower girls and ring bearers looked adorable and the bridesmaids all filed in. The Bride began to float down the aisle and Laurel forced herself to try and at least look as if she was paying attention as the crowd rose to their feet.
When the Bride reached the end of her walk and everyone sat Laurel was vaguely aware of a person sliding in next to her. She glanced to her right and saw Ivan.
She opened her mouth to speak but he shook his head pointing to the front of the Church where the wedding had begun.
She fell silent and he reached out to take her hand in his, stroking the back of her knuckles with his thumb. She should have paid attention to the beautiful wedding upfront but all she could do was stare at him.
"I'm sorry," He whispered softly, low enough only she heard him.
She shook her head and he reached into his pockets, he was wearing a nice suit but looked as if he had hurried into it.
The couple upfront had started their vows when Ivan pulled out their rings, his and Laurels lay nestled together in his palm.
She stared at the bands of gold and her diamond sparkling in the lights and then looked back at Ivan.
He took a deep breath and he seemed nervous, then he picked up her ring and held it out to her. She waited for only a second before holding out her hand and letting him slip the rings back onto her finger.
She took his from his palm and slid it onto his finger back where it belonged, he smiled at her before leaning in and kissing her deeply.
He pulled away just as the wedding came to an end and the new happy couple started down the aisle.
Laurel wiped away the few happy tears that threatened to break away.
"I love you," He said.
"I love you too."
"I want you to marry me, Laurel. I want you to be my wife again for real, I want to take you to France on our honeymoon and I'm going to retire from the club. I'll keep stock so we have money but...I'm done."
"You don't have to quit the club..."
"Yes I do, because I'm going to be too busy making babies to care about anything else," He said leaning forward for another kiss.
She blushed but didn't argue further, as long as she was with Ivan it didn't matter to her.
"Ivan, glad you could make it." Her father said from her other side.
"Thank you, sir."
"I told them everything," Laurel said.
She saw him briefly look concerned then he sighed heavily and stood, her and her parents standing as well.
"I'm sorry about what happened to Laurel...I...I should have been there."
"Dear boy, we don't blame you. That could have happened anywhere, anytime. What matters is that you love our daughter." Her father said.
"I do, more than anything."
"Good." Her father said.
Her parents turned and exited the church with the other wedding guests but Laurel couldn't resist wrapping her arms around Ivans' neck and pulling him close.
"I didn't think you'd come back." She admitted.
"I didn't either but I belong with you. We'll get married and go to France and then we can live wherever you want."
"When can we get married?" She asked.
"As soon as you want. We can wait if you're not ready yet."
"No, I want too."
He leaned down for another kiss, pulling her as close as possible.
"Do we have to go to this reception?" He asked when he pulled away, resting his forehead against hers.
"We should probably make an appearance." She said with a giggle as he kissed the end of her nose.
"A short one?"
"Very short," She replied.
