Warm Leather
I run out the door and outside into the cool, crisp darkness. I realize after I'm there that I didn't even think of what I wanted to say. I guess it's up to him to talk, he's the one who's been silent all this time. I said what I had to say in that one simple text. I look around and don't see him anywhere. I hug my arms tightly to my chest to keep myself warm in the piercing night air. I was in such a rush to get out the door, I forgot to grab a jacket. I stand on the hotel balcony, with my heart beating a mile a minute. I'm scared, there's so many things he could say to me. A few I want to hear and others that would crush me completely. I make myself stand taller despite my fear, I won't let myself look afraid.
I feel warm leather hovering my shoulders. I keep looking forward, trying to remain as calm as possible. I focus on a faraway star I managed to pinpoint.
"Rinnie, you really shouldn't have texted me that." His voice is everything I've been needing. Hearing him say my name nearly brings me to my knees, but I don't show him that, I stay still.
"You shouldn't have left."
He moves in front of me, making me loose my focus. "I know. There were just some things I had to take care of. It was torture being away from you. I hated every second of it."
"Why did you want me to come out here? Do you have any idea what time it is?"
He nods. "I just got back in town, I had to go to my hometown for a few days."
"You couldn't bring me on this little adventure or even tell me about it?"
He takes a step closer to me. "It was too dangerous."
"Oh, so naturally you brought Prince?" I push him.
"Eli helped watch him when I couldn't. I didn't want to leave you with that responsibility, I'm the one who's supposed to be taking care of him."
I narrow my eyes. "We're supposed to be a team. Where is he now?"
"He's with my friend. She agreed to watch him while I talk to you."
I stare at him. "The one you love."
"Yes."
I nod, angrily. "Why bother coming back?"
"I'm not heartless enough to miss Alec and Vanessa's big day. Then, I saw your message and decided I couldn't wait to see you."
"So, if I didn't text you, you wouldn't have come to see me?"
He sighs. "Not right now."
"Cool." I step away from him.
"Rinnie, it's late. I would've thought you'd be sleeping."
I shrug. "Oh, I don't really do that anymore."
"Sleep?"
"Yeah."
His expression softens. "Why not?"
"I have nightmares you die every night." I chuckle. "Last night, I was the one who killed you in my nightmare, or maybe it was a dream because that sounds great right about now."
He cocks his head. "I'm sorry."
I shrug. "It's whatever."
"It sounds traumatizing."
"What kind of danger are you in?"
Grant just looks away, so I continue. "I trust my intuition, especially when it comes to you, and right now I can't shake the feeling you're in a lot of trouble. The fact you said I couldn't come with you because it's dangerous just proves my point."
He takes yet another step towards me, I want to yell at him and tell him to stay back, but I can't make myself. "If I tell you then it's even more dangerous for you."
"I don't care."
"I do." He's so close I can see the brown ring around his light blue eyes.
"Grant, I want to help you, but that's impossible if you won't tell me what's going on."
He pulls his jacket tighter around me. "I promise I'll tell you everything, just not right now."
I don't like his answer, but despite everything I still trust him. "Okay."
Grant lifts my chin up to meet his eyes. "I want you back Rinnie."
What's his deal? "Really, cause you seemed like you hated me when you left."
"I'm so sorry about that, I overacted. It's just he always does this. Every girl I've ever liked has chosen Grayson. I know it's stupid and insecure, but I got scared when you told me you two kissed. I thought I was going to lose you, so I decided I was going to walk away before you could leave. I know what happened wasn't intentional, you would never kiss him while you were with me unless something forced you to. I knew that night that something weird happened. Someone did something to make you believe you were kissing me. Someone who was trying to get back at me."
There's one part of his speech that stood out to me. "Who is trying to get back at you?"
"I swear I can't tell you. I would if I could." I can hear the stress in his voice, his pleading with me not to push this.
I can't help but feel bad for Grant, but I'm still mad at him. "Why didn't you talk to me about this sooner?"
"I couldn't. If I did, things would've been so much worse."
I throw my arms up in the air. "I don't know what to think. I love you, but I swear if you make a fool out of me Grant Goldsworthy...."
"I won't, I promise." He grabs my waist and pulls me into him. "I just want you."
The guilt starts to kick in. "Grant, when you left, I was really hurt, and I did some stupid things."
"What kind of stupid things?"
I look at him and take a deep breath. "I've been kissing Grayson."
His eyes get wide. "Still?"
"He was the only thing I had left that reminded me of you at all and part of me wanted to hurt you for how you treated me and for leaving. I'm sorry."
He moves a piece of my hair behind my ear. "If you had to choose between us right now, who would you choose?"
"You." I say automatically.
"You won't kiss him again?"
I shake my head. "No, I don't think he would want to kiss me now that you're back either."
"Then, let's just leave that in the past, okay? At least now I know you two have gotten it out of your system."
I smile. "I've missed you."
"I've missed you too."
I get up on my tiptoes and run my hand through his hair, it's still as perfect as it was when he left.
"Oh, and one other thing I need to tell you." Grant smirks.
"Oh no." I joke.
He leans over and whispers in my ear, "I love you more."
Grant opens my hand and places something in it. "I believe this is yours."
"What's this?" My voice comes out small.
He smiles. "I needed to have a piece of you with me at all times."
"My scrunchie?"
I always wore this soft pink scrunchie, I've had it for years. I was bummed when I realized it was gone after Grant left, but I never in a million years would've thought he stole it. It makes me feel so happy to know that Grant needed me too.
"It reminds me of you. It even kind of smells like you."
I can't help but laugh. "That's so weird.....and sort of romantic."
He smirks. "You know that's my style."
He grabs my hand. "I'll see you in the morning?"
"You're not coming in?" I try to hide the disappointment in my voice to no avail.
"Not if Grayson is there."
"You can't forgive me and not him." I chastise him.
"You thought it was me, but he knew who he was kissing."
"Grant!" I whine.
Grant takes my hand. "Don't worry, I'll get over it, I just don't want to see him until the wedding. Grayson and I have been friends for a long time, this is just how we deal with our fights."
Before I can say anything else, he kisses my cheek. "I'll see you tomorrow Rinnie. I love you."
"I love you too." I respond.
Grant walks away, leaving me with his jacket and mixed emotions.
