Jail Time
"Have you seen my boyfriend, Grant? He's about this tall with bright blue eyes and dirty blonde hair?" I pop up on my tip toes and raise my arms as tall as I can manage to emphasize Grant's height. I'm slightly intoxicated, which means I'm too out of it to pay mind to the fact that Grant and I are supposed to be pretending to be broken up.
The bleach blonde girl with brown eyes shakes her head. "Sorry hunny, I haven't seen him."
I cringe. I hate when people call me hunny. "Okay, well thanks anyways."
I sigh and sit down on a bar stool. I haven't seen Grant or Grayson since they said they were going to use the restroom. That was almost 30 minutes ago. I scuff, I thought only girls traveled in packs.
I do a final glance around the bar. My eyes light up when I see Grant. I jump out of my seat and walk quickly over to him. He appears to be in an intense discussion with a short, stalky man with dark brown hair that hushes as I near them.
"Hey!" I smile at him.
He looks me over. "Hey."
"When did you put on the baseball cap?" I squint at him. "And where is Grayson?"
He smirks. "Have you been watching me?"
I roll my eyes at him. "Thirty minutes is a long time you know. I thought maybe you or Grayson fell in."
"I don't fall, or know who Grayson is, sorry gorgeous." I watch as he waves the guy he was talking to away, focusing his complete attention on me.
I freeze. What game is he playing? "I wasn't aware we were role playing."
"We can be, but I should probably know your real name first." He looks amused.
Something about him is different, darker. It suddenly hits me. "You're not Grant."
He sighs. "I was afraid you weren't just coming up here to hit on me."
"I'm so sorry, I thought you were someone else." I take a step back.
He squints at me. "Who?"
I speak up instantly. "You wouldn't know him."
"Try me." He challenges me.
I take a deep breath, feeling guilty. "My boyfriend."
He laughs at my expense. "Oooh, that's gotta hurt."
"You look so much like him." I look at him, amazed by his similar facial structure.
He shifted. "So, you think I'm hot."
It wasn't a question. "I should go find him."
His voice stops me as I turn to walk away, he even sounds similar to Grant. "Well, if he looks like me and was with a guy with dark brown curly hair, he went out back."
"Okay, thank you." I stare at him.
He shrugs. "No problem." He lifts his hat to reveal a gorgeous head of black curly hair that he plays with for a second before placing the hat back on his head. There are so many attractive people around me lately that it makes me feel a little insecure.
I stop myself from looking too long and speed out the back door to find Grant and Grayson.
I just make it out the door when I get a call from an unknown number. I hesitate but ultimately decide to answer.
"Hello?" I pray it's Grant.
"Rinnie?" My prayers are answered. Grant sounds exhausted. I can't help but smile when I hear his voice.
"Grant? Where are you guys? You'll never believe what just happened! Also, why are you calling me from an unknown number?" The words anxiously rush to get out.
There is a moment of silence on the other side. "Rinnie, I need you to promise not to freak out."
"What did you do?" I say nervously.
"Grayson and I got arrested." His voice sounds relaxed but there's an urgency in it.
My heart drops into my stomach. "WHAT?! You were gone for a half hour!"
"I told you not to freak out." He says calmly.
"I never agreed." I take a deep breath, freaking out isn't going to help anything. "What happened?"
"I promise I'll explain everything, but can you please come pick Grayson and I up?"
I am already searching for my keys. I start to panic when I realize they're not in my purse. I curse under my breath.
"Looking for these?" The deep voice sends chills up my spine.
I turn slowly to see Grant's doppelganger. "Where did you find those?"
He smirks. "You dropped them while you were running out the door."
"You can't blame me, I just found out my boyfriend has a twin."
"That's a bold assumption." He chuckles. " Wouldn't he tell you if he had a twin and would I seem so surprised when you asked me about him if I knew him?"
He has point, there's no way Grant would have hid that from me all these years, but that doesn't mean they don't know each other. I narrow my eyes at him. "So are you saying that you've never met him?"
"Who knows, I know a lot of people."
I reach for the keys, I'm in no mood for the games he is clearly playing. "Well, you guys should seriously consider getting a DNA test, the resemblance is uncanny."
"I'm a very busy guy, but maybe someday."
I shrug. "Hard to say, he's pretty busy himself. You can find him all over NASCAR though, he's super good." I smile at him. "Thank you for returning these."
He nods. "Have a good night."
"You too." I say heading towards my car.
I get into my car and quickly drive to jail.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
"Come on, you know I'd fess up if I were guilty." Grant is standing against the front desk of the police station, talking to another young officer.
"Grant." I say as I come up behind him.
When he sees me, I can physically see the stress leave his body. He pulls me against him and turns to the other policeman.
"She's our ride."
The policeman nods, "Just make sure you fill out that paperwork."
Grant looks at him and shakes his head, "Don't be that guy Jim."
Jim tries not to smile and looks away.
Just as I'm about to ask where he is, I see Grayson coming out of a doorway with a pretty, dark-haired policewoman. Her eyes light up when he talks.
"I see you two have been handling prison really well." I turn towards Grant with a slight smile.
He looks down at me. "I practically live here at this point, between work and all the times I've been arrested."
"When do I get to know what happened?"
"Let's get Gray and head out." He makes a move towards Grayson, but I grab his hand.
"He seems busy. Come on, how fun would double dates be?"
Grant considers. "Well, I'm anything but a c*ck block."
"So, while he's talking why don't you fill me in?"
He takes my hand and guides me to some empty gray leather seats.
"First of all, I'm innocent."
I try not to laugh at his animated frustration. "I believe you."
He looks around. "Maybe I'm a little guilty, but..."
"Grant, out with it!" I urge him.
"I stole a baby." He says as if he is struggling to breath.
I burst out laughing at his joke. "Grant this is serious."
His expression turns serious. "Rinnie, I stole a baby."
He lowers his voice and looks nervous. Making my heart drop. I realize he isn't kidding about this.
"What do you mean you stole a baby?" Grant has done a lot of reckless, stupid things but this has to take the cake.
"Can we talk about this later please? I'm not trying to lose my job and freedom in the same night." He runs his large hand through his disheveled hair.
I want to tell him no, but then I realize where we are. I nod slowly.
We sit in the seats, without words until Grayson walks over.
"She was nice." Grayson smirks and walks toward us.
Grant looks at him and grins. "Nice or nice looking?"
"Got her number." Grayson turns his arm over to show a number written above his wrist. "I probably won't use it though."
I look up at him. "Why not? She's pretty and seems really into you."
He shrugs. "I don't do the whole relationship thing." He bites his lip and stares towards the front desk. "I'm not very good at it."
I stand up and we all walk towards the exit. "Don't worry, we'll teach you. Won't we Grant?"
I pat Grant on the shoulder.
"Rinnie, I know that I seem like an angel, but I'm no miracle worker." He opens the door.
I roll my eyes. "Let's go."
