Busted
Her phone makes a loud bang as it hits the ground.
"What the...?" She grabs her face.
I narrow my eyes at her. "Regina Goldsworthy?"
She looks at me, trying to remember me. She never will, we never met. "Do I know you?"
"No, but I know everything about you."
Regina removes her hand from her face to point a finger into my chest. "I don't know who you think you are, but you're messing with the wrong person."
"I can assure you I'm not." I say cooly. "You get paid to send kids off to creeps, yeah?"
Her eyes turn into slits that remind me of snake eyes. "What?"
Now it's my turn to poke my finger into her chest. "What, did you think you got away with it? Did you really think no one would ever find out?"
She actually has the audacity to laugh. "You have no idea what you're talking about little girl. I guarantee you've never been through the difficult times I have."
I'm not one for confrontation, but in that moment I see red and loose control of myself. I know that I'm punching her, pulling her hair, scratching her, but I can't stop.
I don't know how long I'm on her before V is holding me back. "Woah, what is going on?!"
"Ask her." I keep my eyes narrowed at Regina.
"Ma'am, I'm going to need you to come with us." I hadn't even noticed the young police officer standing in front of me.
V pushes me behind her. "You're taking her to jail?!"
"Ma'am don't intervene!" The officer tells V.
She moves in on him. "Oh, I'm intervening." She points to me. "This is my best friend and I can assure you that she didn't do that unprovoked. So, I suggest you take that lady in and ask her what she did before I sue you."
I gently tap V. "It's okay V, I'll go with them. I'm sure they just want to ask me some questions and I'll be back in time for mani-pedis."
The officer scuffs. "Ma'am you just assaulted an elderly woman, you're not going home anytime soon."
"Elderly?!" Regina cries through her black eyes and grabs her chest with her bleeding arms. "I'm only 35!"
I roll my eyes. "Yeah, times like 35 years ago."
She dives at me, but another officer holds her back. "You little..."
"Alright, let's get you out of here." The young officer motions for me to follow him. I reluctantly oblige.
V calls out to me. "I'll meet you there with Shane!" She cups her hands in an effort to make her voice louder. "Tell them you're not talking until you see your lawyer!"
I give her a thumbs up and keep walking, still not calmed down.
When we get to the police station, V and Shane are waiting for me.
"Excuse me? I'd like a moment alone with my client please." Shane speeds over to me.
The officer groans. "Okay, but please hurry."
Shane shows his pearly whites and nods." It won't be long at all."
As soon as we're alone in a room, Shane begins interrogating me. "Okay, what happened?"
"I did the world a favor and smacked the crap out of that psycho." I cross my arms and sit down.
Shane takes a deep breath. "Can you explain to me why that was a favor to the world?"
I shrug. "She's psychotic. At least now the police might pay attention to her, she should've been her awhile ago."
His forehead wrinkles in concentration. "You think she's a criminal?"
"Oh yeah." I nod enthusiastically.
"What did she do?" He inches his seat closer to mine, giving me his full attention.
I suddenly get nervous. I can't tell anyone about this, Grant would die. "Oh, umm, a lot of terrible things."
"Do you have proof of these terrible things?"
I bring my knees to my chest and say a meekly. "Yes."
Shane brightens up. "Okay, good! That's good! Where can I retrieve this proof?"
"You can't." I turn away from him.
"You got rid of it?" He looks at me, incredulously.
"No, but it's not my evidence. I got it off of somebody else."
He sits back, thinking hard. "Okay, that's okay. Can you tell me what she did? I may be able to get some evidence of my own."
"I can't tell you."
He inhales, trying his best to be patient. "Is there someone who can?"
"No." My voice cracks. "Shane, I really appreciate you coming to help, but I think I'm just going to have to suffer through whatever sentence they give me."
Shane places a hand on my arm. "The most they'll give you is a night in prison for this. You have no priors and she's hurt but not that badly. If you're okay with that, I'd plead guilty. However, if this woman did something as bad as you say, I don't think I'd just admit defeat on this one."
I try to smile but it feels awkward. "Don't worry, I'm not done with her, but I think I can manage one night here. I may even get to practice my fighting skills for the next time."
He laughs. "Yeah, let's not have a next time."
"Thanks Shane." I smile effortlessly this time.
"It's no problem at all!" Shane guides me to the interrogation room, and I spend the next few hours being asked very detailed questions I can't answer. When we finished up, they seemed way too happy to put me behind bars. I used my one phone call to call V, who was still waiting for me at the station. I told her I was going to be okay staying the night here and I begged her not to tell anyone about this until I knew what to say to everyone. She wasn't thrilled about it but she agreed.
I was stuck in the cell with a larger-than-seems-humanly-possible man, who smelt like the outdoors.
When I uncomfortably inch into the cell, he smirks. "I thought we wasn't allowed to have girls in these cells with us men."
"They must've run out of cells." I move to the other end of the cell, which was only like two steps.
"I shouldn't even be in here. I'm a good country man. All I did was borrow a friends tractor, but he got all mad at me and claimed he didn't know me. All cause he found out I use to date his wife back in the day."
I met his eyes for the first time, they're hazel. "I'm sorry to hear that! That must've been really frustrating!"
"It was. I didn't even get to finish using it. My yard is probably a mess now!"
I feel bad for this guy. It seems like he was genuinely hurt by his ex-friend's betrayal. "Karma is real, he'll regret it if he doesn't already."
"What are you in for little missy?"
I hate being called little missy, but we both have bigger issues to worry about than what he calls me. "I got into a fight with a crazy woman."
He grins, showing off his really nice teeth. "Man, you've barely got a scratch on you."
I grin. "Yeah, I don't think she was expecting it."
"Well good for you little missy." He sincerely looks proud.
"Thanks!" I yawn. "It took a lot out of me. Do you prefer the top or bottom bunk?"
"That's up to the lady."
I feel bad for being afraid of him, he's a very nice man. "You are quite the gentleman."
I climb into the bottom bunk and wrap the short, thin blanket around me. "Goodnight."
The bed moves as he makes his way to the top bunk. "Sleep tight."
I wasn't kidding when I said the fight drained me, I'm soon trapped in a horrific nightmare. The nightmare consists of Grant getting assaulted by a bunch of old women and me being tied down. I was unable to stop it and forced to watch.
In the midst of this heartbreaking scenario, I'm woken up by firm hands shaking my shoulders.
"Hey." A voice whispers in my ear as my eyes slowly open.
I squirm and try to fight the voice. "I've killed people before!" I yell.
"No, you haven't." The voice starts laughing. "Rinnie, it's me."
My eyes dart to the dark figure. "Grant?!"
He moves in so I can see him better. "Wanna come home?"
"How did you find me? Please tell me you didn't talk to V, I really trust her."
Grant smirks. "I work here Rinnie, remember? I was on duty when everything went down."
I hug him. "I'm so sorry Grant!"
"Why did you attack Regina?" He asks, while hugging me back.
I kiss his cheek. "I don't like her."
"You know she's my mom."
I bury my head into him. "Yeah, I figured that out."
"So, why did you fight her?" He desperately searches my eyes for an answer.
I have to be smart about this or Grant will find out I have his diary before I figure out what's wrong. My hands find their way to his face. I have to go with my gut and pray I'm assuming correctly. "I thought it was weird that you weren't coming to court. It was really bugging me. So, when I saw your phone light up with a message from your mother saying she wanted to meet up, I got upset. I know how much you despise her, and I didn't even care why you don't like her, I don't like her either. I politely asked her to leave LA and things sort of escalated from there."
"When will you learn that reading my messages while I'm not looking never has a good outcome?" He looks sad.
"I'm sorry, I just got freaked out when you said you weren't coming to court. I knew something was wrong and I wanted to help. I should've stayed out of it." I try to get him to look at me but he refuses.
He takes my hand and helps me stand. "We're not Bonnie and Clyde, okay? This isn't you."
I follow him out of the cell. "I know, I didn't mean for things to get this bad."
"It's okay, let's just forget about it."
Before we leave the cell I stop and insist on writing a goodbye/good luck letter to my one and only cell mate. I tell him that I will try to help him get out of here, since I 'know a guy.' I can tell Grant thinks this is weird but he stands back and lets me do it anyways.
On the way out of the police station, Grant yells, "Whoever put my girlfriend in a cell with a large hillbilly is getting fired!"
"Grant, it's okay, he was a very nice man!" I plead with him.
Just as we walk out I see Fred in a trench coat and fedora go up to the station yelling, "Will this get my cowboy out?"
Grant and I can't stop laughing, running out the door to avoid him.
When we get into the car I crawl on his lap. "You bailed me out of jail?"
Grant looks taken aback. "You'd already befriended that weird cowboy by the time I got there. I couldn't let you stay in there overnight or God knows what would've happened."
"I would've slept." I smirk and press my hands against his abs. "Can I take this off?"
"You ask permission to do that now?"
I carefully lift his shirt over his head. "Yes, I value you."
"What is this Rinnie?" I can't tell if he's pleased or displeased.
"No more questions." I kiss him softly.
