Chapter 4: Teammates

P.O.V. [Name]

I groaned a bit as I began to stretch. Out of all the ways, I thought my first night at Beacon would go. Sleeping on the floor wasn't one of them. I brought a few covers here with me so I wasn't too uncomfortable but even so, laying on the ground wasn't exactly the best way I had spent the night. Especially when there were hundreds of others doing the exact same thing. I could hear a few people snoring as well making it that much harder to sleep.

I feel sorry for whoever has to share a dorm with them, and hopefully, I'm not one of those people. As I woke up, I began to gather the cover I used last night and began to make my way towards the bathroom to get ready for the day. Honestly, I couldn't care what I look like at the moment, but I'm sure whoever my teammate is will. As I walked into the bathroom I began to quickly go through my morning routine. Starting with brushing my teeth, and then going into a shower.

After I washed myself I began to make my way towards the cafeteria so that I could get something to eat. I guess that is one of the perks of getting to attend Beacon. I don't need to worry about what I'm going to eat because the school would always provide something for us. Probably the only good thing about being forced to come to this place. After I got a plate I began to look around at the several students in front of me.

I'm honestly a bit surprised I haven't been recognized yet. Then again I've always heard the best way of hiding is to do it in plain sight. So maybe I shouldn't be that surprised that no one's recognized me yet. After all, what kind of criminal would go to a school for huntsmen in training willingly? On paper it sounded completely insane, and yet here I was. As I ate I looked for anyone who seemed like they might make a good partner for me.

I know they establish teams early in the year so if at all possible I want to be able to have some influence over that. I definitely want to avoid anyone who seemed too eager to prove themselves. They'd probably put together the fact that I'm a criminal in no time. Also don't want to go up against anyone who seemed out of my league like that Pyrrha girl that's supposed to be joining as well.

After I finished eating I stood up with my plate and began to make my way towards the area I saw people putting their dishes. As I did I heard a slightly familiar voice start to echo throughout the building. "Would all first-year Beacon students report to Beacon cliff for initiation. Again, all first-year students report to Beacon cliff immediately," The voice said before eventually fading away. So the initiations going to be at the cliffs?

I wonder what they're planning to do. Are they just going to have us fight each other? That seemed like the simplest option. It was a classic exhibition of skill, those who seemed competent in their abilities were allowed in, while those that fell short of Beacon's standards were left behind. It seemed like the easiest and quickest way to make sure those that were worthy got into the school.

I'm not sure how they'd assign teams if that were the case, but even so, I'm sure they would have had something figured out. After all, they had more than enough time to plan all this out. When I arrived on top of the cliff I saw several others already there, as well as several small stone platforms with Beacon's logo on them. As well as several people standing on top of the small platforms.

When I saw this I began to do the same standing on one of the platforms in line. As I did I saw several others beginning to gather around as well. And shortly after that, the two from yesterday walked in front of us. The first was obvious the headmaster of Beacon academy Ozpin. He was on a few magazines as well as the pamphlet for Beacon so figuring out who he was wasn't that hard. The blonde, however, well I wasn't sure about her.

She seemed to be rather serious, or at the very least she took her job very seriously. I haven't seen her around the school much, but every time I did she was with Ozpin. So maybe she was his assistant? But she did seem to be a bit too serious for something like that. So I'm not really sure about her. After it seemed like all the students had arrived Ozpin cleared his throat as he looked at us.

"For years you've trained to become warriors. And today your abilities will be evaluated in the Emerald Forest," Ozpin said as he looked at us. So we're not fighting then, I can't imagine what we're going to be doing in the forest though.

"Now, I'm sure many of you have heard rumors about the assignment of teams. Well allow us to put an end to your confusion. Each of you will be given teammates, today," The blonde said as he looked at us. When she said this it caught my attention since I was curious about what we were going to do for teams, or at the very least who we were going to be partnered with.

"These teammates will be with you for the rest of your time here at Beacon. So it is in your best interest to be paired with someone with whom you can work well. That being said, the first person you make eye contact with after landing will be your partner for the next four years," Ozpin said as he looked at us. I was a bit surprised hearing this, so it really was just luck when it came to who you were paired with.

"After you've partnered up make your way to the northern end of the forest. You will meet opposition along the way, do not hesitate to destroy everything in your path, or you will die. You will be monitored and graded for the remainder of your initiation, but our instructors will not intervene," Ozpin said as he looked at us. Once again I was a bit caught off guard by this. So they were just willing to let people die during the initiation?

I didn't realize the entrance exam was so harsh. Then again I guess their job is to kill monsters and stop people like me. So I guess it makes sense that they need to be a little harsh every now and then. "You will find an abandoned temple at the end of your path containing several relics. Each pair must choose one, and return to the top of the cliff. We will regard that item, as well as your standing, and grade you appropriately. Are there any questions?" Ozpin asked as he looked at us only for someone to speak up and be promptly ignored.

"Good! Now take your positions," Ozpin said as he looked at us. When he said this I braced myself as I saw someone getting tossed into the woods. I wasn't sure how or why but I knew that I was going to be thrown into the woods. However, this became clear a few moments later when I heard something click as someone was launched into the air. It seems like the platforms beneath us was what was throwing us.

A moment later I felt my knees buckle as I was thrown into the air. When I was I began to look around trying to find anything that I could use to my advantage. I didn't see anything and the ground was getting closer, so I did the only thing I knew to do I grabbed my tonfa's and readied myself for the incoming blow. When I got close to a tree I raised my hand and hooked a branch with my tonfa only for it to snap and for me to continue to fall.

As I did my eye's widened and I braced myself for the impact. As I did I felt a strange tingling sensation over my body and felt the ground beneath my feet. When I did I opened my eyes and saw that I was indeed on the ground. I knew that tingle all too well. It was my semblance, I wish I could get control over it instead of it just happening at random. Fighting would be so much easier if I was able to do that whenever I wanted.

I think this might have been the first time it's ever helped me rather than hinder me in some way. When I landed I began to look around trying to figure out where my semblance had placed me. I didn't see the cliff anymore so it seemed like it might have turned me around as well. I began to look before eventually sighing and beginning to climb up one of the trees so that I could figure out where I was.

When I reached the top I began to look around and was eventually able to find the cliff once again. When I did I jumped down and turned in the opposite direction. I know we weren't supposed to start heading towards the temple until we've been partnered up but even so it still seemed like the smart thing to do. After all, that's where everyone was going to be heading anyway, so it just made sense to start heading there instead of staying near the beginning looking for someone to partner up with.

As I was walking I began to hear someone in the distance. It sounded like they were fighting something. I smiled hearing this and began to walk towards the source of the sound. I'll just watch from the sidelines and see what they're capable of. If they seem like they could be trouble then I'd rather just avoid them rather than risk having to fight them one day.

I watched as he ran up to the Ursa and flipped kicking the creature in the head as he did. However, the kick seemed to be for forcing the creature to look down rather than actually doing damage. As it did the male grabbed two small daggers and stabbed it in the eyes causing the Ursa to scream in pain and raised itself up. As it did the male kicked off the Ursa before rushing forward and beginning to slash the creature in several different areas.

As he did the creature swung down him still being unable to see. As it did the male moved back out of the way before once again moving in close and slashing the creature's throat. As he did, the Ursa fell to the ground and began to fade into dust. As he did the male smiled and grabbed his daggers before rubbing them against the cloak that he was wearing. He's using two daggers, I can't say I have much experience using daggers but I like my chances against them.

So I stepped out and began to walk towards the male. When I did he turned to look at me and we stared at each other for a moment before he smiled and raised his arms letting his daggers slide down his sleeves. He had long messy black hair that he tied back into a low-hanging ponytail as well as golden-brown eyes. "Hey," he said as he looked at me. "So I guess we're partners no huh?" The male asked as he looked at me.

"Yeah, seems that way," I said as I looked at the male in front of me. He seemed a lot more casual than I was expecting from someone like him. Then again I guess it makes sense. I'm supposed to be his partner, and it's not like he can be all business for four straight years.

"My name is Knives," The male said as he walked up to me before extending his hand out. "Nice to meet you," the male said as he looked at me with a slight smile. When he did I took his hand and looked at him a bit skeptically.

"Knives?" I asked as I looked at the male in front of me.

"Yeah, yeah, yeah, go ahead and make whatever comment you have. I've heard them all before," Knives said as he looked at me. So he was even aware that he had an unusual name.

"Right, well I'm [Name]," I said as I looked at the male in front of me extending my hand. When I did the male smiled and took my hand shaking it.

"Right, so to the temple then?" He asked as he looked at me and I nodded as we began to walk. As we were walking I couldn't help but notice the large sword he had on his back. A large sword like that would have been a lot more effective when it came to dealing with someone.

"You're fighting style is pretty unique. I've never seen someone that uses three blades before," I said as I looked at the male in front of me. When I did he looked at me a bit confused before shaking his head.

"I think you might have misseen something when I was fighting. I only have two blades, not three," Knives said as he looked at me.

"What about the weapon on your back?" I asked as I looked at the male in front of me.

"Huh? Oh sorry, no that one's off-limits," Knives said as he looked at me.

"Really now?" I asked as I looked at the male in front of me. So he had the blade but refused to use it? I can't imagine why, but I guess that's none of my business really.

"Yeah, I won't bore you with the whole story. Plus it works great as a faint," Knives said as he looked at me. I guess that's true, if I hadn't seen him using those daggers I never would have seen it coming if we were to fight. He has such a massive sword it's almost impossible not to notice, so of course, I'd be expecting someone to use that and not two small daggers they have concealed on their person.

"Makes sense," I said as I looked at him.

"What about you? Can't keep me in the dark forever with what you use," The male said as he looked at me. I guess that was true, I'd eventually be fighting someone even if I did make it through the forest without encountering a creature of grimm. Plus trying to hide it might just make me look suspicious so I grabbed one of my weapons and let it transform in front of him.

"Nothing special really," I said as I looked at the male in front of me.

"Ah, so you like to get up close and personal huh? I can respect that," The male said as he looked at me.

"That's part of it," I said as I turned my tonfa around and fired a bullet ahead of us. "It's also just quicker to fire," I said as I looked at him.

"Right, I imagine those bullets can also be useful when trying to close the distance as well," He said as he looked at me.

"Yeah," I said as I looked at the male in front of me. At the moment I had mixed feelings about the male in front of me. On the surface, our conversation just seemed like a way of getting to know each other better. And yet I couldn't shake this feeling that there was a bit more to this guy than he was letting on. On the surface, he seemed like a nice enough guy, but every time I looked at him I could help but feel like this was just a façade. Almost like he was trying to size me up or something.

I guess it's just from where I've been living as a criminal almost all my life but I tend to have a good sense about these types of things. Seeing a person's true intentions and the things they try to hide or refuse to mention. I hope he didn't recognize me and that's why I'm getting this feeling. At least I'm at beacon so he can't really do anything too crazy, at least not yet considering we're still in the initiation for Beacon.

As we walked we eventually came to an empty area with several pedestals on it. As well as what appeared to be a few chess pieces. "You think these are the relics?" Knives asked as he looked at the pieces in front of us.

"Got to be right? So which one do we take?" I asked as I looked at the several pieces in front of us.

"Does it matter?" Knives as he looked at me.

"It's got to right? He said they'd regard that item and our standing. So whatever one we pick has got to have some sort of significance right?" I asked as I looked at him.

"It's probably a symbolic thing. You know how teachers can be with symbolism, themes, and all that," Knives said as he picked up a piece looking at it for a moment before placing it back down.

"In that case let's go with the pawn," I said as I looked at him. If this really does have a symbolic meaning behind it then the pawn was the safest bet. The weakest piece becoming the strongest, or maybe a piece that can become anything it chooses to be. It's got to be the right answer, nothing else would make sense in this scenario.

"Alright," Knives said as he picked up the pawn and held it up. "Let's head back before we run into any more grimm," Knives said as he looked at me. I nodded hearing this and we began to walk back to the cliff. When we did we handed the item we had gotten back to Ozpin.

"Good, now please make your way back to the auditorium, there you will find out who the other two members of your team are," Ozpin said as he looked at us. When he said this we nodded and began to make our way back to Beacon. When we arrived we saw that many others had already arrived as well. I was a bit surprised to see just how many people had made it there before us.

I sighed as I began to wait for the room to slowly fill up with the others that had passed the initiation and after a short speech, Ozpin began to list off the teams. After the first team, I realized why the piece that we got was so important. It was being used to decide what team we were placed on. So much for the symbolic meaning behind the piece, I guess since the use for it was something a bit more literal and a bit more unexpected.

I listened carefully watching for any figures that stood out. However, the only one that truly caught my attention what team JNPR, and that was only because it had Pyrrha Nikos on it. Roman wanted me to keep an eye on her so it's good to know what team she's on. The rest of her team didn't look like anything special, but you never can tell especially when it comes to huntsmen sometimes the unremarkable ones are the ones to surprise you.

"Onyx Knives, Ayuri Rough, Vektor Verdant, and [Name] [Last Name]," Ozpin said causing us to walk up. As we did I looked at the other members of the team I had been placed on. A male with green hair that had been tied into a bun, with blueish-silver eyes, and a female with spiky pink hair that had been tied into a ponytail with bright pink eyes. "Led by Onyx," Ozpin said as he looked at us.

"It's Knives actually, but whatever," I hear Knives say more to himself than anyone else. Glynda then came up to us and handed each of us a key. I can only assume that this was for our dorm room. We then moved to the side and I looked at the other two that I was going to be with. The male looked like a punk mixed with a mechanic, odd to say the least but I wasn't going to complain. And the female looked like your average, probably the only one of us I would consider 'generic'.

When we arrived at our room we began to unpack preparing our things as we did. There wasn't a lot of room in the dorm, it seemed like each of us got our corner and that was about it. After we finished unpacking I heard Knives let out a loud sigh as he began to sit down on the ground. "Alright, now that the boring stuff is out of the way," He began as he pulled out a bottle from his bag. "Who's up for a drink?" Knives asked as he began to pull out a few small glasses.

"Screw it, I'm down for a drink," Vektor said as he began to sit down next to Knives.

"I think I'm a little too young to be drinking," I said as I looked at the male in front of me refusing his invitation. Honestly, I'd love to take a few sips. But I'm trying to be an upstanding huntsman. "Hey, my family always says if you're old enough to kill you're old enough to drink," Knives said as he held up a small glass for me.

"I guess that's true," I said as I looked at the male before taking a seat next to him. I watched as he poured me a glass and handed it over to me.

"What about you?" Knives asked as he looked at Ayuri. "Are you in or out?" Knives asked as he looked at the female in front of him.

"I think I'll pass," Ayuri said as she looked at the male.

"Alright, suit yourself," Knives said as he looked at us.

"So what are you doing a Beacon?" I asked as I looked at the male in front of me.

"I'm looking for someone, a girl to be a bit more specific," Knives said as he looked at us.

"Aren't we all?" Vektor said with a chuckle as he looked at us. When he said that Knives chuckled a but.

"True enough, I don't think that I'll find her here, but at the moment it's the best lead I got," Knives said as he looked at me. When he said this I nodded and began to drink what Knives had given me.

"Does that have something to do with your sword?" I asked as I gestured to the large blade on his back.

"Yes, and no. Like I said it's a long story," Knives said as he looked at me causing me to nod a bit.

"What about you? Anything special?" Knives said as he looked at me causing me to shake my head.

"Not entirely, just want to do some good for the world," I said as I looked at the male in front of me.

"You and me both!" Vektor said with a smile as he raised his glass. I had to admit this wasn't exactly what I was expecting when I came here. I thought for sure huntsmen were just going to be a bunch of goody-two-shoes, while anyone that was bad would just be an outlier. But that doesn't seem to be the case. Then again as long as they don't do anything too bad I guess it's nothing to worry about.

But still, I need to remember not to get too close to any of them. I'm going to betray them eventually, so there's no point in getting attached to any of them. It'll just make showing them my true colors harder later.
