Chapter 38 - Playing Tricks On Me

Saturday morning. The Saturday morning.

9:15AM. No sign of Chloe or Sara yet.

Great! I can have breakfast in peace.

After changing out of my pj's and doing my usual morning routine, I made my way downstairs to fill my tummy.

"Good, you're up!" Chloe says chirpily from the dining table, making me stop in my tracks to check if I was really awake. I blinked a couple of times just to be sure.

"Gosh! You're already here?!" I gasped, walking over to the fridge. She was busy stuffing her face with pancakes.

"Don't eat too much, Rose. The last thing we want is a dress that can't fit" Dad speaks up from the living room, paper infront of his face. I don't have to see him to know he's smirking at me. I know his tone too well.

"Good morning to you too, old man" I answered back happily, pouring myself some apple juice.

"Try the pancakes, they're delish!" Chloe tells me, dropping a pancake onto my plate. I take a bite and almost melt, they were good.

After breakfast we were all lazing around in my room. Chloe and Val were discussing hair and makeup while browsing Pinterest on the floor and I was sprawled out across my bed with my earphones on. I wasn't interested in hairdos and whatnot. As long as I didn't look like something out of the Thriller clip, I was good.

Just before midday, Sara arrived.

"You guys! I'm so excited! Tonight's gonna be so fun" she squealed in excitement, bringing her dress to hang by mine and Chloe's. She puts her shoebox on my desk before joining Val and Chloe on the floor.

"When do we start getting ready, Val?" I groaned out loud, forgetting I had my earphones on. I pulled them off only to find the three of them staring at me like I was crazy.

"Around three should give you girls enough time. For now let's get started on your mani's and pedi's. Sara, did you bring your kit?" Valerie asks Sara, beaming with excitement. She was like a child on Christmas.

"Great! Rose, let's start with you" Val suggests, making both Chloe and Sara laugh and nod in agreement.

I scoffed at them and slowly rolled off the bed, not eager at all to have all this done. "Is it really necessary?" I asked.

"Uh, yes!" They all answered in unison, freaking me out.

The time didn't seem to be moving any slower. It was past five pm and Valerie was done with Sara and Chloe's hair. I must admit my sister was like a wizard, she definitely knew her stuff. Chloe was taking a hundred selfies and Sara couldn't stop looking at herself in the mirror. They were beyond pleased.

"Sister! Come on it's your turn" Valerie calls out to me, patting the now empty chair infront of the dresser. Let's just say I was kinda terrified. If Val burns my hair off or something, I'll never forgive her. She notices the uneasy look on my face and sighs loudly, shaking her head as she brushes my hair. "I'm not gonna make you bald, Rose. Relax" she promises.

I tried to sit still for as long as I could but this felt like it would go on forever. Valerie kept repeating the same line for like an hour. We're almost done. We're almost done. It was now six thirty.

"And we're done!" Valerie announces, clapping with excitement.

"It's about time. Did it really take you two hours to curl my hair?" I asked her, examining myself in the mirror. I looked like me, only.. prettier.

"Curled to perfection and let me be the first to say you look absolutely a-maz-ing!" Valerie says, beaming from ear to ear, obviously proud of her work.

"She's right, you look so good. You should consider wearing makeup every single day" Chloe comments, taking a few pictures of me.

"Stop!" I exclaim, pushing her phone out of my face. She laughs and moves to take her dress off the hanger. I guess it's that time already. Sara does the same, twirling and laughing as she holds her dress against her slim body. I took a deep breath and turned to Val who was already looking at me. She smiled and placed my dress in my hand before stepping out of the room. Probably to go update mother on how things were going. Or to brag about how well she does hair and makeup.

**

I was the last to get ready, dragging it on for as long as I could but every few minutes either Valerie or Chloe would knock annoyingly on my door. I examined myself in the mirror, my dark blue and black dress staring back at me. I didn't like strapless dresses and I've always hated my shoulders. Guess I'll make an exception tonight. For the first time I looked somewhat above basic because of my makeup but what I loved the most was my hair. Neatly curled to the sides, it looked like I stepped out of one of those old hollywood movies with the fur coats and red lipstick, pulling up on the red carpet with cameras flashing everywhere I looked, my diamond earrings and necklace weighing me down---

"Come on! Hurry up!" Chloe yells at me, interrupting my thoughts. She kept banging on my door repeatedly till I opened it.

Four of them, including my mother stood outside my door, gawking at me. Valerie looked like she was about to burst with happiness as she took in my appearance. Mom on the other hand was about to burst into tears.

"I hope those are happy tears you're about to cry" I said to her as I slowly stepped out of the room. She nodded quickly and looked at me from top to bottom.

"Is this really my Rose? You look like something out of a magazine, honey. You look so beautiful" mom gushes with red cheeks, trying not to cry.

"You can thank Valerie, she's amazing" I replied, glancing over at my big sister who smiled proudly at me. I was finally giving her credit for something. This was new.

"We better head downstairs, Zed just texted- limo should be here any minute now" Sara said, putting her phone back into her clutch purse. She took the lead downstairs with Val and mom while Chloe and I remained where we were.

Chloe stepped towards me and linked her arm in mine, leading us to the stairs.

"You hired a limo?" I asked curiously, chuckling at her.

"It was last minute and kinda Zed's idea. I just went along with it 'cause it sounded good" she answered.

As we approached the bottom of the stairs, I saw my dad standing by the door, a neutral look on his face.

"Father" I greeted him lazily, looking around for everyone else. They were busy taking last minute photos in the living room. Chloe ran to join them, not wanting to miss the opportunity of taking more photos.

"Daughter" dad replied, examining my look.

"Well, what do you think?" I asked him, looking down at my dress for the night.

"I think you look beautiful. Better than I expected" Dad says with a smile, guiding me into the living room to take mega embarrassing photos with him.

"Nothing insulting to say? Nothing sarcastic?" I asked dad, finding his attitude weird.

"Nope kiddo, not on your special night. Let's continue that tradition tomorrow" he laughs.

Angus and Zed showed up and led Chloe and Sara out of the house and into the ride. I was still taking photos with my parents when Chloe shouted that they'll wait out front for me.

Valerie was enjoying being behind the camera, saying 'one more' everytime I thought it was the last pic. I was growing annoyed and wanted to just leave already. Sensing my discomfort for the first time, Val finally announced the photoshoot was over.

"Thank goodness! Okay I'm out" I said to all of them before walking myself to and out the front door. I shut the door quickly and began walking towards the limo. Halfway there, it took off without me.

"No, no, no! Chloe! Chloe, what the hell? Wait!" I yelled frantically after the vehicle. "I can't believe this. They left without me?!" I exclaimed, stopping in my tracks. The clicking of my heels against the driveway coming to a halt.

Could this be payback for what happened with Zed? But I thought we were cool? God I'm so confused.

I groaned in frustration and decided to walk back inside and get dad to drive me. This can't seriously be happening right now.

"Can I take you instead?" Someone calls out as I begin walking back to the porch. I stop dead in my tracks and take a deep breath, closing my eyes. It can't be. That voice was too familiar, I could recognise it anywhere. I slowly turned around, eager to see if it was him or just my pathetic mind playing tricks on me.
