Chapter 21 - Taking Chances
The weekend passed by slower than usual and I was actually excited to be back in school today. After everything that went down on Saturday, I ended up not going over to Jesse. I decided to stay clear and let him come to me if he needed me. Not sure if he does though.
Just like Friday, Lyla was nowhere to be seen. Guess she didn't come to school today either. I dragged myself from class to class, minding my own business. Chloe decided to join the homecoming committee because we needed extra hands for decorations. So she's on top of that. Knowing Chloe, she'd decorate the gym to the best of her creative abilities. She never fails to disappoint, especially during social events like this.
Since this was kind of the last week of school for most of us, every corner was full of chatter. The classrooms, the cafeteria, even the hallways. Everyone was excited to end the school year.
I had one too many free periods today so before it was lunch, I found myself going into my space to unwind for a bit.
I pushed open the door and switched the light on. The place looked abit dirty so I waited till the janitor came by, then signalled him in. I moved my table and chair to one side and stacked my files neatly on the table. He happily swept and mopped and I thanked him before he carried on with his other duties.
I then shut the door, turned on the air-con and relaxed in my comfortable chair that was upgraded by Mr. Montgomery as requested by me. I shut my eyes and exhaled slowly, feeling relaxed here. There was no noise, no teenage chatter, no annoying laughter, just piece and qui--
"Hello?" Someone calls out, slightly pushing the door open.
"Urghh" I groan under my breath but brush it off and put on my best welcoming smile.
"Come on in!" I call out, pulling out my note book. This might be my last session for the year. I might as well take notes.
I was surprised to see Angus. This time he didn't have his laptop in his hand or his oversized bag that usually made it hard for him to walk around. I've always wanted to know what's in that bag of his.
"Hello Rosalie, I'm sorry for disturbing" He says sweetly, grabbing a seat opposite me. He looks kind of nervous as beads of sweat have formed on his head and he's averted his gaze to the table between us.
Something's up.
"So Angus, how are you?" I ask politely, trying to establish a more friendly approach. He looks really nervous.
"Um, I'm good, thanks. Yeah" He replies almost instantaneously, still looking down at the table rather than at me.
"Okay, that's good. So what brings you here? Do you need advice or help on something?" I ask him, not wanting to beat around the bush. Whatever it is, I wanna help.
"Well, as you know, homecoming is this week and err- I don't- I don't have a da-date yet" He stutters hopelessly, still avoiding eye contact. Okay this is not working. I need to get him to open up and be more comfortable.
I stand up from my comfortable chair and head across to Angus, pulling up the chair beside him. If I talk to him as a friend, maybe he won't be so nervous to open up. If he sees me as just a student counsellor, he won't tell me the full problem. It's happened with other students as well so the best approach was as a friend. Everything worked out great at the end of our sessions.
Angus looks up at me with wide eyes as I take a seat beside him. He fixes his black-rimmed glasses and clears his throat, shifting in his seat abit.
"Angus, I'm your friend. We have classes together, we're both in the homecoming committee. You're not a stranger to me, so why are you so nervous around me?" I ask him slowly, looking him right in the eyes. He's cute for a nerdy guy. Not my type though.
"Well Rosalie, like I said, I don't have a date and I've set my eyes on someone but I don't know how to approach her" Angus tells me with a smile.
Oh no. I hope he's not meaning me! I don't wanna hurt his feelings. Shit, I hope it's not me. Anyone, but me.
"Uh huh, so, um..can you tell me more about this girl y-you wanna ask to homecoming?" I nervously ask, already fearing his response.
"The girl. Well, I think she's absolutely brilliant. She's funny and outgoing. She's way out of my league, but I still wanna give it a shot. Try my luck. She's an excellent event planner aswell" He says then chuckles lightly as if picturing this girl he's telling me about.
Why do I have a feeling this girl is indeed my idiotic self?
I abruptly stand from the chair and head back to my own under the pretense of writing some notes but really I was just weirded out by all this. Angus never showed any signs of taking an interest in me in the past so why now?
But before I lie and say I'm actually not going to the event, I should confirm that the girl he's crushing on is indeed me. So here goes nothing.
"Okay, I think it's a great idea to take a chance. You never know what might happen. She might even be interested in you" I tell Angus and watch as his face brightens up and a smile appears.
"You think so?" He replies, looking at me with raised eyebrows.
"Of course, but I must ask, who is she?" My heart is freaking pounding in my chest, threatening to escape out my mouth.
Angus leans forward and scratches the back of his head. A nervous habit most guys do, I guess. Well, I've seen Jesse and Zed do it, so..
"This is gonna sound really weird but.." he begins.
Oh no, my suspicions were correct. It's me. Oh god, it's me!
Please universe, swallow me whole!
"I was thinking of asking.." he continues.
Oh god, make me disappear. Make me disap--
"Chloe" He says with a smirk, looking at me expectantly.
"What?!?" I gasp, totally shocked.
I look at Angus at begin to laugh. It's an uncontrollable laugh from inside. It's hearty and I feel a wave of relief take over me. Thank goodness it's not me. I laugh hysterically as Angus stares at me, looking abit scared.
I wouldn't blame him for being scared though, he has no idea why I'm laughing.
