Chapter 11 - Friends
When I reach the parking lot, I'm just in time for the main scene. I have no idea why Jesse is doing what he's doing. I swear he's the biggest idiot I've ever seen! I look around the carpark and see almost half the school have their phones out, recording.
That's the stupid part about the world we live in nowdays. People can't mind their own business, they like to bring their phones out when what's taking place has nothing to do with them. Where's the privacy?
I stand a few meters away from Jesse and watch as disaster unfolds.
"Lyla, please! Give me another chance" Jesse pleads. He's down on one knee with a pretty bouquet in his hand.
Oh well, he gets a hundred for effort, if you ask me.
"Jesse, get up! You're making a scene. People are watching!" Lyla half shouts, trying to get him to stand up.
She looks at the huge crowd with worried eyes. I don't think she wants this much attention drawn to her right now.
"I'll get up when you say you'll take me back, Lyla. Please! I love you" Jesse tells her, earning a few 'aww's' from the crowd.
I roll my eyes and look away, waiting for everything to end.
After a few seconds, Lyla gets fed up of Jesse and pulls him to his feet. She has an angry look on her face and it seems like she's about to hit him.
"We're over, Jesse! Get it in your head! I only want to be friends!" She snaps, her hands flying everywhere except for his face.
Jesse doesn't say a word as she gets in her car and starts the engine. The crowd moves out of the way. Most of them leave, satisfied with the new content on their phones.
After she drives off and the crowd disappears, Jesse begins to walk away, dumping the bouquet in the trash.
I try to call out to him but he doesn't look back, he just keeps walking. I guess he's pretty upset.
I go over to the trash and peek inside. The bouquet was beautiful. I picked out one of the flowers, it was fresh.
"Wow. Real flowers. Thought it would be some fancy artificial stuff but it's the real deal" I say to myself, smiling at the pretty forget-me-not's.
I shake my head and begin walking back inside, making my way to Principal Montgomery's office. I feel so bad for both Jesse and Lyla now.

I sat at the table, playing with my food. I wasn't hungry. I couldn't stop thinking about what happened at school today.
Maybe I should go over and check on Jesse. Maybe I should text Lyla, see if she's okay. She looked embarrassed earlier.
I sigh loudly and shove some mashed potatoes in my mouth. Mom looks at me and gives me a sweet smile. Dad on the other hand only concentrated on his plate.
"What's wrong Rosie, you not hungry?" Mom asks, glancing down at my plate.
I hadn't touched my steak or my vegetables. So far I've only had a bit of the potatoes.
"Yeah, I'm not. Can I have this later?" I reply, putting my fork down.
"Sure, dear. Go ahead and wrap it up. Eat when you feel like it" Mom tells me.
Dad mumbles something under his breath as I stand and walk into the kitchen. Soon as mom shoots him a glare, he stops.
I cover my plate with foil and leave it on the counter. I pad over to the back door and twist the knob slowly, trying not to make a sound.
I leave the door unlocked and hurriedly make my way next door. Soon as I reach the Matthers' doorstep, I suddenly feel nervous.
Am I doing the right thing?
Would he talk to me now that the thing with Lyla is over?
I take a deep breath and knock on the door. I wait a few seconds then exhale, just as I hear shuffling from the inside.
"Oh Rosalie, nice to see you" Mr. Matthers says as he opens the door, a pleasant smile across his face.
I give him a smile and stand awkwardly for a second before speaking. Maybe I should have turned around.
"Is. ..Is Jesse home?" I ask nervously.
"Yeah, yeah. Come in" He says, opening the door wider for me to step inside.
"Oh, no. I'm actually in a hurry" I tell him politely.
"Well then, let me fetch Jesse for you" Mr. Matthers says, before leaving to get Jesse.
My parents will start looking for me any minute now. Gosh, I hope I can get back inside without them noticing. I shift awkwardly on my heels, waiting impatiently.
"Rose. What are you doing here?" Jesse exclaims, stepping outside and shutting the front door.
He was in his gym shorts and a plain tee, probably just got home.
"I just wanted to check in. I-I wanted to see if you were okay" I tell him, looking into his eyes.
"I'm cool, Rose. You don't have to check on me" He replies, looking down at the ground.
I look around and see that it's a beautiful evening, even the stars are out.
"You wanna go for a walk?" I ask him, hoping he would say yes.
"Yeah, sure. But only if you have nowhere else to be" Jesse replies, giving me a small smile.

I hurried home and told my 'rents I had to finish an assignment with Chloe so I was gonna wait for Zed to pick me up outside.
They allowed me to go only because it was something to do with school.
Dad didn't say much, he only nodded and gestured towards the door. Mom told me to grab my jacket before leaving and I'm glad she did because it's actually chilly.
Thank goodness they didn't want to wait with me outside till Zed came, I'd be screwed if they found out I was lying.
