xv. Unwanted Conversations and Cupcakes
CHAPTER FIFTEEN ౨ৎ Lovesick
"Can we pretend that nothing's changed at all?"
"Can we just talk about how many people are trying to break down your Instagram post with you-know-who's hoodie?" Amara requested, her head resting on Juliette's lap who continued her scrolling through social media.
She huffed out a sigh, "No. It's not that big of a deal. Someone ran into me, she spilled her drink on my shirt, so she gave me her hoodie." Juliette explained, "That's it."
"Okay, right," her voice fading away prompted the brunette to playfully swat her forehead, "Hey!"
"We are friends. Is that not what friends do?"
Amara gasped, sitting up. "So, you finally agree that you guys are friends? Not that silly, stupid title you guys had before?"
"Mars, please." She turns her phone off and places it on her lap, lifting her head to stare up at her overly excited friend, about to take a sip of her drink. "Let's go ahead and drop it. How about that!"
The redhead sighs exasperatedly, standing up from her seat. "I'm telling you, she wants you back."
The sentence itself causes Juliette to almost choke, hastily swallowing the remnants of the liquid, her eyes wide with confusion, "What are you even talking about?"
"The hoodie, the conversations— did you forget what happened at the party?" She questions, "You might be oblivious, but we aren't. I'm only telling you because, well, I know how you were when you guys ended things and how you held onto hope that you guys would get back together. And I know that you were like that months ago, but! You know, just think about the what-ifs?"
"First off, she was rude that night. Second off, there are no 'what-ifs' to think about." Her voice went flat as she looks down at her lap. "She didn't come back, so I moved on. We've moved on. So you probably should too! Considering you weren't the one in my relationship."
Observing her and her sudden change of tone, she sighs. "Okay! Okay, I'm dropping it. It's dropping in like, five seconds. Four seconds... just give me a little bit—"
A laugh leaves her lips when she glances up at her, "Amara."
Nodding her head, Amara grins. "It's dropped! But you know, if you ever realized you actually did miss her, we wouldn't, you know, laugh at you or anything. Because I think it's clear that—"
"Amara!" she groaned, running a hand over her face. "Are you telling me how I feel? Because I think I know how I feel, and that feeling that I feel is that I don't miss her," Juliette grumbles, "Now! Let's move on."
"Feel word count; four," the girl comments, earning another laugh from her friend. "Let's talk about how you're going to give Paige her hoodie back then."
She shrugs her shoulders, "I'll probably just drop it off at Ice's place. She visits her a lot, so it'll go back to her in no time!"
"Didn't she say to drop it off at her place?" Amara questioned, patting her leg. "I think you should probably do that instead of going to her friend's house to drop it off."
"I— didn't you want to make cupcakes? Maybe go do that." She suggested with a shake of her head. Amara laughs while acknowledging the answer and exits. "I'll be there in a bit!"
KK's birthday was swiftly approaching, merely two days away. Feeling bummed for not being present when Juliette and Lorelei encountered her during their grocery shopping excursion, Amara decided to craft cupcakes for her. They'd bake them, decorate them, and find out when she'd be close by to give them to her.
Snatching the hair-tie from her wrist, Juliette gathers her hair up and into a ponytail before rising from the couch and making her way into the kitchen.
"Alright! Grab the aprons, please."
"Sir, yes, sir." The girl replied, grabbing two aprons from off the hook and slipping it over her friend's head, tying it in the back before she could even ask. "How's it feel? Snug? Loose? Tight?"
Amara grinned, "Perfectly fine, thank you!"
"Beautiful! Okay, grab the oil."
As the two made the batter and carefully — and precisely poured the mixture into the cupcake pan, Amara slipped on an oven mitt and placed it inside the oven. Leaning back with a huff, "Why is baking lowkey hard."
The brunette shot her friend a puzzled look before averting her gaze with a smile, "All we did was make the batter. It took not even five minutes?"
"I'm about to open our window and push you out of it," she threatened, "Frosting please!"
"Of course, beautiful!"
"How long should they be in the oven for?"
With that question alone, Juliette's eyes widen and she whips around. "You didn't set a timer?"
"No? I thought you did!" She shot back.
Letting out a groan in response, she surveyed the kitchen for the box containing the instructions, her eyebrows furrowing even deeper when she couldn't find it.
"Mars... where's the box?"
The redhead hums, "I threw it out."
"Well, get it back?" Juliette tells her, standing up straighter. "Do you want these cupcakes to burn?"
"What's the harm in winging it!"
Her lips part slightly as she stares at her friend in complete and utter disbelief, "We could burn them? Potentially kill the recipient of these beautiful cupcakes? Get sick? Eat burnt cupcakes? I could go on." She deadpans, crossing her arms over her chest.
Amara nods, "I'll go ahead and grab the box."
"Great thinking."
