Don't Fear The Reaper

Chicago had been your home for as long as you could remember. These alleyways and streets are laid out like a map through your brain, showing you this windy city's brightest and darkest parts. And yet despite your natural-born knowledge of every turn, the weirdo on your tail was digging in closer and closer. This wasn't natural. This was your city. why couldn't you lose someone like him? Your shoes nearly slipped through a puddle of rainwater as your fingers gripped onto a lampost to avoid careening into the street. Using the momentum, however, you turned onto the next stretch of path, glancing over your shoulder to see this Kidd guy jump over the puddle and continue his pursuit.

(Y/n): Ok ok... don't panic... I just have to-

Kidd: Will you give up already?! You can't escape!

You didn't bark back like you wanted to instead, noticing someone walking out of a bakery with a loaf of bread. This could be your chance. Most stores have a back door. So on a dime, you managed to do a tight turn and sprint just into the shop as the door closed, nearly bumping into the customer. The old man behind the counter growled in disapproval making his way around the counter to complain about your tracking dirt and rainwater into the store as you pushed through the door to the back. Vaguely hearing the door opening bell behind you only further spurned you on as you dodged through mushrooms of flour and flying dough to crash out the back door, looking like it had freshly snowed in the windy city.

Kidd: A-Ah hey wait stop that-

You could hear the shouts of the guy following you as you glanced through the closing back door to see he was halted by the man behind the counter, though as pastry chefs descended on you in an angry mob of flour and pastry, you decided to not stick around.

You hadn't realized how much you had been running until you finally came to a stop in front of an old memory. A distasteful but convenient memory. Angry muscles twitched and reminded you of the excessive running, your lungs sucking down air as you could feel sweat clinging to your body. As you managed to stand up, you found yourself in front of a building, or what was left of one. The decayed and burnt remains of a building sat on the edge of a small trash-riddled parking lot. This building is... well was the first place you called home. A home that was long since removed from this city. A memory ripped asunder by a city that was consumed by its vanity and sins. Though there was one good thing that could be dragged away from the skeleton of this old building. And that was-

???: You didn't run as far as I thought.

Your blood itself seemed to chill as you reluctantly turned around to see Kidd, panting softly from seemingly managing to follow you despite the distraction.

Kidd: I suppose this is where you would like to surrender? It's rather... scenic.

(Y/n): I'm not going anywhere with you. Me nor my partner.

Kidd: I'm afraid that isn't an option.

(Y/n): We didn't do anything wrong! We simply got rid of criminals who harassed us!

Kidd: Then you must get harassed quite a bit to have removed so many names from the lists-

(Y/n): What lists?!

Kidd couldn't help but sigh, both of you were tired and agitated and you were worried as to what Luna had gotten up to seeing as she had been chased by the other two girls this weirdo had brought with him. A breeze hit your back and felt nice against your tired muscles but what caught your attention was the piece of paper that slapped against your calf from the wind. Reaching down to pick it up, it appeared to be a discarded page of the newspaper for today, especially as the top of it had the words "Bonny and Clyde Strike Again!" On it. Well... at least this is a plan to try.

(Y/n): I have to get back to Luna...

You huffed out, turning on a dime as you took a step forward only for your eyes to widen as you awkwardly pounced forward. Clutching at your ankle, something appeared to be wrong.

(Y/n): W-What... no... not now!

You said trying to force your ankle to comply despite the agonized way your foot tried to carry your forward. The hand holding the paper pinched tightly, nearly ripping off the corner of the page it held as your free hand tried to crawl forward. Behind you, the weirdo let out a sigh before you could hear his shoes approaching on the old asphalt.

Kidd: All that running away probably hurt your ankle. Just stop moving and when we get back we can get it looked at by-

(Y/n): This... is this your first time to Chicago?

Kidd: Huh? Well yes.

(Y/n): Then would you like to see why it's called the windy city?

You wanted to sound cool and thankfully you managed to scrape some luck together as you lifted the newspaper just in time to let a strong breeze catch it and send it flying behind you. And once more you must have hit a critical streak of luck as the paper danced in the wind just long enough to slap against Kidd's face.

Kidd: Gah hey what the heck?!

The boy with the uneven hair peeled the page off of his aggravated face just in time to spy you springing into action, left arm coiled into an almost deadly looking uppercut, a serious look seeping from your (E/c) gaze. Using your kneeling stance, you put every ounce of strength you could muster into the punch feeling it collide into the male's stomach as you went so far as to lift him with just your fist.

Kidd: Hah! So you pretended to hurt your ankle for a surprise attack? Clever, but not enough.

Your gaze found that the attack had been just barely blocked, Kidd's hand resting between your fist and his stomach. Feeling your teeth grit, you let out a yell as you followed through with the assault by throwing the boy back a few steps. Your shoes clapped onto the asphalt as you launched another punch toward the boy only for him to brush it aside in favor to deliver a kick to your stomach. Reeling back, he continued the assault with a jab and another kick before going for your arm in what you could only assume was a takedown. So instead you devised another plan. Kidd's fingers managed to secure around your wrist only for your arm to pull back, yanking him forward into a knee to the midsection. A coughing gasp escaped from his lips as he recoiled back while you took the chance to recover from the vicious kick you had received moments before. Then at once both of you took this chance to rush forward. Kidd raised his leg to deliver a murderous-looking high kick while your fingers tightened, ready to break your knuckles on this weirdo's teeth. As both of your assaults launched-

???: Stop!

You could feel the tip of Kidd's shoe resting on your ear as your hands were so close to his face that you could feel his breath on your knuckles. Both of you turned in time to see Luna, hands on her knees panting like she had run a marathon. However, much to your dismay she was tailed by the two girls from before. The tall uninterested-looking one and the short excited one.

Shorty: Oooh are you guys in a fight? Boom! Pow!

Tall One: You guys can't stop fighting.

You couldn't help but let out a breath, remembering that you used a lot of stamina up to this point but you could still get the two of you out of here should the need arise.

(Y/n): Luna hold on I'll-

Luna: You don't... hah... have to do anything... hoo... That was a lot of running.

Kidd's leg retracted to rest on the ground as you took the time to lower your arms and jog over to the exhausted girl. Your hands lifted to rest on her shoulders as she caught her breath and straightened to look you in the eyes with a much more serious gaze than you were used to from the girl.

(Y/n): Did they do anything to you? I tried to lose the weirdo but-

Luna: We don't have to run.

(Y/n): What...

Luna: We... we don't have to run from them. From what they explained to me this... might be a good opportunity for us.

You couldn't help but blink in surprise. The girl that hated being under someone else's control was now willingly throwing herself into the arms of these weirdos?

(Y/n): I-I don't... what happened? Did they blackmail you or-

Luna: They didn't blackmail me. They didn't hurt me or fight me, heck they didn't even catch me. We just came to a mutual agreement. Nothing bad is going to happen to us as long as we aren't bad people. We're not bad, are we?

(Y/n): Of course not!

Luna: And neither are they. Just trust me ok?

Your gaze lifted to peer at the two girls standing behind Luna and then over your shoulder at the weirdo. This didn't seem real... but it was Luna's idea...

(Y/n): I'll trust you on this. I would have won the fight anyway so he just got an easy break.

Kidd: Huh?! I totally had you on the ropes!

(Y/n): Did not! I was ready to flatten you onto the pavement with your weird hair!

That comment seemed to send a shock of electricity through the boy as she crumpled to the ground yelling about being asymmetrical garbage. The two girls took this time to approach Kidd in a vain attempt to try and convince him that he was not garbage. Watching this rather sad display, Luna took a step forward and let a finger softly drag across your knuckles to draw your attention. Looking at her out of the corner of your eye, you couldn't help but crack a small smile as Luna winked at you with a devious grin.

Yep, this was Luna's plan alright.

(Y/n): This... this is a school?

This was all you could say seeing the "school" as it was called by the trio. This massive spiky and skull-shaped building seemed nothing like the boring old buildings you were used to. And judging by the look on Luna's face she was in a similar place of confusion.

Kidd: You don't have the time to admire the admittedly exquisite symmetrical architecture~ It's time to meet with my father.

(Y/n): So you're father is like the principal of this place?

Shorty: Mhmm!

Luna: And this is a school for meisters and weapons to train to become partners to reap... souls?

Tall One: That's the gist of it.

(Y/n): Why?

Kidd: All will be explained inside.

Shaking your head from side to side you could only hope that was the case or you would only be more lost. The tall one rested a hand on your shoulder before walking forward with the other two to guide you toward the principal's office. As it was revealed, the tall one was named Liz while the short one was Patty. The two were sisters but they didn't get much farther than that before an argument about boob size sidelined the who conversation. The inside of the school was a fair bit tamer compared to the outside but this outlandish decoration was a far crime from the cookie-cutter buildings you were used to. Luna was much more amazed by this place though you could guess why. Her plan was looking like it might pay off much earlier than expected but the majority of the following steps were locked in that mind of hers.

Luna: So it's like an actual school?

Liz: Yep. It's not so different than what you guys had in America.

Luna: We never got the chance to go to school.

Liz: A-Ah... Well uh... um...

Patty: Awkward...

Liz: M-Maybe you guys could attend here after speaking with Death-sama!

(Y/n): We aren't the types to stick around in one place if we don't have to.

Liz: H-Hah...

Patty: Zero for two!

Kidd: We don't know what my father will say. Nothing can be said or done before then.

As the five of your sauntered down a hallway, you couldn't help but take notice of something. It was a sensation crawling up the back of your neck. Like your hair was standing on end. Shuddering, you turned in time to see someone walking down the opposite was despite never passing your group. Did they exit from a room? The shapely figure wore a long white doctor's looking coat and had blonde hair. What shocked you, even more, was that this woman glanced over her shoulder in time to pierce you with her sharp yellow eyes. Though the sharp glare quickly shifted into a warm mellow gaze before she offered you what you assumed to be a wink before moving on down the hall. You were a mess at this point. Chills and warmth spread through you as your mind couldn't figure out a response to the strange woman. Was she the nurse? Why did your body react with such hostility at first? Did she wink at you? Is this what they call an attraction to older women-

Luna: Hey what's the hold-up?

Luna gripped the back of your shirt before tugging you along. Your legs stumbled but managed to keep you upright as Luna dragged you forward. Did she see your strange reaction? Either way her curious mood seemed to switch into her business mode as the corridor transitioned into a Japanese styler with sandals and gate-like objects stretching out toward a mirror. Kidd took the moment to step forward, pressing his finger against the mirror as Luna and you waited for the principal to appear. And he did just that, the mirror seemingly going two-way as before you stretched out a pitch-black figure with a skull-shaped mask. This wasn't natural and by the chills down both of your spines, you were sure of what you had just gotten yourselves into.

Bonnie and Clyde just came face-to-face with the Grim Reaper...
