Knight in Shining Heels
"Yes... absolutely... of course! Yes, and we have an entire catalogue with the flower meanings so you can choose your desired combinations... Perfect, that sounds wonderful. I will wait for your email. Alright. Goodbye." Chorong put down the phone with a grin. "Yah, Han Seojun. Look at this." He pushed the laptop towards Seojun who is sleeping on the counter.
Seojun peeled one eye open, eyed the screen with disinterest and went back to sleep.
"Yah! Seojun!" Chorong shook Seojun by the shoulders. "Look at the orders! We're booked for the entire month!" Seojun didn't budge.
The phone rang again. Chorong whistled at the caller ID. "Check it out. Its that lady that plans weddings for Councilmen. That Award Ceremony was the best thing to happen to us."
Seojun didn't respond. Instead, he switched the direction of his face to the other side.
"Han. Seo. Jun!" Chorong shook him again. Seojun didn't respond.
Murphy's Law stated that anything that can go wrong, will go wrong. To this, Han Seojun added, that when one thing went wrong, everything would start to go wrong.
Or maybe that's just what it feels like.
Nothing seemed good to Seojun. Food felt dry and tasteless. The air felt acrid. Flowers seemed to be withering. The weather was gloomy. Even the birds weren't singing.
"Yah, what is wrong with you? Are you ill?" Chorong asked in concern. He had been managing the shop that day since Seojun seemed uninterested in tending to any customers.
Everything felt wrong. Nothing made sense and even the flowers couldn't help him express this strange feeling.
"Chorong, you watch the shop. I'm going to bed." Seojun said, yawning like he hadn't slept in weeks.
Chorong looked at Seojun in concern. "Mwoya. Something's wrong with him."
It didn't occur to Chorong that Seojun's troubles might have something to do with the absence of Kang Sujin. It didn't even occur to Chorong to question why Sujin was absent at all. It was only when Taehoon showed up in the middle of the day with a suitcase and a huge bundle of papers in tow that Chorong realized that Sujin would not be coming over to the shop any more.
"Why is it you and not Sujin who's here?" Chorong frowned at Taehoon.
"You call Kang Leader-nim by her first name?" Taehoon's eyes bulged.
"What's it to you?"
"Nothing! Absolutely nothing!" Taehoon squeaked. The giant and angry looking Kim Chorong frightened him. Little did he know that Kim Chorong was simply a giant teddy bear.
"Han Seojun-si only has two weeks left in his contract so we have to get the concluding paperwork done. Its going to take a while so... is Seojun-si around?" Taehoon peered into the doorway that led to the back but Chorong blocked his view.
"Seojun isn't feeling well. And you haven't answered my question. Where's Sujin?" Chorong said, crossing his arms. He towered over Taehoon with his impressive height and build.
Once Taehoon was done telling Chorong what Suah had told him, Chorong sighed in wonder. "Woah! Kang Sujin is a scary woman."
"You haven't seen anything if you haven't worked under her. That's when she's truly scary. But she hasn't been to work since the Award Ceremony. None of us really know where she is or what's going to happen now. Lee Leader-nim has been so busy covering up for Kang Leader-nim's work that he hasn't even left his office."
Chorong whistled. "That can't be good."
On the stairs that led to his quarters, leaning against the banister, Seojun listened in to this conversation. Of course, he had been the one to tell Sujin not to come back to his shop. He hadn't actually thought she would listen. He had half expected her to come bursting in through the door saying that Seojun wouldn't be able to get rid of her that easy.
He had half wished that is what Sujin would have done.
But as instructed, Sujin didn't show. Might as well end things now, Seojun thought. The contract was almost up anyways.
Quiet as a mouse, Seojun went back up to his room. He had felt so sleepy at the counter but now he was experiencing a strange sort of alertness. He was tired and drowsy but the minute his head hit the pillow, he would feel wide awake.
Its that law, Murphy's Law, Seojun realized, I'm still waiting for more things to go wrong.
But what more was there? Kang Sujin was gone. Lim Jukyung was still with Lee Suho and Han Seojun was the one left with nothing. There was nothing else left to ruin, Seojun decided.
Seojun had been incorrect however. There was still one more thing.
It happened when Chorong logged onto Seojun's Insta page and discovered it had been deleted because a lot of people reported it as going against Instagram's community policies.
"What the hell?" Chorong said to himself as he read through the message that showed up when he logged in. He tried logging out and logging in again but got the same response. He checked Seojun's social on other websites. They appeared unharmed but were flooded with dozens of hate messages and inquiries about some news that had been trending on social media.
Chorong clicked on the link that people kept sending at the shop's inbox.
"Oh no..."
Immediately, he called the only person he could think of for help. Unfortunately, Sujin wasn't taking any calls from anyone. So, Chorong tried the next person he could think of for help. Lee Suho.
"Did you see the—" Chorong began.
"I was just about to call you—"
"What is that?"
"I don't know. Is Seojun there?"
"No. He's been acting weird lately. I think it might have something to do with Kang Sujin."
"Did he find out?"
"I don't know."
"Well, we can worry about that later. Right now we need to sort this out. Who does the original post belong to?"
"I don't know. I got the link from multiple sites. And its trending..."
"Aish, damnit! Okay. I'm sending Taehoon. Don't panic okay. And tell Seojun. Its better he hear it from you then find out online."
"But is it true? Did Han Seojun really..." Chorong trailed off, unable to finish the statement.
Suho hesitated, "I don't know."
When Han Seojun finally found the strength to come down from his home, he was surprised to find the shop closed up and Taehoon and Suah sitting at the counter with their laptops in front of them and their ears glued to their phones. Chorong was there with Suho talking animatedly. Jukyung was in the corner, looking worried and pale when she spotted Seojun in the doorway.
Everyone stopped what they were doing and stared at Seojun.
"What's going on?" Seojun asked cautiously.
"Seojun..." Jukyung straightened.
"Han Seojun, you better sit down." Chorong came to his side.
"Why? What's wrong?"
Suah and Taehoon looked at each other unsurely. Suho stepped forward.
"There's something about you that's been going around the internet. Something I think you should see."
He pulled out his phone and put on a video. At first Seojun couldn't recognize it, but the sound brought back a strange memory. One that he had suppressed so hard he had almost forgotten it.
"Oh my God!" Someone in the video was saying. The sound had a strange, stale quality to it like most recorded voices had.
"What is he doing?"
"Is he going to jump?"
"Don't jump, Jung Seyeon!"
"Wait I think there's someone..."
A dozen screams suddenly sounded as Seyeon's body came crashing down.
"Look! Someone pushed him!"
"He pushed him!"
"Is that Han Seojun?"
"Han Seojun pushed Jung Seyeon!"
"Get someone! Get the doctor!"
"Help him!"
"No don't touch the body!"
"Stop taking pictures and get the teacher!"
Seojun's eyes were red, blaring and unblinking. His face a mixture of pain and sorrow. The video continued but he couldn't hear. His ears were ringing. His eyes stung. The room started spinning and he felt like throwing up.
But he felt a hand on his arm. Through the strange haze, he found Lim Jukyung with her big brown eyes looking at him in concern.
"Are you okay?"
Seojun gulped. He opened his mouth to speak but words wouldn't come out. Instead, what came out was vomit. Suho pulled Jukyung away as Seojun threw up on the floor.
"Seojun-ah!" Chorong moved to help Seojun but pushed him away. He looked up at everyone staring at him with that look on their faces. That look of concern and terror. To Seojun, that look said they wanted nothing to do with him. That said they thought he was bad just like the people in high school had thought.
In his state, Seojun couldn't see Chorong's concern, Jukyung's devastation, Suho's worry, Suah's empathy or Taehoon's dismay. All he saw were teenagers in school uniform labeling him as someone who would kill their own best friend.
"Seojun—" Chorong tried to help again.
Seojun pushed him away. "Get away from me. Get. Away. From me!" Wiping his face, Seojun went back upstairs and locked himself away in his room.
He knew what Suho having that video meant. It meant that someone had revealed his past online. And Seojun was right. Someone had leaked the video of Jung Seyeon committing suicide. Except, with the way it was shot, it looked like Seojun had pushed him. The camera had even captured Seojun leaning over from the roof with shock and horror on his face.
"Its obvious that he was only trying to pull that kid back." Suah defended later on, after they had cleaned up the vomit and reconvened in Seojun's office.
"Yeah, but there's that article. Someone from Seojun's high school is claiming that he used to bully that kid and threw him off the roof." Taehoon argued.
"Some other students of the same school have even supported the article." Jukyung lamented.
"Who cares? We don't know Seojun's side of the story. That article could be fake." Suho defended.
Chorong came in from the door as he hung up on another call. "Well, that's the last of our events that cancelled on us." He exhaled deeply. "This is going to ruin the shop."
"It already has. I've had to take down all of your socials because of the negative comments we keep getting." Suah frowned.
"Argh! This can't happen! I had so much riding on this shop's success." Suho groaned in frustration.
"I've asked our people to help take down the video. The original post is down but its still spreading like wildfire." Jukyung said.
Taehoon and Suah looked at each other again. Then they both looked at Lim Jukyung. Something passed between the three of them and Suho picked up on it.
"I've already tried calling her. She isn't picking up my calls." He said.
"Who?" Chorong asked but Taehoon spoke over him.
"You know if she was here then this would get dealt with much faster."
"Well, she isn't here, is she?"
"Let me try." Suah said, making a call. "Voicemail." She said after a moment.
"Who?" Chorong said again but Jukyung spoke over him.
"Let me try." She said, taking out her phone. After a while she too repeated, "Voicemail."
"WHO?" Chorong's voice boomed. They turned to him.
"Kang Sujin." They all said.
"Oh. Let me try then." Chorong took out a phone and clicked on Sujin's contact.
"But wait... your phone's here." Suah pointed to the cellphone on the desk.
Chorong said in a hushed voice, "I know. This is Seojun's phone."
The line clicked on the fourth ring. Through the phone, Sujin's muffled voice could be heard. "Han Seojun?"
"No. This is Chorong. Seojun left his phone in the shop."
"Oh. Why are you calling me then?"
"You don't know what's happened?"
"What do you mean?"
Chorong explained the situation.
"I'll be there in ten minutes."
Sujin arrived in nine. She burst in like a hurricane in a sharp black suit and her hair set loose in a straight curtain. Her heels clacked on the floor. She stopped when she saw everyone in the office room.
"Well, well, well. The entire family's here." She commented, putting her hands on her hips.
"Sujin-ah," Suho began but Sujin ignored him.
"Where is he?" She addressed Chorong.
"Kang Leader-nim—" Taehoon tried to speak but Sujin ignored him too.
"In his room."
Sujin nodded to Chorong and stalked upstairs, her heels sounding loudly, announcing her arrival. Everyone heard her bang against the door and shout, "Yah, Han Seojun! Get out! Yah! Are you going to hide away like a coward? You gonna let everyone believe you're a murderer?!" Bang! Bang! Bang! "Open up!"
"She's going to break down the door." Taehoon said quietly.
"Let her. We've still got damage control to do." Suho said as he got yet another call from his board members. Jukyung frowned as she saw Suho leave the room.
"I wish this would all go away." She said.
"Don't worry. Kang Leader-nim is here now." Suah reassured her.
Upstairs Sujin banged on the door again. As she raised a fist to pound on the door again, she remembered, "Oh wait. I had a key made."
She took out the key she had secretly made when Seojun had locked himself away the second time when Changmin had visited. As soon as she entered the key the door flew open.
Of course, he's half naked and wrapped in his bedsheet. Why am I always surprised?
Seojun looked worse for wear. His eyes were still red and now with lack of sleep, they were puffy. His face was haggard and his hair looked like he had been pulling at it from multiple sides.
"I thought I told you to not come back."
"I thought I told you to stop hiding in your room."
"I thought that since you and I are no longer friends, your rules don't apply anymore."
"And I thou—no, shut up! I'm not playing this game with you."
"Good. Now leave." Seojun tried to slam the door shut but Sujin stopped it with her hand.
"You can't just hide away from your problems, Han Seojun. Your business is in trouble."
"Let it be. I don't care."
"I care. I worked hard to make this shop a success. I'm not going to watch it all crumble away just because someone online got jealous and decided to make your private life public property." Sujin said determinedly.
Seojun looked at her, half convinced he was dreaming. She was dressed sharply, but there was no trace of makeup on her face, no spicy cologne. Just a hint of sweat and shiny heels. To an outsider, Sujin looked like she had taken hours to dress. But Seojun could tell that she had just thrown on whatever she could find in hurry.
"I can't fix this without knowing what actually happened. You have to tell me or else I can't help you."
Seojun's jaw clenched, "I don't need your help." He turned away but Sujin stomped her foot down on the sheet he had wrapped around him. It fell off his shoulders and on the ground. Seojun gasped as he scrambled to cover himself up. He froze when he tried to pull the sheet up but found he couldn't because Sujin's heel was on it.
"I see it's a Zebra print this time." She eyed his underwear.
This damn woman! Seojun thought, embarrassed.
"So you gonna talk or do I have to force it out of you?" Sujin crossed her arms, tilting her head.
"Alright! Alright! I'll talk!" Seojun desperately pulled at the sheet. Sujin raised her foot and Seojun stumbled back with the force of his own pull.
"Good. I'll get the coffee ready."
