A Flower With Rotten Roots

Just a floor above the Move Consulting building was a massive ball room, specially made to host events by the companies at Move Conglomerate. It stretched wide, dark green marble flooring, high white walls supported by Doric columns and three giant chandeliers hanging from the ceiling. Seojun's jaw dropped at the grandeur of it all. He had to arrive five hours early to set up the flower decorations.

"Woah. The people at Move have got some serious dough." Chorong commented as he helped Seojun carry all the table arrangements.

People were bustling about getting everything ready for the event. The tables were ready with white sheets and empty plates. All Seojun and Chorong had to do was set up the flowers. It took the boys four hours to set everything in a way that Seojun was satisfied.

Seojun wiped the sweat from his brow as he marveled at his own work. Each table in the room had a beautiful centerpiece; an artful arrangement of pale pink flowers surrounding a dark, deep colored flower. The event planner came up to the boys with his mouth shrunken. He had one of the table arrangements in his hand.

"I see you've used the flower that I wanted." He said sourly.

Chorong piped up, "We couldn't find enough to make the entire bouquet out of it so we used a single flower for all of the arrangements."

"And you've still used the Rose of Sharon." The event planner turned over the vase in his hand.

"We had to." Seojun gently tugged at the vase the event planner was holding. Tucked between the stems was a card with the flower meanings. He held it out for the planner to see.

The Rose of Sharon, national flower of South Korea. Symbolizing an eternal blossom that never faded. It also stands for love, beauty and healing in other cultures.

"Move Consulting helps companies heal. And they make sure the businesses they serve never fade. That is why the flower is important to them."

The event planner snatched the vase away from Seojun's hands and cleared his throat. "This clearly isn't what I wanted." He cleared his throat again. "But... the arrangement isn't half bad." The barest hint of a smile played on the man's lips. Seojun knew this was the only extent of approval he would get.

"Good job." The man departed before Seojun or Chorong had a chance to acknowledge the praise.

"Ya hear that? He said we did a good job!" Chorong shook Seojun who was acting cool on the surface.

"Look at you two, acting like you've won the lottery," said a voice from behind them.

Seojun rolled his eyes as he turned to meet Kang Sujin. He stopped short when he saw her, fully dressed for the event. She wore a black dress that was cinched at the waist and had a flared-out skirt reaching to her knees. The panels of the skirt overlapped, reminding Seojun of flower petals, much like a black rose. The belt around the waist had small, blunt, silver spikes. The shoulders of the dress were pointed and structured and had spike studs as well. Her wrists too had thin leather straps with spikes on them. From her ears, dangled long, pointy earrings. Her eyes were lined in dark kohl and finally, her full lips were painted a dark red and pulled back in a smirk.

"Woah. You look so cool." Chorong said dreamily.

"I know." Sujin said, not taking her eyes off Seojun. He knew she wanted his reaction. But for some strange reason, Seojun didn't want to give her that satisfaction. He kept his face stony and unreadable.

"The place looks amazing, Han Seojun. You've done a wonderful job." Lee Suho joined them as he pointed to the flowers hanging from the ceilings and covering the walls. "Shouldn't you guys be getting ready now? You don't want to be late."

Chorong and Seojun looked at each other.

"Well, you didn't think we'd have to work for the event without inviting you, did you?"

"Didn't you see the invitation in the folder I gave you?" Sujin added.

"You're the guest of honor tonight, Han Seojun. The board has loved the progress your shop has made. And in six months no less." Suho looked pointedly at Sujin who looked up at the ceiling in mock innocence. "We'll be announcing the reinstatement of our community service program. And the spotlight will be on you so you'd better dress up.

Chorong and Seojun looked at each other again.

"Even Sujin's dressed up this way in your honor," Suho said teasingly.

"Yah!" Sujin punched him in the shoulder, blushing, as Suho laughed.

Chorong and Seojun looked at each other a third time.

"You got a suit?" Chorong asked.

"I guess so. You?"

"I'll have to go all the way home."

"You can borrow something from the artist closets up on the eighth floor. One of Move's subsidiaries is an entertainment company. They keep clothes for their artists and actors." Suho suggested.

"Let me make some calls." Sujin took out a phone from her clutch and stepped aside. As she did, Seojun's eyes fell on Jukyung emerging from the ball room entrance.

She wore a dark pink, almost red, silk dress. Her hair hung in chestnut waves. Her makeup was simple yet elegant. She looked like a rose, beautiful and bright. She smiled when she saw the boys standing together.

"Suho-ya!"

"Hey, you." Suho greeted Jukyung warmly, but Seojun noted the two kept their distance from each other. He figured the two were still hiding their relationship, although by just one look it was obvious they were very much in love.

"Seojun-ah. Its so good to see you. But why aren't you dressed?" Jukyung asked.

"Sujin forgot to invite him."

From the corner, Sujin hissed, "I did not forget! Yes, I'm still here." She said into her phone. After a minute she rejoined the group as Jukyung and Chorong were exchanging stories.

"Alright, the costume department up at Move Entertainment says they'll arrange something for you." Sujin said. "Chorong. Seojun. Follow me."

"See you guys in a bit." Chorong waved goodbye to the secret couple.

Sujin took the boys up to the eighth floor where they were welcomed by a nervous looking girl.

"Oh, Kang Sahjang-nim! You didn't need to come up here yourself."

"Its not Sahjang, its Leader. Our office has a different policy on hierarchy." Sujin said mindlessly, typing into her phone. "Its these two." She pointed to the boys behind her. "Get them dressed will you? And I don't suppose you have a makeup artist around."

"Of course. Anything for you, Kang Sah-Leader-nim!"

Sujin went back while the nervous girl took Chorong and Seojun through the wide office floor and to the costuming department in the back. They met a seamstress there who eyed the boys from head to toe and took out two smartly cut suits from a rack.

"Here, this should fit you." She handed Chorong his suit. "And you." She gave Seojun another once over. "You model, yes?"

Seojun shook his head fervently.

"Pity. You would have been perfect for this new eye wear campaign they're planning."

It was an hour long process, especially since Sujin had ordered the nervous woman to also get Chorong and Seojun a full glow up by the makeup department. Once the boys were ready, they were led back to the elevator they came up in.

"I have something for your COO. She forgot to pick it up when she came to collect her dress. Could you please make sure she gets it?" The nervous woman held up a thick, black plastic garment bag. Seojun just looked at the girl.

I don't know who the COO is. I only know Lee Suho.

Chorong took the garment bag, "Ah, sure. I'll get this to Sujin. Thank you very much once again."

Once the elevator doors closed, Seojun asked. "Sujin?"

"What?"

"That bag's for the COO." Seojun said. He hadn't met the COO that worked with Lee Suho, but from what he had heard from Jukyung in passing, that person was tough as nails.

"Yeah. COO. Kang Sujin." Chorong said as if the answer was obvious.

"But that's..." Seojun trailed off.

What was it that Jukyung had told him about Move Consulting? That Suho had started this company with his childhood friend, that the two worked as CEO and COO. Seojun thought back to how close Suho and Sujin were, how casually she addressed Suho, how their offices were the same size.

"WHAT?! She's the COO? She's the owner?!" Seojun looked at Chorong, bug eyed.

"Co-owner. Remember, she runs things with Suho."

"But she runs the place?!"

"Yeah..." Chorong said in concern. "Didn't you know?"

Seojun thought back. Had Sujin ever mentioned her position? No. She hadn't. She'd only left a card when they had first met and that too Seojun had thrown away without a glance.

"Ah-nee, why is that surprising? Do you think a simple consultant would have been able to turn your business around so quickly?"

It felt so obvious now that it had been said out loud, but all this time, Seojun had thought of Sujin as just some Team Leader or Director. Not the actual co-owner. No wonder she had been so bossy. And Seojun had been so rude to her. Feeling foolish, Seojun buried his head in his hands, groaning.

"Aargh! And I spoke so casually to her."

"You really didn't know?"

"Of course I didn't! I just thought Lee Suho was friendly with her because he's friendly with everyone!"

"Well... now you do know. It doesn't change anything. Sujin is still Sujin."

Seojun looked at Chorong, a little annoyed. "She's not Sujin. She's Kang Sujin. Kang Sujin."

Chorong scoffed. "Yah! You said she wasn't your girlfriend."

"Of course she isn't!" Seojun hissed.

"Then why do you always act so jealous when I act familiar with her?"

"Because... because..." Seojun looked flustered. He was saved from answering when the elevator doors chimed open and suddenly the two men were surrounded by cameras flashing in their face.

"Are you the famous Flower Boy of Seoul?"

"Is it true that Move Consulting helped turn your business around in just half a year?"

"Sources say that you and the CEO Lee Suho are best friends. Is that true?"

"Do you have a girlfriend?"

"Is this man your bodyguard?"

Seojun stood frozen at the onslaught of questions. Chorong took charge, pulling Seojun out of the elevator as he pushed past the paparazzi who were camped right outside the ballroom.

The journalists were not allowed in by the giant bodyguards at the entrance so Seojun found solace in the quiet of the ballroom. The room was full of guests now, all expensively dressed people talking about rich people things; economy, politics, stock market and other topics Seojun had no interest in.

He looked around, trying to find a familiar face.

"You're late." Sujin came out of nowhere.

"This is for you. They sent it over." Chorong gave the garment bag to Sujin.

"Ugh. Its my coat. Can you hang this for me?"

"Sure thing. But keep an eye on this one." Chorong pointed to Seojun who's eyes were still recovering from the camera flashes, "I'm guessing media attention isn't really his thing."

Chorong left to find the coat closet while Sujin took Seojun's arm. "Sorry about that. The press tends to cover these events in case some businessman gets drunk and makes a fool of himself."

"I don't like cameras." Seojun choked on his words.

"Well the camera certainly loves you. Honestly, you should have been an idol."

Seojun clamped his mouth shut as he thought back to his high school days. Back then, all he had wanted to become was an idol. Him and another certain someone. They were going to make it big but... Seojun didn't finish that thought.

"I want to introduce to a few people. But I don't wanna do it if you're not ready."

Seojun bit his lip. He wasn't wearing any piercings right now. The make up artist had forced them off. He missed the feeling of metal as he sucked in his mouth.

"You can always attend next year." Sujin continued. "You can just relax now. I'll tell Suho--"

"No, introduce me. It's for the shop." Seojun looked at Sujin with determination. She matched his gaze, looking proud.

"Alright." She smiled. "Let's go."

Sujin went around introducing Seojun to various people, making sure to highlight his arrangements on all of the tables. She did most of the talking, but she kept prompting him to speak.

"My! What a deep voice." Many of his new acquaintances commented. Seojun received a lot of compliments about his face and his voice. Seojun took them all in stride.

"You know, I expected you to be more modest about your looks. But you're unusually arrogant." Sujin commented with a click of her tongue. Seojun smirked at her.

"Wae? Jealous?"

"Ha! As if! I'm good looking too, you know."

"Now who's being arrogant?"

"I'm simply stating facts." Sujin grinned. Seojun found himself grinning too.

Their smiles remained as comforting silence settled in. They walked around the room, arm in arm.

"You didn't tell me you owned the company."

"What? Move Consulting? Technically Move Conglomerate owns the company. I just run the place."

"You know what I mean."

"I thought you knew. It's on my card."

"I sort of threw that away." Seojun rubbed the back of his head sheepishly.

"How mean!" She punched his arm as he laughed.

Seojun lightly punched her arm too but there were spikes on her sleeves of her dress and they caught him by surprise. "Ow!"

"Sorry." She said, wincing at his pain.

"Why are you dressed in so many spikes tonight? I thought you hated this style." Seojun rubbed his hand.

Sujin gave him a strange look. "You really don't know?"

"Kang Leader-nim!" Jukyung came up to them. "They're asking for you." She pointed to the crowd of people standing in the middle of the room looking over to Sujin and Seojun.

"Ugh. Right. Wait here, Han Seojun," Sujin said in her usual bossy tone, "I have to go suck up to a few investors."

Seojun watched her walk away with Jukyung. The women looked so starkly different. Jukyung was all bright and beautiful. A true beauty inside and out. Kang Sujin was dark and mysterious. An outspoken rebel who bulldozed over everyone with her own ideas. For some reason that image made Seojun vibrate with silent laughter, sucking in his lips between his teeth.

Kang Sujin, kekekeke, riding a bulldozer, kekekeke, with a little black hard hat and everything.

While dark colors were Sujin's style, the spikes adorning her felt different. As Seojun was wondering why she'd decided on that particular dress, he heard a strange sound up above. Like metal groaning against a great weight.

Just as Seojun looked up, one of the giant chandeliers came crashing down. Everyone gasped and yelped as it did. It stopped half way, caught on a wire, giving the people below enough time to run away.

"Lim Jukyung!" Seojun heard Suho yell as he ran towards Jukyung. She stood right there with Sujin, frozen in fear. Sujin was trying to pull Jukyung away, but Jukyung was too scared to move.

Suho reached the girls just in time for him to tackle Jukyung on the ground. The move sent Sujin flying back, falling sideways on the marbled floor. The wire finally snapped, and the chandelier fell with a crash. The impact sent crystal flying everywhere.

Seojun watched with his mouth open, as everyone ran away from the center of the room. To one side of the crash were Jukyung and Suho. Suho was holding Jukyung in his arms. Some crystal had cut one side of Suho's face and his hand. But to Seojun's relief, Jukyung was fine.

On the other side was Sujin, trying to pull herself up. Her hands and knees were covered in cuts, having caught some of the shooting crystals.

Everyone rushed to Suho and Jukyung to help them. Seojun saw Taehoon and even Suah run to their CEO. No one had noticed Sujin there, struggling to get on her feet. She could see Suho and Jukyung on the other side. Seojun felt he could guess what she was feeling. Seeing Jukyung in this state made him want to rush over to her to make sure she was okay. But Lee Suho was already there and Sujin needed more help.

He caught Sujin's arm just as she got up. She looked up at him gratefully.

"Take off your heels." Seojun advised as she struggled to stand straight with the cuts on her knees.

"There's glass on the floor. I can't walk barefoot."

The building staff had gathered now, helping people to a safe distance and trying to clean up the mess as quickly as possible. Through the mess of the chandelier, Seojun saw Suho pick Jukyung up in his arms and rush her away to safety. Inspired, Seojun picked up Sujin in his arms.

"Woah!" She yelped, grabbing on to his neck, "Put me down! What do you think you're doing?!"

"Shut up." Seojun carried her over to the elevator.

"I will not! Where are you taking me?! Put me down!"

"Stop yelling at the guy who's trying to help you! Do you have a first aid kit in your office?" The elevator doors closed as Seojun bent his knees uncomfortably to press for the fifth floor.

"Yes." Sujin answered in a small voice. After a second of hesitation, Sujin's arms wrapped more tightly around Seojun's neck. "Am I heavy?" She asked quietly as the elevator went down.

"Yes." Seojun admitted. Sujin scoffed before punching him in the chest.

"Ow! I will drop you." Seojun threatened, but Sujin knew it was an empty threat. She but in her lip as Seojun carried her all the way over to her office.

"In the lower left drawer." She commanded as he set her down on one of the sofa seats. Seojun brought out the big white box full of medical supplies.

"Wow, there's a lot of stuff in here." Seojun commented as he took out cotton balls, medicine and gauze.

"I try to be prepared for any medical emergency." Sujin explained.

"Even stitches?" Seojun held up the medical stitching kit.

"I can stitch wounds." Sujin explained. "It's only for emergencies though. I'm not a doctor. Only studied medicine for a couple of years."

With a tweezer, Seojun picked out the tiny pieces of glass stuck in Sujin's skin. She winced in pain as he pulled out some of the tough ones.

"Does it hurt?" He asked, concerned.

"No." She lied. "It doesn't—ow!"

"Liar."

Sujin stuck out her tongue. Once the glass was out, Seojun began to clean up the wounds.

"Use this." Sujin pointed to an anti-septic in the first aid box. "Dab it on the cotton pads."

Seojun did as instructed. "So... you studied medicine." He asked causally. Sujin looked at him as he bent his head over her hand.

"Yeah... I stopped though."

"Why?" He probed gently.

"It was my father's dream. Not mine. I wanted to live my own life... my own way."

Seojun looked up, his intense, mean looking eyes boring into hers. "And what is your dream?"

Sujin found it hard to form a coherent thought. Normally her reply would have been the generic "I want to help companies do better, so that's why I started this company with my best friend." But that was a lie. And she couldn't lie when Seojun was looking at her like that.

"I don't know. I don't think I have one." She admitted. It was the first time she had done so.

"Then what are you doing at Move?" Seojun switched to cleaning up the wounds on her knees.

"I don't know. This is Suho's dream really. I just wanted to support him-ow!"

"Sorry." Seojun pulled away. He took out ointment next. He gently put it first on the cuts on her hands, then on her knees. Sujin watched as his bony fingers delicately covered each tiny cut with the ointment. Those were the fingers she had seen work deftly with flowers so many times.

It surprised both of them when Sujin suddenly took Seojun's hands in hers.

"Han Seojun... you like Lim Jukyung, don't you?"

Seojun blinked, unsure of what to say.

"You love her, don't you?"

Silence.

"I think its beautiful, this love you have for her. But I don't think she can receive it."

Seojun clenched his jaw, unable to move or breathe. Was Sujin trying to insult him? Was she trying to hurt him? What was she doing?"

"She won't have this love. So why not give it to me?"

Seojun's eyes widened.

Sujin's eyes glistened as her feelings overtook her self-control. "If Jukyung doesn't want it, then give it to me. I'll cherish it, I promise."

She waited for him to respond. But Seojun couldn't. His mind was going haywire.

What is she saying? Is she saying she likes me? Why would she like me? She's a big shot company's COO and all I have is a small flower shop.

Now, a small tear fell from her eye. "Wae?" She sniffed, wiping her cheek furiously, "Am I not good enough?"

Before Seojun could respond, the door to the office burst open and a furious looking Suho stalked in. He seemed surprised to find Seojun there.

"Ah, Suho," Sujin bent away from him to quickly recover. "What brings you here?" She forced a smile.

Suho didn't address Sujin. "Han Seojun please give us a minute? I need to talk to Sujin." Suho said, looking a little out of sorts. Seojun figured it was because of the chandelier incident.

He looked at Sujin unsurely, but she said, "Give us a minute, would you?" He walked out, leaving the childhood friends behind. Just as he reached the elevator, he realized he was still holding the ointment.

Ah, darn it. I'll just go back in and quickly leave it in her office.

Seojun ran back but just as he was about to knock on the door, he heard voices. Arguing.

"This presentation was made months ago! And I told Suah—"

"Suah said you specifically gave her a different file. And told her there was no need to check—"

"I gave her the other file! Its not my fault she forgot! I thought I—"

"You thought you should share pictures of me and Jukyung during our presentation and the board would fire her. You really think you can fool me with your excuses, Sujin-ah?"

The door to the office was open just a crack. Seojun saw Sujin and Suho standing, glaring at each other.

"Its lucky Suah checked the presentation beforehand and told me what you had done. I can't believe you would actually do this to me." Suho sounded angry. "You knew I had to keep my relationship with Jukyung a secret. You knew how important Jukyung is to me. So, what's the meaning of this?"

A long pause followed. Seojun saw Sujin's face become hard like stone. It was the complete opposite of the vulnerability she had shown him just a few moments ago when she had confessed. Seojun almost didn't recognize her.

"Tell me. Why did you do this?"

"Its because I liked you." She said coldly. When Suho didn't say anything, she continued. "I see you're not surprised. Were you aware of it?" She curled her lip in anger.

"Are you kidding me right now?!" Suho's voice was like the calm before a storm. "Didn't you say you liked Jukyung too?"

"Jukyung is sweet and warm hearted. But I don't give a shit about her. The only person I care for is you. And if she's going to steal you from me--"

"Steal me?" Suho laughed incredulously. "Am I a toy?"

"Are you laughing?"

Seojun couldn't see Suho's face, but he knew the man was in disbelief. "You..." Suho said, "You don't seem like the Kang Sujin I know."

A chink appeared in Sujin's tough mask. Her cheeks got red as her eyes began to water a little. "I'm still that same Sujin, Suho. You're the one who's changed. And why... why the hell is it her out of all people?! I've been by your side for ten years! Ten years I've been killing my self to run this shitty company all because of you! Ten years I've been dying for you to look at me just once! And that girl just waltzes in, and you fall for her after just ten days?"

Suho let out a breath of disbelief, "I never forced you to run this company with me, Sujin. I always thought you wanted this just as much as I did."

"I never wanted this! I never wanted any of this! All I had ever wanted—" The words died in Sujin's throat as tears start to fall. "Aish." She furiously wiped her face. But the tears didn't stop.

Suho scoffed then turned to move. Seojun quickly stepped out of the way as Suho stormed out, not noticing anyone was there. He threw away a USB on the ground. The device bounced off of the wall and cracked in two. Seojun saw Sujin falling back down on the sofa, her head buried in her hands. He couldn't believe what he had just heard.

He stepped into Sujin's office, unsure of himself but needing her to clear the situation. "Is it true?"

His voice surprised her. She gasped as she sat up straight. "You scared me!"

"Did you try to hurt Jukyung?"

"What?"

"I don't fully understand what you did. But you tried to hurt Jukyung, didn't you?"

Sujin's mouth curled in disdain. "Seriously? You too? What, is Jukyung's family here too to avenge her? Get out, Han Seojun. I've had enough of Lim Jukyung's admirers for one day."

"Yah!" Seojun yelled, his eyes glaring. Sujin glared back, unaffected. He never could intimidate her the way he could other people.

Sujin got up, squaring her shoulders. "What exactly is it you want to hear? That I tried to ruin Jukyung's life?" Her expression was cold and unreadable, "Do you believe that I did?"

"I believe you're a twisted person who is capable of anything." The words were out before Seojun could stop them.

Sujin smiled darkly, "Fine. I should tell you the truth then. Yes. I did that. I tried to expose her relationship with Lee Suho so that the board would fire her, and she would break up with him."

Seojun couldn't believe what he was hearing. Was this really the same person who had been working tirelessly to help his little shop? Was this the same Kang Sujin?

Sujin chuckled bitterly, "Ah, you and Lee Suho both make the same faces. How funny."

"Is this all a joke to you?"

"Yes. It is. Now leave. Get back to your precious Lim. Ju. Kyung. I'm sure she's just dying to have so many guys fawning all over her."

"Why are you doing this?" Seojun asked. "Is it because of Lee Suho?"

"Yes." She said without hesitation.

Seojun's nostrils flared. "Then what was with that confession you gave me? What was all that about giving you my—"

"Shut up! Shut up! Shut up!" Sujin snapped at him. "Why can't you just leave me alone?!" She pushed him. He didn't budge.

"Were you just lying? Was it part of your plan?"

Sujin's breath shuddered. "Yes. Yes, it was a lie."

Liar. She's lying, Seojun's instinct told him. He ignored it. "Why?"

Sujin smirked darkly, "Jukyung took something of mine. I wanted to take something of hers."

Seojun gulped. "Kang Sujin... were you always such a piece of trash?"

Sujin took a step towards him, her face was now just inches from his. He could smell her spicy cologne, a stark contrast to his own floral scent. For a second his eyes went to her lips, full, soft and red. He recalled touching something red and waxy once and realized it had been lipstick. He couldn't recall when he had done so, however, or why Kang Sujin's lipstick would be on his fingertips.

"Jukyung did nothing to you." He told Sujin, "It sickens me that you would hurt her like this."

Sujin clenched her jaw, "I can't forgive someone who takes what's mine."

Suddenly, Seojun was transported back to high school, back to when a former friend's foot was kicking him in his face.

Don't you know, Han Seojun, that I never forgive people who take what's mine?

Seojun suddenly flinched away from Sujin. "I can't look at you anymore. Don't come into my shop again."

He walked out, leaving Kang Sujin all alone in her office.
