The Revolving Door
Danny had calmed down, he was curled up next to me in my bed-mom was working late and I was scared. We had been in limbo of this weird curse, it's like his grandparents had created this revolving door of hell. We didn't know when we would die, or if we would live, or if either of us were even safe from each other.
I was choking on my own fear and my mind was being consumed by the many ways I could end up dead within a few weeks or even months.
I got out of bed and my long hair fell lose down my cornflower blue t shirt that layered over my matching daisy printed shorts. Danny was silent-and comfortable looking. But there was no way I could sleep, so the conclusion for me was to drink root beer as I sat at the table. The metal straw clinked inside the glass as I settled into my chair propping open my laptop.
I turned on something to watch taking occasional sips of the fizzy drink. As good as it was there was the uncomfortable feeling of it when it went down my throat-almost as if it were a sandpaper edge running over my throat.
A door upstairs creaked and I peered at the stairs expecting to see a sleepy eyed Danny. I sat there staring off into space for a minute, but Danny didn't appear. In fact no one did. I stood up and walked up the steps looking straight down the hall.
My brothers door was open. I hated going in there. Being reminded of the past and how it led me to where I am today. I hated that I had lost something irreplaceable and that a part of him was here in this house everyday. I took a deep breath and walked into the room. Everything was clean, like it had been.
My eyes glided over to the window that was open, and there was no reason for it to be open-I walked over closing it shut. Then turned back around and saw Danny standing with his arms crossed in the doorway.
My heart jumped and I looked at him startled-"Crap you scared me." I said laughing out of relief.
"Sorry I didn't mean to I just-uh I couldn't sleep. What room is this anyway, I have never seen it." He said walking in. I didn't want him to walk in, he was invading my personal space and the thing I cared about most pressing the issue. But I didn't stop him. I let him approach me.
"It's my brothers room." I said, his face fell as he looked around. "Oh.." He said, his eyes sauntered the perimeter examining the bed and the dusty shelves and the toy box left open because of the overloading amount of action figures.
"I'm sorry I shouldn't have came in here, I can leave if you want." He said, I forced a smile and walked towards the door. "Actually let's go downstairs, we can have a snack or something because I can't sleep." He nodded and we walked out shutting the door behind him. He ran down the stairs and I followed only walking. By the time I reached the bottom of the stairs he was already grabbing a bag of sour cream and onion potatoe chips in the kitchen.
I walked towards the pantry and took a bag of jumbo marshmellows and a jar of peanut butter rather craving something sweet. We settled onto the couch with our snacks and let the tv play as backround noise. He threw some chips in his mouth and shoved his hand back in the bag.
He smiled at me as his blue eyes twinkled with joy.
I grabbed a marshmellow and dipped it into the creamy peanut butter, then at a bite out of it and enjoying the taste of the two things mesh. "Does that even tastes good, because it looks sticky and gross." I rolled my eyes and swalloughed, "yes it is good. Don't yuck my yum by the way, sure it may be weir to put the two together, but one day I had a spur of the moment craving that actually turned into something good." He smiled and set the chip bag down on the coffee table.
He brushed his hands on his pajama pants and grabbed a marshmellow. I smiled feeling pleased and pointed the jar out to him ad he put some peanut buter on his marshmallow.
I sat there taking more for myself waiting for his reaction as he took his first bite. He scrunched his face up and shook his head, "not for me." He said. "wow I actually thought you would like it." "sorry to dissapoint." He said, then grabbed his chips snacking again.
My mom walked into the house looking tired and stressed, "hey guys, and by the way Danny you have to leave soon." She said. Then headed to her room to sleep, I looked at him frowning as he got up. "I'll just stay at a hotel or something to keep away from my grandparents, or just try to hide out somewhere and sleep in the house." I nodded sad he had to go. He embraced me tightly and kissed my head pulling away and grabbing the chip bag He shoved it into his personal bag and swung it onto his shoulder.
"Well, goodnight. But hey I'll see you tommorow." I nodded and he left the house.
And as quick as he left, I felt scared all over again.
