The Eve Of Halloween
Stores were selling out on candies, kids already wearing costumes because of being too impatient, and parents already giving them the basic rules before tommorow even started.
But my mom was gone once again and my bedroom was providing me with little entertainment as I sat on my bed looking out the window. Some kids were playing soccer in the front yard of the house across the street.
Leaves scattered around on the other side of my window, the cookies were probably cold now that layed on my plate. I removed it from my vanity and then sat at it looking at my face trying to brainstorm make up for my costume tommorow.
The front door closed with a bang downstairs and made me jump. Mom must be angry, slowly downstairs I crept hoping she wouldn't yell at me. "Mom? You okay?" Silence. She was nowhere, I grabbed a knife from the kitchen drawer and tiptoed through the house. Noone was around, it was just me in the empty home. But it didn't make sence that there was a bang, I put back the knife and leaned against the counter feeling foolish.
Outside it was raining which was the usual, my mind went calm and my eyelids grew heavy. Nothing. Nothing to do at all. At least there was hope for tommorow and me doing something fun with Danny. Least that was my hope for what would come.
Something about today wasn't right, seemed off. An unsettling feeling washed over me and sent me walking back to my room and closing the door completely behind me. A creak came from the floorboards as I told myself, "it's just the house settling." I said it untill I actually believed it, then layed down and went on my phone.
No new messages.
Basically noone wanted to talk to me, that was new. Next thing I knew, I was ordering myself a pepperoni pizza that would arrive in fifteen minutes. Deciding to wait downstairs left me turning on a show and snuggling with a cover in my pajamas sprawled on the couch.
As the later it got the more tired I became, waiting for what seemed like hours untill the doorbell finally rang. This time I checked the peephole and answered grabbing my pizza and leaving a tip. It was steaming when I threw open the cardboard top, but it didn't stop me from taking a slice.
The gloopy thick yellow cheese pulled from the pizza and hung from my mouth. I picked it up with two fingers and threw it in my mouth licking my lips and eating the greasy cheese. "Mhmm."
At this rate being alone wasn't bad at all.
...
My stomach was hurting by the time the second episode ended, five slices were consumed and a part of me wanted the last three. But I couldn't push myself any further than I had already done so.
Mom walked in and then locked the door with a huge sigh leaving her lungs. "Aww thank god, pizza." She said grabbing the box and folding it. She took it to her room not even saying a word, so I followed. "How was your day mom?"
"Really tiring, glad you got this pizza because I have eaten nothing today." "Mom, you know it's good for you to take food with you. Don't need you passing out somewhere," she laughed and nodded. "Okay, I can do better and will. Promise." She smiled and then sat on her bed and ate a slice, I closed the door for her and made my way back down the narrow steps.
My spot on the couch was still warm when I sat down and snuggled the cover. The tv was twelve minutes through the movie that was on and my eyes felt dry and tired even. I licked my chapped lips and crossed my arms into a fold the kept some warmth in the cover.
Danny walked in, and he had a half smile on his face. "Surprise, I decided to visit. How are you doing?" He asked, I gave a thumbs up and he sat next to me, "just was curious what you were dressing as tommorow."
"I'm going to be an angel, I know kind of clichè but I like the idea." "Okay, sounds good to me, guess I will be the devil then." His smile sent a chill down my spine and he got up sauntering to the kitchen.
"Have any food?" "No." "Darn, too bad. Was feeling really hungry, want to get some with me?" "I'm not very hungry, no offense but why are you here?"
"Just wanted to drop by. I missed you."
It seemed this guy couldn't stay away from me for ten minutes, it was kind of suffocating and creepy in a way. "Well, I'd like to be alone. It's just that we see eachother tommorow so let's not spoil it by also seeing eachother now." Thunder roared and he rolled his eyes, "fine." He snatched his coat and left out the door slamming it so hard that it made the pictures on the wall shake.
Something with him wasn't right either today, it could be that the evil of Halloween was in the air and making everything so much more odd, or it was something bigger.
That was a worry, and I hoped it wasn't the case.
...
I fell in my bed and got under the covers as the darkness consumed me. It was already really late and I had felt beyond tired, my eyes were strained and eyelids heavy. So I turned over in my bed and closed them trying to shut everything out and sleep.
