Family Matters
Mom was in her room still getting ready for our day together, all I did was some simple make up and threw on one of my antique dresses and heels. Danny had sent me a million texts saying his parents adored me, loved me, and wished I was a part of them. With that being said it sort of sent some chill down my spine. A soft knock on my door caught my attention and my mom appeared with a red lipped smile. She had on a blue pair of jeans and a blouse. Her salmon colored heals were clanking on the floor as she approached me. "Alright, you ready for our big day?"
It would hurt her for me to say no so all that I did was nod.
She led me out my room and grabbed her purse before locking the house and getting us into the car. To much surprise it was a blue clear evening and it was cool but not too cold. This town is always so used to rain, it happens so often that noone has to worry about taking hour long showers.
"So it came to my thoughts that we should swing by that new barbeque restaurant and then go to the movies, and if neither of us are too tired we can go see your grandparents by the end of it all." She says, I fold my manicured hands in my lap and smile at her. "Okay that sounds nice enough." "Look, you and I have had some great distance between eachother since the incident, but let's not let it change us anymore okay?" I nodded trying to shake away the thought, but yet, it didn't work.
Flashback...
My brother had on his boots and a flannel and jeans. He was all packed up and ready for his and dad's big camping trip. This was the fourth year they were doing it, me and mom would be here painting our nails having cartons of ice cream, and staying up for hours on end. It was a good way for us to hang with eachother in seperate but fair ways. My dad was all covered in his clothes too, and had his gear on his back and my brother's in his hand. "Okay bud, you ready?" He asked. "Yup, got all I need! Are you ready dad?" My dad smiled wide laughing a bit, "always." They went out the door climbing into he car, as they drove off my mom set a tray of a dozen cupcakes on the table. She had three diffrent colored frostings, some sprinkles, and candies. It was all set up in such a perfect manner, "help me make these pretty will you?" She said, I walked over taking a clean silver knife. Then set a huge glob of blue into my piping bag. It smeared the sides and fell to the tip where it was pushed out an made a huge perfect swirl on the chocolate cupcake.
Then I put some white pearl sprinkles and my mom smiled, "wow you are just so perfect at that." "Awww thanks, I try my best."
Flashback ends...
"Meagan? Honey are you having another flashback?" My mom asked concerned, "yes. But it's alright, I'm okay. Let's just enjoy today, for us." She smiled at this and nodded as she took a turn and continued down the road.
...
My mother and I sat at a small table in a dark section of the livley new resturaunt, people were laughing and talking over plates full of slow cooked meats. Me and my mom only had a cold glass of water to enjoy for the time being. It was turning to an orange glow just outside and the leaves were spun into a mini tornadoe. Mom opened her menu and took a gentle sip of water, and set the glass back down on the wet condensated ring. Our waiter came over, he flashed an overly practiced smile and prepared himself to write. "What may I get you guys this fine October evening?" "May I have your smoky brown rib plate with the coleslaw and rolls." He nodded quickly writing it down. "For me it will be the pulled pork burger and sweet potatoe fries. And a coke." He grinned once more before taking our menus and disappearing somewhere else.
"Okay, so tell me about Danny. He and his family seems really, well, intresting." "He is a really nice guy, treats me well. But, his parents are really strange and kind of creepy." I say, my mom looks confused.
"Glad you agree." The man came back and set my COKE on the table and then left again, I sipped the brown fizzy substance through my clear straw as it popped down my throat. My mom searched tye room and then a sigh fell from her lips. "Remeber when your father and your brother would both try grilling for hours the perfect ribs. And we would pile it with sauce and just eat these mountains of ribs, we wouldn't even eat anything else, just that. I just miss them you know, so much." My mom held her necklace with her fingers and tried to shake away the thought. But even with all that was distracting around us, she couldn't get it off her mind now.
"so, are you looking forward to trying this new place?" Mom nodded with an empty smile, everyone's voices were stating to cloud my thoughts and emotions.
My nose perked up at the smell of pork, and I turned to see our waiter balancing our meals on his arms, he gave me my plate and then gave my mom her's she handed him the money we owed so we can leave as soo as we were finished.
Mom ate some of her roll, as for me I went straight for the burger leaving a big gaping bite in the delicacy. "Mhmhmm, that is so delicious. It's really smokey, sweet, fresh, salty, and just too god to be true." My mom laughed, "yeah mine is actually pretty good too. Glad that you're enjoying it." Mom said with some rib flesh half chewed in her mouth. The meat somehow found it's way in-between my teeth sticking there which I knew would suck getting rid of later.
For now I just kept chowing down on my burger and shoveling fries into my mouth.
My mom's gaze went to me as here eyes were forced to express the shock that was behind them. "You have always been a fast eater just like me, sometimes I just manage to forget." Her plate was already empty of the coleslaw and two ribs. She gulped down some water and went back to work on the food that remained on her plate. My fries were gone but half the burger was still left, my stomach ached in fullness as I grabbed for my soda glass. Taking a sip, my mom threw down on her last rib and licked her saucy fingers. "I am really full." I had said, mom laughed and only shrugged.
We only took five more minutes before finishing, she grabbed all her belongings and left with me striding not too far behind her. Before she got into the car I noticed something, she kept on walking and eventually got in the car most likely waiting on me. Inside the closed shop was a flashing light near the left back corner. Curiosity bumped around in me as many possible thoughts as of to what it is popped in my mind. Was it a worker, an intruder maybe, who knew.
But, it was probably best to steer clear from whatever it was. Mom smiled at me curiously as I hopped in. "You okay hun?" She asked, nodded and then she smiled taking us to the theater next.
