Part 2: Alive
"What's next? Taking the fox you shot to the vet as well? You should've killed the runt right then and there." The Farmer kept his eyes on the dusty single lane road ahead.
"In front of the children? And tell them what?" said Mistress.
"You can come up with something. We can still do it, you know, kill him, and tell the kids he died at the doctor's." He took a sharp turn right, and the bunny slid sideways in his cage.
"Hey, careful." Wadded papers, a lollipop, and a cell phone fell on the floor next to the pet carrier at her feet. Mistress grabbed the phone. "I've already promised Maggie that she'd have him. She's been asking for a pet, and it'd do her good to take care of something. And Louis said he'd help."
"It's not as if they don't love your rabbit stew, and this one would've ended up in it sooner or later." The Farmer turned on the radio.
The stitches on the bunny's hind legs hurt, and he could still feel the fox's phantom teeth on them. But the bunny was coming home. Alive. He was looking forward to seeing his mother, brothers, and sisters, and even Opal-the-Pig would be a comforting, familiar sight.
