HAVEN MURPHY'S SUMMER HAD gone horribly wrong. For every good moment, there were five bad ones there to weigh her down. Like getting closer to her cousin, for example, only to find out his father was the one that caused the car accident that killed her own dad. Or chasing down the fever dream of four hundred million in gold, only to almost die more times than she could count. Even falling for the boy of her dreams resulted in them having to help a friend escape murder charges. And then that friend died too! Haven Murphy didn't think she'd ever be happy again. Her life was a series of constant low points, where even her new boyfriend and people she used to see as her best friends weren't enough to keep her afloat. Instead, they were the anchor tied to her ribcage, the constant tug on bone to stay beneath the surface.

Haven Murphy had become exactly what she used to detest. Someone who ran first and thought later, the person who bailed when things got hard. Maybe, she was more like Sarah Cameron than she thought she was.

But when John B and Sarah aren't as dead as the police department of Outer Banks made them out to be, she finds herself back at the very beginning. Again. Only this time around, she's entirely alone, and her former comrades are the predators in the lion's den. She used to think friendship was all she'd ever need to feel content in life, but friendships like that aren't made to last for the wolf in sheep's clothing.

Haven Murphy really is better off alone.
