Chapter 2: Glowed (Hades' POV)
I blew out another puff of smoke from my cigarette before throwing it to the ground, crushing the butt under my shoe. I stared down at the flattened cigarette. I shouldn't litter, huh?
I crouched down and picked it up, throwing it in the trash can beside me while waiting for the light to turn green so I could walk across the street. I was looking around at the people of New York, who looked just as miserable as the city itself.
No smiles, all frowns. No hope in their eyes, no happiness on anybody's face. Every person here just looks stressed, swarmed, and overwhelmed. Like they're drowning in their work. Well goodness, why work such a stressful job then? I have no emotion to feed off of here for my own pleasure. It's usually fun to watch people in misery, but not when everybody is in misery.
I looked across the street, my brows furrowing at the sight of a girl. She seems extra miserable. More than the other clowns here. Bad day for her, huh? She's on the phone too. And she looks like she's lying to whoever she's speaking with.
I like liars. We get along well.
The light turned green for us and the crowd around me started moving forward. I followed, blending in with the crowd.
She hung up the phone and- Goodness, why can't I take my eyes off of her? She kept walking, a box tucked under her arms. Ah, she's freshly fired.
I walked past her, her arm brushing against mine. I stopped abruptly, turning to look at her when I felt the chills invade my skin.
She turned around, looking at me. "Sorry." Her eyes. Oh shit, her eyes. They were glowing. They glowed.
"It's all right," I replied.
She blinked in surprise and they glowed even brighter. "You're British," she chuckled. We heard a car horn and we both looked at the cars. "Sorry," she chuckled awkwardly before turning around and quickly walking to the other side of the sidewalk.
I'm the only one standing in the middle of the road now. The man honked repeatedly and I huffed, rolling my eyes and turning him. I stared at the car, the horn slowly dying out. I could see through the windshield that the man was trying to honk but his honk won't work now. For the next five minutes.
I finished walking to the other side and kept walking. I tilted my head to one side, staring at the ground in confusion while walking.
Who and what the hell was that? Her eyes glowed. Really glowed. The green and hazel in them turning almost gold, the gold specks being highlighted even more and burning brighter. That's weird. Really weird.
That's never happened to me while I was in this realm or my own realm of the underworld. In this life of mine or any other, I never experienced that.
Things are different from what people think of us. People think we're immortal, which we are in a sense. We're immortal here. But not in our own realms. In the underworld, I wouldn't exactly be called immortal. I could be killed there, but I'd be back the next day in a new body, with a new age, a new face, and the same memories. If you look at it in that sense, I'm way beyond the age of twenty-four. But in this body, with this face, this accent, this voice. I've only had twenty-four years. And I quite like this body, voice, and appearance that I have, it would be a tragic end to this one.
I should ask the Fates for the same face since they're the ones in charge of life and death both in this realm and in every other. When someone or something dies, how, why, when they're reborn, where they're reborn... The Fates decide it all. The three goddesses who I can never get along with. They seem more like three rude and arrogant bitches to me but I can't say anybody from the underworld isn't arrogant. We're gods in every sense possible, we're all bound to get a little arrogant.
And not so surprisingly, I'm the worst of them all.
I continued walking to the club that I own here on earth. I don't come here often, maybe once every two or three years, but when I do I tend to stay for a long time. So, to keep up the human act, I need to have some sort of employment and some source of money. So I bought a club and remade the entire place. I walked in through the doors, passing the neon sign that read its name.
Enchanted.
I passed the manager I had hired and climbed the stairs up to my office, strolling in and falling into my chair. I have a computer here, just for show. I sat there. Staring out the huge glass window that showed me a view of the city and also played as my balcony. I stood up and walked over to the other huge glass window that was directly across my desk which had a view of the club under me. The employees were all getting ready to open this evening.
Six to Six. Those are the timings of Enchanted. From six in the evening to six in the morning.
I pulled out another cigarette and my matte black lighter, lighting it while holding it between my lips before pocketing the lighter once again. I rolled up the sleeves to my black button-up as I heard his voice.
"What do you do here all day? Just stand there and stare at your employees?"
I turned around, blowing out a puff of smoke. "I own the club, Adonis. I have to make sure my employees are actually running it properly."
He sat in my chair, looking at me. He shouldn't waste his teleportation powers on appearing at my office. "I've decided to hate you in this life."
"Hmm, why is that?"
"The Fates have been too kind. They gave you a pretty face and a pretty accent. It isn't fair."
"You'll have your chance," I smirked, walking to the other window and looking down at the city. I'll keep my experience with the glowing eyes girl to myself for now. When I know enough, I'll ask Adonis about it. I've never experienced this before but I'm sure somebody in our realm has. Some god has. Maybe I should ask my brothers instead, they're likely to know more than Adonis. "Are you here as a customer tonight or just as my friend?" I questioned.
"Until the club opens, I'm here as your friend. Once it opens, I'll be a customer. Your first of the night since that means I'll get a free drink," he said smugly.
"That only applies to human customers. Sorry," I smirked back.
He rolled his eyes, getting out of my seat and sitting on the couch across my desk instead. "I envy you," he deadpanned.
"Do you hate me or envy me? Choose one."
"I hate and envy you. You wake up at noon every single day and come to this club only to do nothing but sit up here. And I was given a mundane, mortal job of being head chef at a restaurant. It isn't fair."
"What difference does it make when you use your magic every single day to skip work? You'll be in trouble when we get back home," I said pointedly, tapping the ash off into the glass ashtray on my desk.
"You'll punish me, Hades? Your best friend?"
"I thought you hated me," I chuckled.
"As if," he scoffed, sending me an innocent smile.
"Get back to work, Adonis. You can come here as a customer when the club opens and you can come here as my friend when your shift is over. Goodbye."
He rolled his eyes and stood up, fixing his shirt. "Always so unwelcoming." He scoffed once again and then disappeared, teleporting back to work. Truth be told, he probably went elsewhere. He'd do anything to avoid work.
♡♡♡
I poured myself another glass of whiskey while sitting on the back of the couch, looking down at the crowd.
The bodies swaying in the crowd to the blaring music, under the bright, neon lights. To the people who sat at the bar, drinking their Friday nights away. To the couples sitting in the booths, sucking each other's faces off.
Let's see how many sinners I can find here today. I scanned the crowd once, chuckling to myself. "Always too many to count." I put my glass down, letting the ice cool the drink a bit. In the meantime, I went to the bathroom.
I rinsed my hands under the cold water and dried my hands with the black towel. I ran my fingers through my hair and then unlocked the door. I closed it behind me and then turned to look ahead, freezing in my tracks.
What in the name of hell?
I watched as she collapsed on the couch, closing her eyes and resting her head. I frowned, tilting my head to one side. Isn't that her? The one with the glowing eyes?
She stood up, stumbling over her own feet, and walked to the huge glass window while I leaned against the door and folded my arms across my chest, watching her. She found the handle and pulled the door open, stepping out into the balcony.
I pushed myself off the door and walked quietly to the balcony door, standing there and watching her as she rested her arms on the railing and let out a loud frustrated scream.
Yes. She was definitely fired today.
