Dawn's Grief
After the eight friends and the dwarf managed to finish the vertiginous descend, they started crossing the river. Lucy skipped across the rocks smiling down at the waters of the river. When she was about to be slipped on one of the rocks, Trumpkin helped her preventing her from falling off of it. By the time they reached the other side of the river, daylight began to fade into darkness. So Peter and Edmund decided they would make camp at the clearing of the forest. The friends gathered up the sticks to make fire. Lucy helped Trumpkin carry some of the sticks and put them in the campfire. But Esther, who was still angry at Dawn and the Pevensie siblings, didn't help them gather up the sticks. Instead, she went to the riverside away from the others for some time alone.
Edmund decided to go over to Esther to have a talk with her. "Hey, uh..Esther?" Esther turned her head around to face her boyfriend but not in a surprised look. "Oh, it's you." She said in a not very excited voice.
"When are you going to tell me that you're upset?" Edmund asked her.
"I don't want to talk about it." Esther replied, turning her head away from him and to face the river. But Edmund wanted more information from his girlfriend.
"Is it true?" He asked. "Back on the boat ride, Trumpkin told me you were upset at us for leaving Narnia that you turned yourself into your mother."
Esther's eyes turned red. "I SAID I DON'T WANT TO TALK ABOUT IT!!" She exploded, making a huge stomp on the ground forming into ice. Edmund was surpised. "Geez, I'm sorry." Edmund was not fully scared of it as he had seen many scary faces the last time he was in Narnia. But he tried to talk her down.
"Esther please..I thought of you a lot when my siblings and my friend left Narnia." He tried to explain. "We always kept this land in our hearts and never lost hope in returning!"
Esther was not in the listening mood. She used her magic to push Edmund back. She gasped noticing how far she pushed him. Her eyes turned their normal colour and she fainted. Edmund caught her. "Help, HELP!!" He cried out. "Somebody help me!!" The group ran over to him and Esther.
"Ed, what happened?" Peter asked.
"Esther, she-she went insane..." Edmund said, stammering.
"Was she using her powers?" Trumpkin asked him. Edmund nodded. "She...turned evil." He told the dwarf. They all gasped. Trumpkin groaned. "I warned you, your majesty. This is what's weakening her powers." He told him again.
Edmund's eyes widen. "Oh dear.." He gasped. Edmund carried Esther to the campground along with his siblings, the dwarf and the Jameson siblings. He gently laid her down and Lucy took out her cordial. And she let a drop fall into Esther's lips. "Is she going to be alright?" Jane asked Lucy.
Lucy looked at Jane. "Hopefully." She said. Esther coughed a little and eyes opened up a bit. Edmund came to her. "Esther I'm so sorry." Edmund apologized. "We're sorry we left you behind when we were here the last time...please!"
Esther turned away and hid in Daniel's chest. "I don't want to hear it, Ed." She sniffled. "I don't even want to hear from all you five either! Well, Lucy is fine..." The other four looked at Lucy confused. "Huh?"
Lucy shrugged. "I don't know."
"Well then.." They all shrugged and decided to take a rest by the campfire. Edmund turned to Trumpkin. "Esther was never like this to us before." He said to the dwarf. "What can I do to get her love me again?"
The little dwarf sighed. "I don't know much about love, your majesty." He replied. "Give her some time and space, try to show her you love her." Edmund nodded, although it may not be easy at this time and although Trumpkin may or may not be telling him the truth. Esther has fallen asleep in Daniel's arms and Edmund was looking up at the sky, trying to think of a way to get his girlfriend back. Susan and Lucy also fell asleep, except Dawn and Jane. They both were too busy looking up at the sparkling stars in the night sky.
"The stars are so beautiful at night." Dawn said dreamily.
"They're a lot more beautiful than in our world." Jane agreed. Dawn nodded, focusing her gaze at the stars. "Is Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne watching over us up there?" She asked her sister.
Jane smiled. "Of course." She said.
"I wonder if they are any of those stars.." Dawn murmured. Jane nodded. "Only Esther and Aslan would know, right?" She asked.
"Probably." Dawn replied. She then turned her focus back to the night sky. "I miss them so much." She sighed.
"So do I." Jane added. Peter approached the Jameson sisters after guarding the forest.
"Hi." He greeted as he laid down next to Dawn. "I'm glad you're not mad at me." He said to her. Dawn turned her gaze to her boyfriend and smiled lightly. "Of course not!" She reassured. "You're just doing the best you can as the high king of Narnia." Peter smiled back. Dawn focused on the stars again, fingering her crucifix necklace. She bit her nails while looking somewhat sad. Peter placed his hand on his girlfriend's shoulder and his smile disappeared. "Hey...what's wrong?" He asked.
"Nothing." Dawn shook her head. "My sister and I were just...talking...about the stars." Peter gave her a a little silly smile. "Dawn, I know you're lying." He said. "You can just tell me. It's alright."
Dawn sat up from the ground and decided to get her grief off her chest. "It's my paternal grandparents...Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne." She said sadly. "It's been a year since it happened."
"What happened to them?" Peter asked.
"They died." Dawn finally said, her voice starting to crack a little. "They were killed when the German planes were dropping bombs in our town. The next morning after the first air raid, my mum, Jane, Daniel and I found them dead near their destroyed home when we went to help survivors. And since then, I felt guilty of not helping my grandparents escape to the nearby shelter." Her voice started cracking even more, as if she was going to cry any second. "It's like as if I was so selfish and responsible for their deaths! And...I miss them...!" Dawn and Jane were now crying. They tried not to wake others up from their sound.
Peter gasped and then he sighed. "I'm so sorry." He comforted the girls. "I-I didn't know..Is that why you were hiding and crying a lot before?" He asked.
Dawn nodded. "Maybe..." She wept. They tried not wake others up from their sound. Peter pulled Dawn towards him. She cried in his arms. Jane laid on the ground and cried covering her face.
Peter sighed. "I wish you could've at least told me.." Dawn bit her lip. "I didn't want you to worry." She replied. Her boyfriend nodded. He ran his fingers down her hair and Dawn snuggled into him and she pulled apart for a second.
"My sister and I also found a few things at my grandparents' destroyed home." Dawn told Peter, showing her crucifix necklace that belonged to her grandmother. And she took out a photo of her grandparents which some of the edges were a bit burnt, but shielded in a frame and showed it to her boyfriend. Peter took the necklace and looked at it. "Wow, it's beautiful." He breathed. He also looked at the photo of Dawn's grandparents and smiled. "You look like your grandmother." He complimented.
Dawn smiled a little. "How?"
"The brown eyes, the smile, nose, hair." Peter pointed out. Dawn giggled a little.
Jane also sat up. "Our grandparents' deaths are the reason why our father changed." She told Peter.
"It's true." Dawn added. "That's why he's been having bad anger issues after he returned from war. He was their only child." Peter nodded, listening. "And our family life went pretty dysfunctional because of his temper." Jane finished. "And sometimes...we don't really know what to do."
Peter nodded. "I'm sure Aslan will help your father and your family." He consoled them. Dawn nodded and wrapped her arms around her boyfriend and placed her head on his chest. Peter rubbed his girlfriend's back and kissed her head. Dawn's crying fell silent as she finally felt comfort in Peter's arms. She had another question for her boyfriend. "Peter, have you found out why Esther is angry with us?" She asked.
Peter sighed. "After we left, her mother placed her soul in her." He answered. Dawn gasped. "Oh dear. How?"
"Trumpkin told us that she turned into her mother." Peter told her. Jane gasped and nodded, now knowing why Esther was angry and cranky towards others.
"Oh no.." Dawn sighed. "So that's what caused Esther to be upset with us." Peter nodded.
"I hope that spell gets broken soon." Dawn said as she snuggled into him. "Let's just find a way to break it." Jane finished. And she and her sister fell asleep. Lastly, Dawn started to dream. Dawn found herself as a little toddler at her house. She was celebrating her third birthday with her family, including Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne. Her father brought a rich, frosted lemon cake decorated with candles to the table full of delicious food and drinks.
"Happy birthday to you, happy birthday to you." The whole family sang. "Happy birthday, dear Dawn. Happy birthday to you!" Dawn blew the candles and they all cheered and applauded. She and her whole family had cake and gave her presents. Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne's gift was bigger than others.' It was a brand new tricycle. "Yaay!" Dawn squealed with a smile. "My new trike! Love you, gwampa and gwamma." She gave them a hug.
"Love you more, darling." Grandma Anne smiled, hugging her granddaughter back. Later that day, Dawn and her grandparents brought her tricycle outside of her house. They both helped their granddaughter upon on it and assisted her in riding her new tricycle. Then the scene changed to the Blitz. The sky was dark and there were sirens everywhere. German planes flew over the city dropping bombs. Dawn's grandparents rushed out of the door to find a nearby shelter, but it was too late. At some point they were struck by a blast and were killed instantly. Then the scene changed. Penelope came out of her house to see a an army truck arriving to drop her husband off from the war. It was Samuel. she rushed to her husband's arms.
"Darling!" Samuel cried, wrapping his arms around his wife in a hug. "I've missed you!"
"I've missed you more.." Penelope wept. Samuel looked around the neighborhood. "Where's our children?" He asked.
"They were sent away...when our town was being raided by the German aircraft." His wife replied. Samuel gasped a little by that comment, but he nodded. "And my parents?" He asked. Penelope shook her head as her eyes filled with a lot of tears. "Hon, what's wrong?" Samuel asked her.
"They didn't make it.." she sobbed. "They didn't..!" Samuel's eyes went wide and confused. "What do you mean by that?" He asked her. Penelope didn't know what to say. She just kept crying harder. "Dear, tell me..please..!" Samuel commanded worryingly. "What happened?"
Penelope sniffled. "They died..!" She sobbed, almost in a whisper. "They were killed during the air raid while you were gone!"
Samuel looked motionless. He was in complete shock. He couldn't believe that his parents have died while he was gone. He panted in disbelief. "Wh-Where are they, Pen?" He asked his wife. "I want to see them.." Penelope couldn't stop crying. "Th-they're in the coroners place. In the morgue." She hiccuped.
"I want to see them." Her husband repeated.
"Not now, honey." Penelope said. "You just came. You need some rest at this time."
Samuel shook his head. "No!" He protested. "I want to see them! They're my parents!"
"Dear, please..!" His wife pleaded, tears streaming endlessly down her face. "This is not the right time!"
"There is no right time!" He half shouted. "Just let me!" Penelope sighed. She had no choice but to drive Samuel to the coroner's place to go identify Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne. The couple went into their car and drove to the coroners office. They arrived and went in and were surrounded by some deceased in body bags, who they were seemingly victims of the London bombing. Samuel and Penelope came across to the two body bags and the coroner opened them for the couple. It was Grandpa Paul and Grandma Anne. They were intact but there were some scars on their faces and parts of their clothes were damaged and burnt. And their skin had some burn marks and cold to the touch. Samuel breathed heavily. He reached his both hands to touch his parents' cold lifeless faces.
"Mother...father?" His voice began to shake a little. "Please open your eyes. Your son is here...open eyes and look at me!" No answer. Samuel, his hands shaking, removed his army coat and placed it over his parents. "Are you both cold?" He asked. "Let me warm you up...please!" Penelope stood aside from her husband to give him a little time with his parents and her parents-in-law. Samuel desperately begged Paul and Anne to wake up but it was no avail.
"Why?!" He sobbed, breathing heavily. "Why did they have to take you away? Why did God have to take both of you first but not me?!" He cried out. "I should've died in the war instead of you both!"
After minutes of crying over Paul and Anne's bodies, Samuel was in so much shock and grief that he fell butt on the ground in a faint. Penelope panicked as she caught her husband. She tried wake him up to get him coherent, but Samuel was unconscious. She called the staff over for help and Samuel was taken to a separate room to lie down. The scene changed again. Just three days after the Pevensie and the Jameson siblings returned home from evacuation, a funeral of Dawn's paternal grandparents was held. Most of her relatives came to the funeral to honor their lives. Most came except for the Pevensies. And Samuel was not the same person as he was before. And his children didn't know him anymore.
Dawn gasped as she woke up from the bad dreams. She saw that all her siblings, friends and boyfriend were still asleep. She was saddened by the bad dreams she just had that she ran off into the forest crying. Once she reached to where the ray of sun shone she curled up her legs as she sat on the ground with tears soaking her dress.
"What is the matter, my dear one?" A deep voice asked.
"I-I-I had a nightmare..!" Dawn hiccuped while sobbing. She wiped her face and looked up to see a great lion with beautiful golden fur in front of her. It was Aslan.
"About your grandparents?" Aslan asked her. She nodded. Aslan approached to Dawn snuggled against her as a sign of love and comfort. He told Dawn that she was never alone and that he will always be with her no matter what.
"What about my father?" Dawn asked Aslan. "Is there anything you can do to help him mend and change him back to way he was before?" Aslan sighed. "Yes." He said. "But I cannot tell you how I'm going to and how long it will take. But you, your mother, your brother and your sister must have to see for yourselves."
Dawn nodded and gave Aslan a big hug whispering thanks. She snuggled into him for a long time, until the scene disappeared.
