Changes in Narnia
After several minutes of rowing the two boats down the river, Trumpkin and the eight friends reached the shore. They climbed out of their boats and Trumpkin tied the boat which he and the Pevensie children riding down. The Jameson siblings and Esther got out of theirs. Esther tied her boat to the shore and Dawn, Jane and Daniel pulled it all the way off the water. Lucy wandered around and walked into the shade and noticed a black bear.
"Hello, there." She greeted the bear. Her words drew her siblings and the Jamesons' attention. The bear turned to Lucy and stood up.
"It's alright." Lucy said. "We're friends!" She was still walking until she reached a log that divided between her side and the bear's side. Trumpkin noticed it and gestured Lucy. "Don't move, your majesty!" He warned. Lucy turned to Trumpkin looking confused. She then turned her eyes to the bear growling and racing towards her. Lucy reacted quickly and started running back to where her brothers, sister and friends were. Just as the bear jumped over the log, Susan drew her bow and arrow while the others went back to their boats to grab their weapons.
"Stay away from her!" Susan commanded. As Lucy continued to run, she tripped and fell backwards waiting for her fate. Her siblings and friends ran back to where they were after grabbing their weapons from the boats.
"Shoot, Susan! Shoot!" Edmund said panicking.
The bear roared loudly as it got up and Lucy screamed in terror. And the two arrows were fired at it and the bear fell dead at Lucy's feet. She turned and saw that it was Trumpkin and Jane who shot the bear. Lucy looked at them both with her eyes wide open, shocked. Susan lowered her brow and arrow and turned to her friend and the dwarf.
Esther frowned and turned around. "Jane, you have no right to—" Daniel stopped her before she does something she may regret. "Why wouldn't he stop?" Susan asked.
"I suspect he was hungry." Trumpkin replied. Daniel gestured his sisters and friends to Lucy and they all decided to run to her aid. Esther stood back and regained herself. Peter and Dawn rushed to Lucy and helped her up. And he put his arm around his sister's shoulder. "Thanks." Lucy said in relief. Trumpkin walked ahead of the eight friends and approached the dead bear.
"He was wild." Edmund said, looking confused. Trumpkin nudged the bear with his bow, pronouncing it dead.
"I didn't think he could talk at all." Peter replied to his brother.
"I wonder why..." Dawn added. "Animals here always talked."
Esther walked up and rolled her eyes at Dawn. "I'm surprised you didn't know, smartie." She said in a snotty voice. Dawn sighed as she lowered her head. Esther ignored her reaction.
"Get treated like a dumb animal long enough and that's what you become." Trumpkin explained. He then drew his knife. "You may find Narnia a more savage place than you remember." The dwarf knelt down and began cut open the bear. Dawn turned away from the scene and covered her face, and Lucy hid her face in Peter's chest suppressing a sob.
After the dramatic scene, the dwarf and the eight friends continued their journey to search for the other Narnians and Esther followed them at last. This time, Peter took the lead. They left the river shore and entered the forest. The forest was yet confusing like a maze and it's directions were somewhat unfamiliar to the children.
"I don't remember this way at all." Susan said.
Peter turned to his sister behind him. "That's the problem with girls." He called out. "You can't carry a map in your heads." Esther made a face at Peter for saying such thing. He ignored her attitude.
"That's because our heads have something in them." Lucy told her brother.
"I wish he'd just listen to the DLF." Dawn complained. Edmund tilted his head. "DLF?" He asked.
"Dear Little Friend." Lucy clarified her brother. Esther snorted. "Friends..."
Edmund heard what she said and sighed sadly. Esther scoffed and looked away from her boyfriend. She walked ahead of him to catch up with Daniel, much to his little confusion. "Oh, that's patronizing, is it?" Trumpkin said.
"I guess.." Susan stammered. They continued following Peter until he stepped into the passage of a rock and stopped in the middle of the sight. "What's wrong?" Daniel asked. "Why are we stopping?"
"I'm not lost." Peter groaned.
"Are you sure we're going the right way, Pete?" Jane asked. Peter nodded.
"No...you're just going the wrong way." Trumpkin told him. The others emerged in. Peter gave him a puzzled look.
"You said you last saw Caspian at the Shuddering Wood, and the quickest way there is to cross at the river rush." Peter reprimanded. Trumpkin shrugged his shoulders. "But unless I'm mistaken, there's no crossing in these parts." He said. Peter glared at the dwarf.
"That explains it then." He shot back. "You're mistaken." And he walked away. The others went after him. Dawn caught up with Peter. "You don't have to be so harsh about it." She talked him down.
Peter sighed. "I'm sorry."
"It's fine." She smiled lightly. "You're just a bit stressed." Her boyfriend nodded.
Everyone continued with their walk across the forest. And Esther also started chatting with Daniel again. Esther smiled. "Daniel you shouldn't say thing about your sister like that." She laughed. Dawn heard what Esther said and turned to her. "About what?" She asked, raising her eyebrow.
"Nothing." Esther and Daniel answered at the same time. Dawn scoffed a little. "Okay." She turned away as she rolled her eyes. Esther raised a brow. "Saw that!" She called out. They all kept walking. Daniel then thought of what Esther whispered to him back at the boat ride and started snickering about it. Esther looked at him, curiously. "What?"
"Oh, um..what you whispered to me about earlier." Daniel giggled, holding his stomach trying not to laugh. Esther giggled. "Stop, you're going to make me laugh." She said. But Daniel couldn't. He stopped for a moment and started laughing harder. Susan, Edmund and Lucy walked past him and Esther. Peter, Dawn and Trumpkin and Jane also stopped. "What are you so giggly about?" Susan asked Daniel. Edmund and Lucy also raised their eyebrows at him. Esther laughed hard. "Daniel stop!" She laughed.
"Daniel what are you laughing about?!" Lucy asked.
Daniel laughed harder. "None of your concern." He replied. Dawn raised an eyebrow at her brother. "Daniel, out with it." She warned him. Esther looked at Dawn. "You can't force him to do something that he doesn't want to." She warned her.
"It's..it's just.." Daniel panted a bit. "What Esther told me earlier."
"What?" They asked in unison.
"T-t-Turkish delight!" Daniel burst out. "Edmund went to the Witch's house just to eat Turkish delight!" He ended losing it and started laughing all over again. Esther also laughed hard. Edmund's eyes went wide big. "WHAT?!" He burst out. "I beg your pardon?!"
Esther gave Edmund a funny face. Edmund frowned. "That was supposed to be secret between me and Aslan!" He reprimanded both her and Daniel. Esther smirked. "Oh well.." She said, shrugging her shoulders.
Edmund growled. He pointed his finger at Daniel. "If you ever hit on my girlfriend or even spread this secret around, you'll pay dearly!" He angrily warned. "Got it?!" Esther stopped him. "Who said anything about me still being your girlfriend?!" Her eyes turned red, smirking. She then grabbed Daniel and kissed him. "There!"
Everyone gasped in disbelief. They were shocked at Esther for doing such mean and unbelievable thing in front of Edmund. Daniel was surprised and speechless. He had never been kissed by a girl before. This made Edmund angrier.
"Why you..!" He angrily approached Daniel as if he was about to hit him, but Peter and Susan pulled him back. "Hey, easy there!" He scolded his brother. "Ed!" Susan added. Daniel hands went up. "Hey!" He pulled out his sword, but Dawn and Jane also pulled their brother back. Esther stepped in the middle. She did not look the same. Her eyes were blue and her hair formed a tint of blonde hidden in it. "You are acting ridiculous!" She angrily scolded her boyfriend.
"Break it up, you two!" Dawn scolded both Edmund and Daniel. "You both are acting like our fathers did!"
Daniel placed his sword up. "He started it!" He shot back. Dawn made a huffy breath. "You shouldn't have laughed and mentioned about this!" She scolded her brother. "You don't even know the whole stuff and he's very sensitive about it."
Daniel shrugged. "His mistake." He said. Edmund angrily struggled to get off of Peter and Susan's grips from his arms. Esther groaned. "Ed, you always made a big deal out of everything!" She reprimanded.
"Do not!" Edmund snarled. Esther raised a brow. "You traded your family for food." She said, sass to her pitch. Lucy stepped in. She could no longer take her brother and friends' fights anymore. "Esther, please!" She pleaded.
"All right, your highnesses!" Trumpkin reprimanded from few meters away from the eight friends. "Let's just go!" Esther looked at Lucy and she sooned calmed down. "Can we just keep going?" Everyone nodded. Esther walked past Edmund and they glared at each other. She grabbed Daniel's hand. Edmund gave Daniel the I'll-beat-you-later stare. Lucy and Susan placed their hands on their brother's shoulders in an attempt to comfort and calm him down. Dawn sighed softly. "Coming!" She called out and she hurried to catch up with her boyfriend.
They kept walking across the forest until they stopped at the gorge. The gorge was very high, so high that people could hardly see what was down below, except that the river is further down. Susan walked beside Peter and began to explain. "You see, overtime, water eroded the earth's soil..." but Peter rudely cut her off.
"Oh, shut up." He told her off. Jane turned her head to him. "Peter!" She gasped.
"What?" He turned to Jane.
"That's not nice!" Jane reprimanded.
"Oh..sorry." Peter said.
"It's fine," Susan brushed it off. Edmund, who was standing out of his brother, sisters and friends, looked at Trumpkin. "So is there a way down?" He asked him.
"Oh yes." Trumpkin replied. "Falling." The others turned to Edmund and the dwarf.
"Well, we weren't lost." Peter told him.
"There's a ford near Beruna." Trumpkin said. "Any if you mind swimming?"
"I can swim." Dawn said.
"Anything's better than walking." Susan added. Everyone began to walk away from the gorge, but Lucy turned and glanced back at the opposite side. "Aslan?" She gasped. "It's Aslan!" She joyfully shouted. She turned to her friends and siblings. "It's Aslan over there!"
The others looked at her very puzzled. "Well can't you see?" Lucy said, started turning back to the opposite side of the gorge. "He's right...there." But nothing was out there except for some trees. Her smile faded. Trumpkin raised his eyebrow. "Do you see him now?" He asked her. Lucy made a look as if she felt a little offended. "I'm not crazy." She said. "He was there. He wanted us to follow him."
Dawn tilted her head. "Really?" She asked. Lucy nodded quickly.
"I'm sure there are any number of lions in this wood." Peter explained to his sister. "Just like that bear."
"I think I know Aslan when I see him." Lucy grouched.
"Look." Trumpkin announced. "I'm not about to jump off a cliff after someone who doesn't exist." Esther gave the dwarf a dirty look.
"The last time I didn't believe Lucy, I ended up looking..pretty stupid." Edmund added. Everyone looked at him. Lucy smiled slightly at her brother, as she felt grateful for him believing her. Esther sighed by his comment.
"Why wouldn't I've seen it?" Peter asked Lucy.
"Maybe you weren't looking." She replied sadly.
"I'm sorry, Lu." Peter sighed and he walked away from the gorge followed by Jane, Susan, Daniel, Esther and Trumpkin. They began to move on except Lucy, Dawn and Edmund who remained at the gorge for the moment. Lucy took a moment to turn back to the opposite gorge where she thought she saw Aslan. Then she turned to Edmund and Dawn, who they gave her a sympathetic look and accompanied her to join the others.
The dwarf and the eight children walked out of the forest and to the other side of the river shore and hid behind the logs. They couldn't believe their eyes on what they were seeing. The shore was filled with Telmarine men building a large bridge from trees they have chopped off. There were campgrounds, noises of commands and falling trees, and there were huge catapults for which they were also getting ready for the future battle against the Narnians. And group of soldiers marching in lines. The children and the dwarf quickly ducked down as few other soldiers and the leader, who happened to be the evil Telmarine king appeared nearby on their horses.
"Perhaps this wasn't the best way after all." Susan whispered to Peter.
They all agreed and went back to the gorge where they were the last time. And still, there was no sign of the great lion.
"So...where exactly do you think you saw Aslan?" Peter asked Lucy. Lucy turned around and looked at her brother and the others around her. "I wish you'd all stop acting like grown-ups!" She said like as if she was about to get angry. "I didn't think I saw him, I DID see him!" She walked away.
"I am a grown-up." Trumpkin replied. Edmund, and the Jameson siblings looked at each other, trying not to laugh.
"It was right over—" Before Lucy could finish her sentence, the ground collapsed under her feet and she fell onto a ledge of the gorge screaming in terror. "Lucy!!" Dawn and Susan shrieked. "Oh no!" Jane added.
"Tsk, tsk, tsk.." Esther said, shaking her head. The seven friends shot her a look of disgust and disbelief. "What?" Esther said, shrugging her shoulders.
"That was uncalled for, Est." Peter scolded. "She could've died!"
"Yeah." Jane added. "She could be seriously hurt!"
Esther sighed. "Yes, and she is the only one and Daniel I care for." She then turned to Jane with an evil eye. "And Jane watch your tone!" She berated. "I could have you beheaded!"
Jane hung her head down in defeat.
"Don't even go there!" Dawn said angrily.
"Don't talk to my sister like that!" Daniel defended Jane. Esther shot ice at all three of them, but they dodged them. "I SAID WATCH YOUR TONE!" She yelled. They all stopped.
"Stop fighting!" Lucy called out below. "It's right here!" Esther walked ahead of everyone. They followed her lead down to where Lucy was. And they started climbing down the gorge to the narrow part of the river.
