Leave It All Behind
Stevie was twirling her baton, dancing around the field as the music boomed. Lindsey was helping to conduct a little and Christine was lounging with a glass of wine or walking about with the John standee when Mick didn't have it. They were having so much fun, Stevie's single glass of wine turned into three and she was having the time of her life. She was slightly tipsy but still very alert. When she was done playing, she went back to her son. He was never too far away. At some point Lindsey sat with them in the stands and listened to the band with eyes closed.
"Did we bring sunscreen? I don't want to burn" Stevie said.
"I don't think so, honey." Lindsey tells her. "Sorry"
"Boo"
"We can leave soon"
"No, its okay. Everyone is having a blast and Leo just loves the music. He's going to be just like daddy, my little musical genius."
"Do you think?"
"I know so. I bet he could be an amazing drummer or guitarist...or maybe he will play piano"
"He could sing, like mama"
"And daddy"
"He's going to be a force in this world" Lindsey says.
"Yes, I think he will. He's captured my heart, that's for sure"
"It's only right, considering you captured mine"
Aww...Lindsey" Stevie says, laying her head on his shoulder. "Sometimes you're so cute"
"I try"
"No you don't and that's what makes it even better"
"I will take that as a compliment. Thank you."
"It was a compliment, you silly man" Stevie kisses his jaw and looks back at her son. He's fallen asleep on her chest and she strokes his back. "You've given me such a special gift, Lindsey"
"You did all the hard work."
"Still, I would have never been so happy without you. I honestly didn't know if I would ever get this"
"Me either but I'm glad we did"
"Me too"
"I want more" Stevie says suddenly after several long minutes.
"Whatever happened to me not being allowed to touch you with my thing until he's a year old" he says, reiterating her words and she giggles.
"I don't know. Since having him, my family is truly the only thing that matters. I love writing songs and performing and dancing and touring but at the end of the day...I could leave it all behind"
"You don't mean that, do you Stevie?"
"I don't know. I think I do."
"Wow..." Lindsey sits back, stunned. "I never thought I'd hear you say that"
"I didn't either. I'm starting to think that's how I really feel. You and Leo make my life worth living. I will never stop writing but putting out a little album here and there would be enough for me"
"Buckingham Nicks?"
"Maybe"
"We would have to really think about this, Stephanie"
"I know and I'm not leaving yet, that's for sure"
"Yet..." he says, marinating on her words. She's thrown him a curve ball and it's hard to process.
"I'm going to walk around for a little bit"
"Want me to keep Leo?"
"No, I want to hold him"
"Alright, have fun. You know where I am"
"I do. I love you" she says, kissing him.
"I love you too." He mumbles. She leaves with the baby and Lindsey stays as he is for almost an hour. "Did she really just say that?" He asked into the air.
Mick joins him, mirroring the way Lindsey is seated. He's always joking around. "How's it going, mate?"
"Fine"
"Did something happen?"
"No, uh, I'm fine. Nothing happened"
"Where's Stevie?"
"Being the social butterfly she is. Probably walking around talking to people with Leo"
"Oh"
"Yeah"
It's silent for a few long moments. "And you're sure you're okay?"
"Yes, why wouldn't I be?"
"I just think you're acting weird. Are you guys having problems?"
"No, we have been perfect since Leo came."
"Well that's good"
"Yeah"
"Then I guess I will leave you with your thoughts..." Mick says, getting up.
"Wait. Um, what if your wife dropped something major on you? How would you react?"
"It would depend on what it was"
"Hmmm..."
"Care to elaborate?"
"No, I guess I can't really talk about it right now"
"Alright. Sorry I can't be of any help."
"It's okay"
"Want another beer?"
"Nah, just a coke but I'll get it myself"
"Fine" Mick leaves and passes by Stevie. "Hey are you and your old man, okay?" He touches her arm and she gives him a strange look.
"Yes, we're perfect. Why? Did he say something?"
"No, it's more like he didn't say anything at all"
"Oh"
"Right. Is something going on?"
"Not that I know of."
"Alright then. Where's the baby?"
"With Christine."
"I've been begging to hold him. She's a baby hog!"
"Well tell her I said it's your turn" Stevie says
"I will. He's the cutest little thing!"
"Thank you"
More music and more dancing, Stevie's slight buzz has worn off and Lindsey is acting mostly normal again. They all grab a little lunch while they're at the Stadium, it was brought in for them. Stevie makes herself a sandwich and a salad and eats on the grass. Leo is awake and after being nursed, he is playing with his toy again. Lindsey grabbed a burger from the grill and Mick followed suit. Christine was having a liquid lunch, per usual and everyone was talking in a very animated fashion. Things were lovely, the sun was warm and high in the sky. Lots of joking was going on. When the meal was finished, Mick took the baby and was showing him off to the members of the marching band, letting a young woman named Lucy hold him.
"I just love babies!" She gushed. "This one is especially adorable."
"It's Stevie and Lindsey's son Leo. Isn't he the sweetest?"
"Oh yes!" She said. "He's perfect. Wow two rock stars having a baby. That would be so cool to have musicians for parents"
"I bet it would be. Especially to have the two of them"
"Yeah..." she said dreamily. "Can I show him to my friend Mary?"
"I don't see why not" Mick lets the girl go and find her friend while he goes to grab another glass of wine.
Several minutes pass and he starts to worry why they haven't brought him back. He stops Lucy on the green and asks her about him.
"He's with Mary. She's the redhead, with the braids in the green shorts."
"Thank you" Mick rushes to her, baby boy nowhere in sight and she tells him the nanny took him. "The nanny?" He asks.
"Yeah, a woman with shoulder length black hair and bangs took him. She said she was his nanny. Don't all celebrities have someone to watch their kids"
"Not these two. Do you know if she's still here?"
The redhead looks around "I don't see her but she could be"
"Shit" Mick says. Lindsey bumps into him as he is walking the perimeter of the field.
"Mick, where's Leo?"
"I let some blonde hold him. Lucy."
"And then?"
"Then a redhead named Mary held him"
"Okay, then what? You're scaring me, man. Where the fuck is my son?" Lindsey yelled.
"Mary said the nanny took him. A lady with black hair and a fringe"
"We don't have a nanny. We have to find that woman. My god, I have to tell Stevie. She's going to freak"
"I know. I'm sorry."
"You're going to be sorry when she gets a hold of you. That boy is her entire world. She's even thinking about quitting the band for him, Mick!" Lindsey shouts, grabbing onto the tall man's tee shirt collar.
"Wait...what?!" Mick exclaims.
"Another time. Find that woman and find my son. Now!" Lindsey tells him. Mick gives a firm nod, following directions while Lindsey goes to tell Stevie that their four month old son is missing.
