I'm Your Mama
The black haired woman boards a bus headed to the other side of the city. She clutches her baby to her chest, hushing him to no avail. The baby cries and cries, frustrating the other passengers. The woman is nervous, bouncing the baby to quiet him.
"Are you hungry?" She asks him in a high sweet voice. The baby continues to cry as she reaches her stop. She runs into the little corner grocery store and grabs essentials, paying with a credit card that doesn't even have her name on it. No one checks and she is grateful. Out of desperation, she uses a pay phone to call her friend. "Thank God!" She cries into the phone when she answers.
"Honey, whatever is the matter?"
"Can I stay with you? Just for a little while?"
"I won't be home. I'm going on a trip west to see my sister in law again"
"I didn't know you were getting along"
"We've come to an understanding"
"Oh wonderful"
"Would you like me to ask if you can stay again?"
"Uh...." She looks at the now sleeping baby in her arms and panics. "No, um...I think I can manage. Thank you"
"You're welcome, dear. Sorry I couldn't be of more help"
"It's okay"
"When I get back we will have to catch up"
"Yes, we must. I...I've got to go" the raven haired lady says, hanging up the phone. The swift movement and the loud sound startles the baby awake and he begins to cry again. "No, no, no" she weeps. "Please don't cry! I'm your mama. I love you. Shhhhh....I'm your mama" The baby looks up, trying to reach out for her. "Shhhh, see? Everything will be okay."
She eventually gets the baby to settle. She walks down the street to a little cafe, grocery bags in hand and sits down to plan her next move. She is taken to a table and she puts her groceries down in the opposite chair, holding the baby in her arms as she sips an iced tea. "I think I can call my brother and stay with him for a while." She says to herself aloud. "And we have got to think of a name for you, sweet boy" She is quiet for a minute, thinking. "How about Devon? That's a handsome name, don't you think?" She asks the snoozing child.
She ends up ordering a little food, finding it difficult to eat with just one hand. "I guess I will have to figure this out if I'm going to be your mama from now on, huh Dev?" She smiles, stroking his chubby cheeks. "You are so cute. I hope you end up looking just like your daddy." She continues to eat when an elderly woman with blue hair and a polyester pantsuit approaches her table. She looks up, her eyes wide like a deer in the headlights.
"Your son is the most adorable thing! Look at that little dodgers outfit! Is daddy a fan?" The old woman asked.
"Uh...yes, huge fan!"
"That's so cute! Like father, like son! Playing catch and watching games. What a gift!"
"Yes"
"Where did that light hair come from? Your hair is so dark. Is daddy a blonde?"
"No, it must have come from...someone else in the family"
"Funny how that works"
"Yes, hilarious" The dark haired woman rolled her eyes, looking away so the woman who approached her wouldn't see.
"Well, I will get you get back to your lunch. Take care."
"Thank you. Have a good day" The black haired woman asks for her check from a passing waiter and pays her bill. She has to get out of here before someone recognizes them.
She hails a cab and goes back to her apartment to prepare a bag. She's going to leave the city tonight and leave no trace. She doesn't need any more attention than what she got at the cafe. She laid the baby on the couch and dropped her bags on the counter in the kitchen. She flies over to the phone and calls her brother, making sure he was able to let her stay and he eagerly agreed. He hadn't seen her in a while and missed his baby sister so much! Just as the laid the phone back down, it rang again.
"Hello?" She answered.
"We have to talk"
"About what? You made it loud and clear the last time that you were finally done with me. Don't call, don't write, don't even look at you, remember?"
"I'm sorry, um, can I come over?"
"It's not a good time"
"Do you have company?" He asks.
"Sort of. What's this about?"
"I need to see you. Something awful has happened and I, I need to talk to someone"
"You want to come crawling back after what you said to me? What you did? No way. Good bye"
"Don't hang up. Lindsey and Stevie's baby is missing"
"What does this have to do with me?" She says, her voice fluttering ever so slightly and she hopes the man on the other line doesn't detect anything strange.
"I, I think it's my fault and I...I need a friend, love"
"Don't call me love. I am not your love. You've sent a pretty strong message. And as for needing a friend- you called the wrong person." she said and hung up without hearing another word. She went over to the baby sleeping on the couch and stroked his little head. "You and your mama have got to get out here, Devon. Let's make a run for it" she says.
She heads to her room, grabs a bag from the closet and starts shoving anything she thinks might be useful into it. Toiletries are scooped up from he bathroom, carried in her arms and thrown on top of everything else and she zips it up. She checks the pocket of her jeans, making sure her little stashes are still there. She's paranoid from the drug mixing. "Perfect. Tuinal powder and little angel dust for the road" She smiles to herself, shaking the little baggies. "This will all be over soon."
Now what to pack for a baby? He had no clothes but the ones on his back. She did have diapers and formula and bottles, though so that's a start, she thought. The phone rang again and she ignored it. She grabbed the grocery bags off the counter, took her piece of luggage and locked the door behind her to go down to her car. The baby should be safe alone for a second- he's only sleeping. What could go wrong? She opened the trunk of her car and tossed everything inside, slamming it shut. "Now for my beautiful boy" she says, heading back up the stairs to her apartment. She unlocked it and went back inside. He was still asleep and she breathed a sigh of relief. She had to think fast. With no one to hold him, what would she do? She brought the baby down to her car, putting a blanket on the passengers seat and laid him down. At least this way she could keep an eye on him, she thought. "I guess we are ready to go! Let's go meet Uncle Roger, Devvy-boy! I am so happy to have found you." She kissed the baby's forehead before going back to the driver's seat. She carefully backs out of her parking space and speeds down the road to her next destination, far from prying eyes in the City of Angels.
