Day In The Sun
"Lindsey, we've got to go! We're going to be late as it is!" Stevie yelled from the bedroom. She was packing things in her diaper bag for the baby, and making sure she had everything she needed.
"We're almost done, babe" he yells back. A couple minutes later, Lindsey comes into the bedroom. "Ta-da!"
Stevie turns around and her heart melts. "Leo Valentine Buckingham, you sweet, precious thing!" She takes her son from her husband and cuddles him to her chest.
"Did I do good or did I do good?" He asks, beaming.
"You did a fabulous job. He looks just like a Dodger!"
"I pulled some strings" Lindsey says casually.
"Oh he's just so handsome. Must get it from his daddy"
"He looks just like you, Steph. Everyone says so"
"But he has your eyes. More grey maybe though"
"That's true"
"And we don't know what his hair is going to do yet. Could darken up, could get curly...you'd think with all the heartburn I suffered, he'd have much more on top"
"Hey, don't talk about my son that way!" Lindsey says playfully, taking the baby back. "Do we have everything?"
"I packed a bottle or two so you could feed him if you wanted when I'm not available to nurse."
"Great"
"And he has blankets and hats, and a pacifier...diapers and pretty much anything else he needs. Even a couple toys"
"Perfect job, Steph. You amaze me"
"Why?" She asks, a slight chuckle in her voice. "I'm not deserving of such praise"
"Don't be so modest, Stevie. You are, you're a great mother to him."
"Thank you. I love him so much"
"Maybe one day we can add more to our little clan"
"You stay away from me with that thing until he's at least a year old, Lindsey"
"That's not what you said last night"
"Shut up!" She says, turning an unnamed shade of pink. "Can we go now?"
"If you're ready" She nods and takes the bag out to the car as Lindsey follows with baby Leo.
----
Arriving at Dodger's stadium for the Tusk video shoot, the little family was greeted by Mick and Christine. John was in Tahiti so he wouldn't be there, but he was there in spirit.
"Let me see my nephew!" Christine cooed, taking the boy from Lindsey. "What have you been feeding him? He's getting so big and I feel like I've just seen him"
"He's a butterball. Look at those cheeks!" Mick says, stroking his little face.
"He's absolutely the most adorable thing!" Christine says. "You're such a good boy, aren't you Leo? You're perfect!" The tall blonde carried him around to the crew and let's them visit with him.
"So how have you been? You look amazing!" Mick says. "I cannot believe you've just had a baby, Stevie."
"Thank you. We've been well. Shame John couldn't be here though"
"Well, it is but he sends his love and I've got a cardboard cut out of him so he's here somewhere"
Stevie giggles "You kill me. That's got to be the funniest thing"
"The shoot should be underway soon, huh?" Lindsey asks.
"Yep, band's here. They'll be practicing a little then playing live. Got a few things up my sleeve."
"All sounds good"
"I heard you can twirl a baton! You will have to get your hands on one and show us a little something" Mick says, nudging Stevie.
"I know something I'd like her to get her hands on" Lindsey says and Stevie elbows him.
"Knock it off" she says, disgusted and wildly embarrassed.
"Alright, alright. Later?"
"You're going to have to earn it. I'm going to go get my son back from Christine" Stevie says, leaving the boys on their own.
"So how are things? How is it being a dad?" Mick asks.
"It's amazing. I didn't know it would be so fun and rewarding. He's only been here for four months but I feel like I wasn't really living until he was here"
"I felt that way with my girls. It's a miracle."
"I totally understand that now"
"And Stevie seems to be adjusting well."
"She is. She's a great mom and the very best wife. I cannot believe I got so lucky."
"I don't know how you did either" Mick jokes. "I can tell you're a good dad, Lindsey and very devoted. You deserve it"
"Wow, thanks man. That means a lot"
"Look who I have!" Stevie squeals, holding her baby on her hip.
"He looks bigger than you!" Mick teases.
"Real funny, Fleetwood" she says flatly. "You're not that big, are you precious? You're just a healthy, growing boy. You love your milk, don't you Leo?"
"Where's Christine?" Lindsey asked.
"Where the boys are..." Stevie sings, swaying and the men laugh.
"Typical" Lindsey says.
"We've got wine and spirits. Would you like one? I'd grab one before Chris drinks it all"
"If Lindsey wants one, that's fine. I don't think I will"
"Pregnant again so soon, are we?"
"Don't even joke like that, Michael!" Stevie says, pointing a finger at him. "I'm nursing so I don't really think it's a good idea"
"We have a couple bottles made up, Steph. You could have a glass of wine, if you wanted" Lindsey reminds her.
"I guess you're right" she says, looking at him. "I will have one teeny tiny glass of white wine"
"And I think I'll have a beer"
"Coming right up" Mick says, going to grab them their drinks.
"You look so beautiful" Lindsey tells her. She's wearing a floral sundress that's strapless and a floppy hat. Her make up is minimal but perfect and her hair is a little wild and curly.
"Thank you Lindsey" She kisses him briefly but passionately and he wants far more.
"When we get home..."
"Shhh" Stevie says, noticing Mick coming back.
"Here we are" he says, handing Lindsey his beer and Stevie her not so little glass of wine.
"Didn't I say tiny?"
"It's far less than any of us used to drink" he says with a laugh.
"I suppose that's true" she said
"You don't have to finish it. Just wanted you to have a good time"
"I always have a good time" Stevie takes a small sip and throws her head back. "It's been such a long time. It's so good"
"Now, look what you've done. You're going to turn her into Christine"
"Did I hear my name coming out of your mouth, Buckingham?" Christine asked, coming up behind him.
"Mick coerced Stevie into a glass of wine"
"Oh, that's lovely. Cut loose"
"It wasn't actually Mick, it was more Lindsey"
"I see. Lindsey telling lies again" Christine says playfully, shaking her head. "The band's ready and the cameras are around. I think they've been filming a little but weren't sure if you wanted your son in the footage, Stevie. You've kept him pretty private thus far"
"That's fine. He's going to be here. I don't see why not"
"Great. I will let someone know"
"Oh, Linds, will you grab a blanket for him? I would love to put him down on the grass to play. Tummy time, you know?"
"Um, I left it in the car. Let me go grab it"
"Thank you darling"
Lindsey was back in a flash and everyone was giving their little boy lots of attention. He lay on his belly on the grass, playing with a soft toy and trying to put it in his mouth. Stevie sat beside him, in complete awe. How could she and Lindsey have created something to wholesome, so beautiful? He was everything they could have ever dreamed of. He rarely cried, he was happy all the time and so smiley. He was such a joy and everyone adored the boy. Since he had come into this world, he has been a light shining through the darkness.
