Act Natural
Lindsey and Stevie pull up to the studio, a new little sparkling something on a certain finger and she can't stop staring at it.
"Stephanie, listen."
"Listening" she says, pulling her eyes away from her ring.
"I know my little magpie would love to show off her ring but we said we didn't want to make a big deal of it, not yet. Our deadline on this album is coming up and we don't need anything else getting in the way" She nods. "I'm sorry I can't let you be happy just yet but I promise when the album is released, we can have a big, beautiful wedding and invite our friends and family"
"Don't be sorry, Lindsey. This ring is enough and you, you are enough" She places a hand on the side of his face, kissing him passionately.
"I love you" he says.
"I love you too"
"Now, act natural" he says.
"I'm nervous"
"Don't be. I'm right here"
They walk together, purposely not holding hands. Upon entering the studio, they're greeted warmly.
"Back from the dead, I see" Mick says, hugging Lindsey then Stevie. "How are you dear?"
"I'm great. How are you?"
"You know me. Some good, some bad but always with a story to tell" he says with a laugh.
"Don't I know it!"
"Stevie, how are you darling?" Christine asks.
"I'm well. How has it been dealing with the boys on your own?"
"Torture, Steves. I'm so glad you're back"
"Glad to be back"
"So, I guess we'd better start. We can have a reunion later" Lindsey says and winks at Stevie, who blushes.
"Am I fine to write or do you need me?" She asks.
"You can write for now but keep an ear out. I might need to capture more vocals from you"
"Alright." She puts her bag down and takes her usual spot on the sofa.
"Is it me, or is Stevie exceptionally beautiful today?" Mick asks, leaning toward Lindsey.
"Just you" Lindsey says.
"Oh come on. Look at her."
"I have."
"Is something going on with you two? Are you fighting again?"
"No, we're fine."
"Alright then" Mick says, taking a seat at the far end of the room by John.
After some time alone, Stevie gets up to sit by Lindsey as he is adjusting his faders, listening to isolated parts and tweaking them as needed. She places a hand on his shoulder, massaging it a little.
"Would you like coffee, water? I can get something for you"
"Water would be great, babe" he says, smiling his gratitude. She grabs a cup and pulls the lever on the water cooler. She fills his cup and brings it back to him. "Thanks"
"No problem" She puts her head on his shoulder as he continues to work.
"Stevie, come with me to the ladies?"
"Sure, Chris. I've got to powder my nose anyway"
"Hurry back, you're next" Lindsey says.
"I will" She followed Chris to the lavatory.
"So how are things?" Christine asks in a syrupy sweet kind of way.
"F-fine" Stevie stammers. She mentally curses herself, she knows her friend has caught on to them.
"Good." Christine checks her appearance in the mirror and Stevie watches. "Didn't you have to powder your nose or was it code for a little...?"
Stevie laughs awkwardly. "No, none of that" she says.
"Didn't think so. Care to address the elephant in the room?"
"What do you mean?"
"I don't know...maybe the big shiny one on your left hand?"
"Oh that, it's nothing"
"Doesn't look like nothing"
"It was a gift"
"Seems to be a very generous gift" Christine says.
"Yeah. Anyway, we ought to be going back" Stevie says, rushing out of the bathroom.
"Stevie, we're friends aren't we?" Christine asks, jogging after her.
"Of course. Dear friends."
"Then congratulations." The tall blonde pats the petite one's shoulder and walks past a stunned Stevie.
"Ugh he's gonna kill me. I knew I shouldn't have worn this damned ring!" She says to herself. She goes back into the room and all eyes are on her. She drops her gaze to the floor and walks past everyone back to the couch. Lindsey notices a change in her but chooses not to go to her right away.
Things for the album are on track due to the producers' efficiency and Lindsey's help. Everyone breathes a sigh of relief and are finally able to go home in the wee hours of the morning.
"Are you okay?" Lindsey asks Stevie in the car.
"Yeah, I guess you were right, I shouldn't have worn my ring today. Christine was not so subtly interrogating me about it and I froze. I didn't know what to say"
"That's okay"
"It's not okay. You told me to be cool about it and I totally wasn't."
"Don't work yourself up. Let's go home and rest. Tomorrow is a new day"
"I don't want to go home"
"Then what do you want to do?" He asks. He looks at her briefly and sees a familiar look. She's wild eyed, the wheels are turning and he knows it's trouble.
"Let's drive to Vegas tonight! Let's get married, Lindsey"
"We agreed just a couple days ago to wait and have a big wedding"
"I don't care anymore. Let's do it"
"You're nuts, Stevie"
"When did you turn into Mr. Wait-and-see, Mr. Cautious? Where's my wild, adventurous Lindsey?" She asks, kissing his neck and placing a hand dangerously high up in his thigh. "Where is he?"
"What has gotten into you?"
"Come on. Make me your wife."
"How do you do that? I'm wrapped around your little finger!"
"Is that a yes?"
"That's a yes" he says, echoing their conversation from days before. He does a (very illegal) U-turn in the middle of the street and speeds down the highway to their destination. "Next Stop, Las Vegas!" He says. "Can't believe we're doing this!"
"Neither can I. I just can't wait any longer."
"I didn't want to wait either. I was trying to do it for you"
"Don't bother. Where you lead, I follow, remember?"
