Chapter 16 Acts of Encouragement
Jacob and all the vampires were gathered in the foyer in the Cullen residence. They called this meeting because some of the vampires were getting weary about going against the Volturi. Eleazer was amongst one of them. He was the first time to speak.
"When Aro wants someone from a coven, it's never long before evidence turns up prooving that coven committed some crime."
"So he's done this before," Bella stated. She sat on the couch next to Jacob who shared the same expression as her, fear.
"It happens so rarely. I never realized that it's a pattern." Eleazer finished.
Then Carlisle added, "Apparently he aways pardons one person and that person usually has a powerful gift. And are given a place in his coven."
"So that's Alice." Edward realized. "There's no one like her."
"That's why she left." Bella finished.
"So why does he need witnesses?" Emmet asked.
Alister, one of the nomads who mostly kept to himself came forward. "That's simple: to spread the word that the justice system have been served...after he slaughters an entire coven."
The whole room darkened as the vampires realized their fate. They all visibly tensed as death was going to be on their doorstep soon. Nia shared a look of concern with the Cullens. She hadn't spent that much time with them but she already considered the Cullens as her second family. A hand gripped hers in worry, she looked to the left and saw Rosalie who grew scared. Nia remembered Rosalie's past and her wish to spend eternity with Emmet. That dream was now threatened by the Volturi.
Amun from the Egyptian coven was the first who tried to walk out. The other vampires followed in fear that they might die to protect some child they just met. "We're leaving-"
"-and where will you go?" Edward cut him off. "What's to stop them from going after Benjamin,-" He referred to Amun's 'son'"-Or Zafrina, or Kate, or anyone else in the group? They can get anyone they want who has a gift. Their goal isn't punishment, it's power. Carlisle might not ask you to fight but I will for the sake of my family and also yours."
Nia stood up from the couch and nodded, "Yeah, I may be a newborn and may not know a lot about the Volturi but honestly hearing stories about them, it makes me sick. It makes me sick how they use murder and torture as a method to spread fear. I'm done being afraid and you should be too. Because fear is what brings them their power to 'rule' over vampires. For heaven's sake, they've even ruined some of your family. Take a stand against that. Take a stand against these egotistical Vlad the impalers and let them know that you're not afraid." By the time she finished, almost everyone in the room nodded agreeing. "So, will you fight with me not only for my family but for yours as well?" She asked Amun who maintained a poker face. She looked at the other hesitant vampires who avoided her gaze. "Really? Anyone?"
"The pack will fight" Nia gasped in surprise and whipped her head to the person who just entered the room. While she was delivering her speech, she hadn't noticed the pack entering. Paul Lahote stood by the door. He was the one who replied. Jacob stood up in agreement, "we were never afraid of vampires anyway." Seth, Leah, Quil, Embry, Sam, and everyone else in the pack nodded their heads.
The Denali coven also stood up with their leader, Tanya, answering for them "We will fight as well."
Garrett also moved forward, "This won't be the first time I would fight for something that is right," He said referring to his time in the Revolution.
"We will join you." Benjamin proudly announced. Amun protested but Benjamin still stuck to his decision. "I will do the right thing Amun, you will do as you please."
Those who hadn't stood up yet started to follow the trend. Bella, the South American Coven, the Irish Coven-everyone. Nia smiled knowing that they had a fighting chance. She looked at Paul and mouthed a thank you.
