Chapter 92
There comes a point where you no longer care if there's a light at the end of the tunnel or not.
You're just sick of the tunnel.
Yoon Min was completely silent in the police car. They were escorting her to the house. She didn't notice her knees were trembling and her fingers weren't even still for a second. She was looking out through the window and barely listened to what the chief police was informing her.
"A neighbour heard the gunshot when he was out for a walk. Once we received the report, we arrived at the scene and broke into your house. Mr. Kim shot himself with a gun in the bedroom. We decided to info--" He blabbered without caring.
Bullshit.
That's the only word she could think of. Seokjin shot himself with a gun? Just the perfect explanation of nonsense. All of them were fools and idiots. They were creating a big fuss over nothing.
She suddenly clutched the left area of her chest and parted her lips as immense pain doubled through her heart. This was the time she felt her heart hurting the most, and it was unbearable. She didn't know why she was feeling like this. It couldn't be the premonition she was feeling in the morning. Nothing bad happened. Seokjin didn't die. Then why was she being wrecked like this?
"Maam, are you okay?" The chief police noticed her uncomfortable condition.
Nodding her head, she closed her eyes and endured the pain the whole ride. She believed she would be alright once she saw him.
Arriving at their place, she got out from the car and didn't wait a second. She moved forward rapidly to get inside. Many people crowded outside the house, merely curious to find out what happened. As soon as she entered into the house, she saw a lot of police and paramedics brimming in every corner of their place. Avoiding their existence, she raced her way upstairs without looking back once.
The chief police repeatedly told her to slow down as he panted while running after her. But it seemed like she couldn't hear him.
The bedroom was crowded with people mostly. As she appeared in front of them, they recognized her and immediately stopped their individual works. Two cops gestured the others to back away and let her in. As soon as they scrambled away from the centre, her eyes fell on someone and the pairs were locked with him.
She found his lifeless body lying on the floor, blood pooled around his head. With a gun dropped beside his hand.
It took her quite a moment to take everything in. People who were present there just stared at her and waited to see her reaction. As if it was most exciting part of someone's death.
Yoon Min took slow, little steps towards him as she stood right in front of him, staring down at his body emotionlessly. She wasn't crying as a matter of fact. In fact, there weren't any tears brimming in her eyes. Was it because she was too shocked? Her own blood grew cold and white and her heart was put to a torturing pause.
Barely able to gulp the lump down, her lips quivered when she ordered,
"Get up."
Some of the cops and paramedical staff stole glances from each other.
"Get up right now, Kim Seok Jin. This isn't funny."
She was expecting something, a movement at least. But seemed like he was too arrogant. She had to try more.
"Do you think doing this will make me forgive you? Do you really think I'll be fooled by all this?" Her words were suspicious. "Before I take the gun and shoot you myelf, get up from the floor now."
The way she sounded was heartless and stern. The others started to suspect her behaviour.
When he didn't reply, she ordered again, "Yah, Kim Seok Jin. Do you think this is a joke? I said get up."
She tried to ignore the flatness of his chest, not rising or setting at all, she tried to ignore the blood gushing out of his head, she tried to ignore the paleness of his skin. She ignored all the signs of what she was fearing.
"I said get up!" She yelled, startling everyone in the room. Now some of them were starting to get concerned for her.
He wasn't responding. He wasn't even moving any of his fingers. His eyes were closed shut as if they'll never open again. His plump lips were dried as a dead leaf. He looked nothing like he used to, but a dead man.
"Mrs. Kim?" A female cop gently called her though she showed no reaction. "I'm sorry to say this but he is dead."
Yoon Min's heartbeat started to grow weak as she shook her head and mumbled, "N-No. No, no, no, you're wrong."
"He left you a note. You should--"
"Stop talking!" She shouted at the female cop who was only trying to help. "Stop saying he's dead! He is Not dead! I can feel it. He wants to make me feel guilty, okay? I know that."
The female cop sealed her lips, decided not to butt in anymore.
"You're crossing the line by doing this. Get up already! Y-You--" She didn't sound as energetic as she was before. She was breaking down slowly. But in her mind, she was holding onto the thin thread of hope that maybe somehow none of this was true.
A few minutes passed with nothing but pin-drop silence.
"J-Jin?" Her voice was small and uneasy.
The world stopped spinning and came to an end finally. All the quietly swallowed tears began flowing down as her heart couldn't stand strong anymore. Something inside her was screaming the bitter truths she didn't want to hear and would ignrore the rest of her life if it meant to think he was alive. Her heart let out the cries they had been wanting to escape. She let out a shaky gasp as her knees trembled violently and she collapsed to the floor. Crawling towards his body, she started wailing in shock and grief together, molded into a very painful emotion.
A tear dropped on his hand and she grabbed that very same hand and brought it up to her cheek. His skin was so cold, so quiet, so dead. The final truth took her soul out of her body and bashed her against the fire of hell.
Seokjin was gone. He killed himself.
"Oh my God...oh God, no! No, no, no!" She cried and placed his head on her lap, not caring about the blood. "Jin? Jin, please... please don't...Don't do this to me!"
His face was unrecognizable as if death took away his identity, the lovely charms of his face.
"God, please no! No! Please...no! Oh God, please please--" She pleaded to Almighty, gritting her teeth and squeezing his lifeless hand.
"Jin? Jin, love..." She caressed his cheek gently while sobbing softly. "I'm not mad at you. I'm n-not. I forgive you. Okay? It wasn't your fault, I'm sorry. I forgive you s-so just...please open your eyes. Please? It's okay...it wasn't your fault. I'm s-sorry, please open your eyes."
The people around her finally saw what originally happens when a death occurs. The left ones' pleads and beggings sound the worst;if only human had the ability to heal their pain.
She pressed his hand against her cheek harder, no matter how much she desired, the warmth of him was long gone. Her eyes stared into his closed ones, unable to believe they were closed forever. It made her shiver in the painful silence.
"God, please not him! Please not him, please...I can't lose him! Anything but him, please God..."
Her heart was pounding as wet tears streamed down her face uncontrollably.
"Jin, please don't leave me. Please, wake up. Wake up for me, please? J-Jin...I'm so sorry. I'm sorry I said I regret marrying you. I'm sorry I said I hated you. Oh God, I never should've said that. It's all my fault...okay? I don't hate you at all. I'm so sorry for hurting you in the worst way." Bit by bit, she realized her words were like swords and knives against him all this time.
"I'm sorry for all the things I said. I didn't mean them, Jin...Please, honey, don't do this to me. Just open your eyes, okay? P-Please..." Her voice cracked for swallowing grief and pain together constantly.
His eyes never opened, his mouth never opened, and his fingers never moved. Eyes shut closed, his body was cold and still and white, bloodless victim of a tragedy. His skin was soft than cotton, and he didn't even look like he was dead. He still looked so beautiful, like a breathing corpse.
"Jin please wake up. Wake up, honey. P-please...I'm begging you..."
Though he was gone and lifeless, his soul never left him. It was in front of him, crying and begging him to come back to her. She was his soul, his life, his everything.
"I know I behaved horribly with you and I know I shouldn't had been careless. I know I said terrible things to you, things that I didn't even mean. I know I wasn't a good wife. But that doesn't give you the consent to leave! You believed me so easily...I didn't mean to hurt you, Jin.." She sobbed miserably, her heart shattering like a hundred glass.
He wasn't responding no matter what she muttered. He had turn deaf and blind to the living world.
"Please...p-please I can't live without you, you know that. You were supposed to be beside me for eternity, you promised me you would do that." A choked sob left her throat. "Just come back to me. I promise I'll love you harder. I'll never get mad at you again no matter what you do. I promise, Jin...so p-please just wake up..."
The police officers and paramedics were unable to keep watching her. They were failing to hold their emotions on hold, some female already looked away and wiped their tears quickly. The scene was too heartbreaking for them.
"Please please please...I beg you, come back. Open your eyes, love. Look at me and tell me you love me..." She whispered, every second of that desperation stung. If he would only open his eyes for her again.
The death of a loved one is always a curious thing. We all know our time in the world is limited and eventually everyone will end up under white sheets. But it always is a shock when death happens to someone's we know. There is a sickly moment of dark surprise as you try to readjust the way you used to think.
"Jin! Don't leave me! I love you. You know I love you. Please don't go, I forgive you. It wasn't your fault, Jin. Don't leave me!" She screamed at him, a waterfall of tears rolled down her cheeks.
Seokjin never answered her. He didn't even try.
The chief police checked his watch and decided it had been enough time. He gestured two officers quietly, as they made their way towards the wailing wife. The female officer placed her hand over her shoulder and gently told her,
"Maam, he's gone. You need to calm down."
Yoon Min didn't bother replying. She was crying her lungs out and pleading him.
"We have to take him with us now."
"No!" She shouted at the officer. "No, no, no--" She hugged his body inside her embrace, as if she was protecting him. As if she needed to hide him from them.
By the command of the chief police, two officer grabbed her and forcefully pulled her away from him. She screamed and thrashed against them, but her weak strength gave away every time. They distanced her from his body as she continued crying out loud and fought against their strong hold.
The paramedical staff put a stretcher on the floor and placed his body on it.
"No! Where are you taking him? Don't touch him! Don't take him away from me, please!" She was unable to control her madness as she found herself losing.
They took him out of the room and she screamed the worst then. She was crying and screaming her lungs out too much that the officers had to let her go. She fell to her knees and buried her face in her hands. Her heart broke more and more as she could hear his desperate voice whispering with the timeless breeze,
"I can't wake up, Yoon Min..."
Everything was a blur then because of her blinding tears. Her breath got caught in her lungs, her tears stinging, her throat stinging. She couldn't feel an inch of control over her senses. She was losing herself to something; a heart attack or something bigger. She was unable to breathe anymore.
Seokjin died.
Her ribs were caving in and her shrieking cries were slowing down. The world around her crumbled like an earthquake and all the things around her broke into a thousands pieces, all the whispering people around her faded into dust. Everything disappeared like ashes of a raged fire, leaving nothing behind, no trace, no proof, no memory. Shs remembered his face before everything turned black.
