Chapter 87
One sentence. It took only one sentence to completely destroy a person.
God...I can't believe I married you.
Yoon Min never thought she could be hurt as much as she was when she heard him yell that sentence on the phone. She had never been hurt like this before. Maybe it wouldn't had hurt if someone else said them to her. But it was him, her precious husband. The person she never expected to hurt her like this.
Ever since she was born, she wasn't needed or wanted by anyone. She grew up thinking she was a curse, a waste to the world. Her parents abandoned her, Almighty threw her down with a weak heart, her friends looked down at her, even adults abused her. It was hard to be happy. It was hard to go to sleep without nightmares every night. Throughout the years of growing, she knew her place in people's lives and she taught herself to be kind, strong and forgiving in every aspect of the future. That way, life will treat her the same.
But when she met Seokjin, he was the first person to ever want her more than anything else in his life. He needed her to survive, to able to breathe. He was the only one who told her she mattered and he was happy when he was with her. He was her most beautiful dream.
So she didn't mind when he talked to her like that. She was hurt indeed, but she tried forgetting his words as soon as she could. Because she knew he didn't mean them. Even if he did, he would take them back and told her otherwise. She believed in him no matter what.
But again, her heart had to break, this time shatter in small sharp pieces when she heard them fighting in their house. She returned to Seoul this rainy morning and passed by several shops in the street. She bought some fish cakes and tteokbokki for him because she knew the best way to make him happy was food. She took a cab and arrived in front of their house. When she walked to the door, she was surprised to hear him fighting with a familiar voice, a female on top of that. She opened the door but they didn't hear her due to their intense loud argument about something serious.
That's when she heard her say,
I don't understand what's gotten into you. What's so wrong we slept together? Everyone does these days. It doesn't even matter. You don't love me. You still love her, you'll always have her in your heart. So what's so wrong?!
It felt like a thousand bullet pierced through her body. She gasped in shock, a broken sob left her mouth. She felt her heart wrench in undeniable pain and it didn't beat stably. Her legs turned limp, her body turned numb. Blood grew cold, eyes were unable to blink, the need to just cry out loud was there on the tip of her throat. Fear and shock displayed on her white face, as if she felt herself dying that moment.
They continued arguing and she heard them all. She realized what happened between them while she was gone. But her brain could recognize only one thing.
Seokjin broke her faith.
The truth was very painful to accept. In a second, tears appeared in her eyes and she wanted to turn back time. She didn't want to be here and see that. She didn't want to learn her husband slept with another woman behind her back. She wished she arrived a day later or earlier, not today, not this moment. She could feel her chest tightening in response to the shocking betrayal.
She came back home, full with so many dreams and hopes and wishes. The whole time during the return journey, she created scenarios in her head, imagined they would cook something nice together in this rainy atmosphere. Maybe they would go for a walk or cuddle in the couch and watch dramas. Share cute pecks and feel the warmth of one another's body. But everything vanished into thin air the moment she heard them.
Letting out a shaky gasp with her vision blurred with tears, her knees began trembling and they gave up, as gravity pulled her to the ground. The bag she was holding in her hand dropped to the floor carelessly as she stumbled back a step. She saw both of them pausing their argument and hardening their shoulders. She saw Jisoo meeting her eyes and her facial expression changed slowly. And then, she saw him clenching his fists and turning around to look at her with shaky eyes.
His terrified eyes met with hers as they sparked with realization. She couldn't look at him anymore. She felt the disgust and hatred in her stomach growing bigger, and his pitiful eyes sickened her more. She shook her head as tears blurred her vision and uneasiness embraced her soul. She knew that he guessed everything would be over between them.
Her lawfully wedded husband broke the trustworthy bond like a shameless guy.
Unable to stand there anymore, she spun around quickly and ran outside with her luggage. She had to run away, she had to escape. She had to get away from him.
Seokjin shouted her name, "Yoon Min!" He grabbed a shirt out of nowhere, put it on somehow and ran after her, leaving Jisoo like a statue.
As soon as he stepped out of their house, he was drenched by the first splatter of rain. The clouds spat out their beads of water. Puddles began plinking as the rainfall became heavier from the start. Still he didn't care about getting wet and scanned the whole area in search of her.
Luckily, he noticed her walking away in a rush so he ran after her, repeatedly calling her name.
"Yoon Min! Wait, please!"
She didn't stop. He knew she could hear him but she just kept walking.
So much rain was falling that the sound blurred into one long, whirring noise. Seokjin managed to catch up with her and he tried to stop her by grabbing her wrist in a strong hold. But unexpectedly, she pulled her hand out of his grip faster with a grunt. He then pulled her in a tight back-hug. She tried fighting him though she was nothing compared to him in strength.
"Let me go! Don't touch me!" She sobbed in anger.
"Yoon Min, please calm down. Stop--"
"Get your hands off me!" She shouted.
"Please, please let me explain--"
"Explain?" She pushed his body away and looked at him. "Oh do explain to me."
He was startled by her response; however he ran his hand through his wet hair, panting as he run much faster to catch up with her. He could see by the look of her face, how angry and damaged she was. He could lose her any second if he didn't act cleverly.
Without wasting a second, he rambled,
"We were at a bar. I don't know how she got there but I was drunk and sad. I was complaining about how I yelled at you over phone and she was consoling me. We hugged at one point and I remember she kissed me, then one thing led to another and..."
As he trailed off, he realized no matter how cleverly he tried to explain what he did, the result was same. The fact couldn't be changed he ended up having sex with his ex-girlfriend. There was no scope for any explanation. He knew he messed up big time.
Did he really do that to her? Was he so cruel that he forgot their commitment and chose his desires? He sure as hell knew it was completely his fault.
He changed his mind and apologized, "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry I let it happen. It was my fault. I admit it was my fault. I'm sorry, Yoonie. I'm so sorry, please..." His voice cracked painfully as he started crying in front of her.
Yoon Min's eyes were wide open in complete disbelief and her blood boiled, as she began to process everything she just witnessed and heard. Droplets of rain were rolling down her face slowly and teasingly. She stared at him with so much anger in her as her feet grew weak beneath.
It can't be happening. She was so careful about this. She was so certain he felt the same for her, so sure that he was hers. She was so sure that nothing would be able to break what they shared between them and both of them would stay loyal to their marriage forever.
She wanted to reassure herself that she didn't give up her heart in vain. She wanted to think everything was a dream and it was gonna end in a couple of minutes. But can a dream feel so real? Can a dream make you feel the heartbreak so powerfully?
Because it was true. It was really happening. There was no point of denying it.
"I-I don't understand..."
Seokjin looked at her face again. She was biting her lips, shaking violently.
"I can't believe you actually did this. It doesn't feel right, it just doesn't fit. Y-You aren't supposed to do that. You are not a bad person, Jin." She sounded desperate.
His lips quivered as he didn't meet her sorrowful eyes anymore.
"The worst part is you knew...you knew how afraid I was of being hurt...and after all the time and effort you put into building my confidence and trust in you...you just broke it in the worst possible way. I'll never understand why you did that to me of all people in the whole world. After everything I've been through in my life, after everything I've done for you, how can you think of doing this to me?"
The rain fell even more heavily, not caring the slightest that two souls were on the verge of losing each other.
She wiped her cheeks, though tears continued rolling down. "Please tell me this isn't true."
He didn't face her yet, he couldn't. He was ashamed of himself.
"Please tell me something else. You don't have to tell the truth. Just lie to me." She walked towards him and placed her hands over his shoulders, forcing him to look at her straight in the eyes while she was speaking. "P-Please tell me this isn't true."
Seokjin couldn't talk, couldn't give her the answer she wanted. His chest burned as hell, thinking what he had done to her. She will never be able to forgive him, she will never be able to heal the wound. The bloody scar he thrashed on her heart will never fade away. He ruined her life.
"J-Jin, please...just tell me it was a misunderstanding. Just say it!" She cried so miserably that he wanted to kill himself right there. For allowing to let all those tears fall down, for being unable to give her the answer she needed to hear.
His eyes were shut closed as he mumbled again, "I-I'm sorry, Yoon Min. I'm so sorry..." He was crying out as if he was full of anger and fury and shame; his knuckles were bared and his fists were clenched.
"Don't say sorry; say you didn't do it!" It seemed like she only cared for that one thing.
He didn't reply, he couldn't. He just sobbed in front of her, scared of her getting mad at him and losing her. The salty taste of tears and rain morphed into an unique bitter taste.
Yoon Min couldn't feel herself anymore. Her hand went up to her mouth, covering the screaming sobs that were about to breakthrough. Her head was spinning, chest thundering hard, barely any desire to live as his wife, to be loved or love him anymore. She felt pure hatred and she was enraged at him in the worst way. She felt like she could do something incredibly wrong to him but she didn't want to do that. She didn't want to hurt him the way he did.
She wiped her face though it was useless because of the heavy rain. Taking two steps away from him, she grabbed her luggage and started walking away again. She couldn't bear the sight of him right now. It hurt her the most.
But every time she tried walking out his life, he held her hand back always.
"Yoon Min, no!" He grabbed her hand and turned her towards him. "Please don't go. Please, please, please don't walk away."
She ripped her wrist out of his grip and spun around to move. But he pulled her in a backhug again, as she wiggled in his embrace while he whispered in her ears,
"Please...please love. Curse me all you can, hit me all you want, hurt me all you might. Do anything you want to vent your anger on me. But p-please, don't leave me."
She gritted her teeth together, "Let go of me--"
"I'll leave. I'll move out from the house for a while, so please stay here. Please, honey...I beg you. I'm sorry. I'm sorry, don't leave me like this." He wasn't requesting her, he was begging her at this point.
But Yoon Min didn't spare any kindness for him. She had to be cruel and cold, she had to protect herself now. How many times was she gonna let him break her heart? He injured that organ of hers this time so severely that she was scared she won't be able to survive any more heartbreaks.
She couldn't stay.
"Jin." Calling out his name, she told him, "If you feel a tiny amount of sorry for me, then let go of me this instant."
She could feel him being taken aback by her voice.
"I don't want to see you. You are disgusting me."
Seokjin's arms automatically loosened around her in pure surprise. She took the chance and walked forward in a quick speed, not turning around for one time. He wanted to go after her again, but his feet were holding him in place. He realized right now, she needed distance from him. No matter how he tried to apologize, she'll not be satisfied not unless she calmed down first.
But how could he tell her he was truly sorry for what he had done? How could he fix things back? He messed up so uglily.
Tears ran down his face as he whispered her name in the saddest voice and watched her walk away from him in the heavy rainfall.
