Chapter 68
"Hold on a second, it was her? Secretary Song? She did that?" Jisoo fake-exclaimed and looked at him for an explanation.
Seokjin didn't utter a word. Nothing. He just stared at the TV motionlessly, sounds of the living fading away from his ears. Confusion fitting through his mind, the woman's voice kept ringing around him, making it harder for him to think. His breath caught in his throat, his chest heaving as he breathed slowly.
The CEO's secretary...
It could never be her.
"No. It's not Yoon Min. She can never do something like that." Saying, he walked to his desk, standing beside it and looked outside through his spacious glass window.
Jisoo turned off the TV and asked, "Didn't you just hear what she said? She said it was your secreta--"
"I know what she said. And I also know she's lying because I know Yoon Min. She will never do something like this." He didn't face his girlfriend when he said that. His own conscience was tightening inside his soul, reminding him whether what he just said was completely honest.
She licked her bottom lip, thinking of more ways to convince him. "God, Seokjin, I can't believe you right now! Do you seriously trust her that much? She just ruined your company's name."
His stomach plummeted and his body stilled in place. He tried to ignore her harsh words and hold onto his strong belief in his heart.
Receiving his silence, Jisoo realized breaking his trust for her won't be an easy task. She needed to improve her acting, the power of her voice and her deceitful gaze. She prepared herself for this moment so she gave her all for this real-life acting.
She released a sigh and asked him, "Okay, let's say Secretary Song didn't expose the death to the public. Then who did? You got any guesses?"
Seokjin didn't answer. His words were stuck in his mouth, hands clenching together and her questions caught him off-guard. It was true that he couldn't guess the person behind this event and he wanted to find that out since morning. It just didn't make any sense, regarding whoever did this cruel act. But Yoon Min was not even in his list of guesses. In fact, he even thought to partner up with her and catch the guy together who ruined their company.
There was no question of Yoon Min committing such a heinous harm.
"All I know is Yoon Min isn't the one behind this. She has no reason to." He managed to speak up after some time.
"People don't need reasons to hurt others, Seokjin. Some people just find fun by bringing pain and agony in others' life. They do these for attention, you understand me?"
His mind was starting to get messed up by the painful truth and the masked faith. The more Jisoo talked sense in him, the more his heart was losing the trust he had for Yoon Min for years. The world he had created for her and him in his mind, an unseeing shadow began to cover the hope, the light and take over the world.
"You want logic? I'll give you logics then. If you lose your job, it's highly possible for her to take your position, considering how the employees and the other businessmen adore her. Who knows this wasn't her attempt to make you step down, huh?" Jisoo's voice was loud and anger was visible. "Seokjin, come to your senses! Secretary Song was pretenteding to be innocent and good all these time, just to stab you in the back one day. Do you still not see it? Do you still not realize the truth? She wanted your money, your fame, your position and she even did it, see? She successfully managed to put you in this situation where you don't even know if you'll be able to keep your job or not. Once you lose, she can easily be promoted and take everything away from you."
She breathed heavily, "Your blind trust for her is making you dig your own grave. Open your eyes, Seokjin. She betrayed you!"
Seokjin couldn't bring himself to believe the truth no matter how much Jisoo told him, no matter how he tried. The beautiful image of Yoon Min's soft look and smile was projected across his eyes. How could an angel like her do this? It wasn't possible. She respected him, supported him, stood by his side through good and bad times, made him comfortable and happy unknowingly. Why would she hurt him despite everything she did for him?
He didn't know how to react or behave. Sadness and pain flickering in his expression, he slowly felt his world breaking down once his heart was forced to let go of the faith. Pain was being replaced with anger and abhorrent, something he never imagined he would develop these type of negative feelings for her. Emotions he felt whenever his own girlfriend treated him like a nobody, chose something else over him, used him for his money, the deep and strong hatred; he suddenly felt them for Yoon Min.
Jisoo realized she did enough to triger his ferocity so she smirked silently. She walked to him, stood behind him and put her hand over his shoulder. Taking a small glance at him, she was satisfied with how he looked, angry and provoked. She knew her words made an effect on him, her excellent sense of acting won against his long-built feelings for his secretary. She was proud of her cruel self.
"That's why I never trusted her, baby. She is an orphan. She was born to be a burden. She never belonged here. See, no wonder why her parents left her." The way she whispered those brainwashing words beside his ear, people would think she was putting a spell on him. And somehow, he was completely believing his girlfriend now.
"I assume you didn't give her a bonus like you gave the ones who knew about the death?" She looked at his face which clearly gave the answer. She again gasped softly but it was all fake. "Just because she's loyal and trustworthy, doesn't mean you won't pay her for a secret like that. It's the honest ones we should always look out for, because we never know when they turn dishonest."
Seokjin by now was fully coaxed by his girlfriend. His wounded heart was under control of negative emotions, as a result; no matter how he tried, he was starting to get mad at Yoon Min and forget about what he had for her all these years. By now, he was convinced he shouldn't had trusted and treasured her so much, that she would take advantage of his kindness and betray him. He shouldn't had believed her more than anything, because the way she hurt him, the pain and anger weren't temporary.
She broke his trust.
Just then, Yoon Min knocked on the door, completely unaware of everything happening inside his office. She entered inside and in a hurry, she spoke up,
"Sir, another bunch of reporters are camping outside. What should we do?"
Jisoo was the one who turned around and acknowledged her presence. But not Seokjin. His back was still facing her, his heart clenched upon hearing her voice.
Yoon Min didn't take long to figure out the cold, deadly, heavy tension in the room so she eyed Jisoo's expression first to get an idea of everything. She was smirking? Great, now what lie she told him about her?
"I-Is something wrong?" she stupidly asked.
Jisoo walked forward, her heels clicking on the ground sharply. She stood before Yoon Min with her infamous smirk, arms crossed over her chest. Looking down at her, she out of nowhere gave a tight slap on her face, the sound of the skin slapping.
Hearing the sound, Seokjin turned around automatically, a small part of his heart wanted to stop her. But he just didn't.
Yoon Min on the other hand placed her hand on her cheek where she was just slapped. It felt like burning hot. Eyes widening in pure shock and confusion, she looked back at Jisoo with a question look, heart demanding to know what she did wrong to deserve a slap.
She got her answer when Jisoo coldly spat, "You ungrateful bitch, this is what you do after everything my boyfriend has done for you?!"
Confusions kept growing, she changed her focus to Seokjin now who was standing behind with an unreadable expression. As much as it hurt he wasn't doing anything regarding the slap, she was more curious to know what was his girlfriend talking about.
"They say it's you. It was you who disclosed everything to the reporters. We learned how you wanted to act like a hero and send a woman on your behalf." Jisoo did the pleasure by turning the TV on again and another news channel talked about the latest news they received.
Yoon Min couldn't understand what they were talking about. It was almost as if they were talking about another girl. She had no idea what was going on because clearly, she was being framed.
Equally being shocked as him, she parted her lips to let out a shaky breath,
"I-It wasn't m-me..."
She looked at Jisoo, "I-I don't know about it! It's not me. What the heck is going on?! W-why are they saying it was the CEO's secretary? I didn't do or say anything. They're lying."
"Oh, you stop lying, Secretary Song. Why would a random woman point out to you and speak such a thing?" Jisoo attacked her skillfully.
"I don't even know her!" Yoon Min was loud this time. Her heart increased its pace suddenly by the inescapable trap fallen on her.
Arguing with Jisoo wasn't the main point so she walked to Seokjin and stood before him, "CEO Kim, I didn't do it. I don't know why they are doing this but I'm telling you I've no part in this." Poor her didn't know he wasn't the same man she knew as she thought he believed in her.
Seokjin didn't say anything. He didn't even clearly look at her. It felt like he badly wanted to look away from her seemingly honest eyes. He knew her eyes were lying to him directly. The same eyes he always found a light of home.
"You believe me, don't you?" Yoon Min asked when she felt a change in his eyes.
Jisoo feared if Seokjin would change his mind all on a sudden. So far everything she planned worked out right but she was aware the final decision had to be taken by him. She did her best to brainwash him as much as possible and if she butt in now, she will be suspected sooner or later.
So the last thing she wanted was his heart to go soft on that orphan again.
But he did like she wished.
"H-How could you do that, Yoon Min?"
She was taken aback by the question. She furrowed her eyebrows, wrinkles appeared in her forehead as confusion lingered on her face.
"W-what?" She asked flatly, trying to keep her voice low.
"You were the one who wanted to investigate...you kept telling me to investigate about the suicide..." His soft yet cold voice gavw shivers down her spine.
Yoon Min didn't expect this out of everything. She thought he would always trust her like he always did, but seeing him talking like that made her convince he was badly hurt by a misunderstanding. And she needed to fix it.
So she became desperate now. "Yes, I admit I did. But I never told anyone about it. I-I...why would I do it, Sir? I didn't do it. I swear I didn't!"
And again, he was silent but his eyes were showing he already was done trusting her.
Yoon Min was extremely surprised by how he changed suddenly. He never doubted her, never. What made him this cold-hearted towards her?
"Sir...I swear on you that I have no idea about this! I would never think about going against your back and disobey you. I would never put our company in danger. I would never...I-I...why won't you believe me?" Her eyes stung and filled with tears, seeing the unknown stare he had in her eyes.
Seokjin was an emotionless human now who couldn't see her tears and the truth in her heart. He was blinded and bound by Jisoo's coaxing that he forgot his own feelings and decided to take things on another level.
"I-I never thought you would stoop this low, Secretary Song. After all I did for you; I gave you a shelter, a job...I gave you freedom and I gave you care and affection. Is this how you repay me?"
Yoon Min couldn't recognize the man in front of her. He wasn't her Seokjin for sure. Her lips trembled in fear as well her eyes threatening to spill sorrowful tears.
"What did you want from me? You wanted my money, my fame, didn't you? You wanted to kick me out from my chair and sit just like that? This is what you wanted?!" Seokjin roared at her which made her flinch back.
She just stared at him in wonder, her insides crumbling by his behaviour.
"How could you? I trusted you! I trusted you more than anyone else in this goddamn world. How could you betray my trust like this!?" His eyes were shooting daggers and flame. "You're the most despicable person I've ever seen." His voice cracked with misery.
His words were like a tight slap to the face. And she was frozen and scared to explain how wrong he was. Her lips parted, pain glimmering in her eyes, wanting to tell him she never wanted to hurt him.
Seokjin's hand went through his hair, "Oh God, I never should've taken you. I never should've taken pity on you. Oh, I never should've taken that decision to take you with me. That was the most stupid decision I ever took!" He didn't know what he was saying. His voice sounded strangled and forced out. "Oh my God, I regret so much now for pitying you. I regret for thinking you to be a good person because my choice back then has pushed me in this mess today!"
Yoon Min couldn't believe or understand how those vicious, agonized words were spewing out from his mouth as if he kept them bottled up for a long time. As if these were his true feelings about her. Before long, tears streamed down as she felt her heart stopping on its own.
"Y-you don't mean it..." It wasn't something she wanted to hear from him, rather she whispered those words for herself, to hold herself from breaking down, to stop those tears from falling. She bit her lip to muffle the whimper but it slipped out anyway.
"Oh, you bet I mean it. I mean it more than anything now. That you are a regret of my life! You easily used me, took advantage of me and shattered this golden relationship of ours. You had to betray me for your own sake!"
She lowered her head and lost the hope to explain, to solve the misunderstanding. For she heard what he felt for her truly, dreadful hatred instead of love. Pain flashed across her face as the lump in her throat grew. She knew it was too late. Too late to earn his trust again which was broken by nothing but a false understating.
"Get out of here." Seokjin muttered softly and looked away from her eyes, his heart letting go of a different kind of beating to remind him he was wrong.
Yoon Min's teary eyes widened at that. Her lips trembled as a shaky breath escaped, eyes fluttering shut to try stop the tears that tickle down at the stabbing pain he gave her. Throat feeling raw and wet, as if she's been sobbing and pleading, her heart shrunk in fear of everything.
"W-what?" She let out in a whisper.
He didn't want to repeat his words. He never thought he would ever say those words to her, it hurt him like hell to utter them. But he didn't know how he ended up saying those words, they were forced and unstoppable once he started.
Shaking her head lightly as she parted her lips, pain glimmering in her eyes, "But I-I didn't--"
"God, get out of here before I do the pleasure of kicking you out." Jisoo spoke after a long time, rolling her eyes and walking towards her boyfriend to show her she had no place between them.
Yoon Min tried ignoring the actress and still begged him, "S-Sir? Please don't do this to me. I really didn't do anything..." Silence was all she received from him, nothing else. It shattered her poor heart into million pieces, acknowledging the man in front of her, the one she loved so much, acting like a total stranger. She hated how tears spilled and rolled down her cheeks again and again, making herself look like a weak, emotional person.
She ducked her head, hand swiping the tears quickly, sniffling as she lifted her head but got mad at herself when tears kept falling. How could she stop her heart when it's been stabbed and wounded and it wanted to just cry? Her voice was hushed when she asked very softly,
"W-where will I go?"
Seokjin's eyes shivered at her broken, soft whisper; wanting to slap himself for being too cruel and harsh on her. A hushed question that had sent the wrong tingles and shivers to scrim across his spine. Where would she go?
"I-I have no one else without you..." She let out in pure fear for the future, like a child who lost her parents and doesn't have anyone to take her in.
A crack appeared in Jisoo's laugh, as she finally took the step to stand between her and Seokjin, making the other step back hesitantly a few steps behind, still staring at him for one answer. She didn't want him to change his mind at her pleadings so she took cover instead,
"You shameless wench, how can you still stand here and beg? Get out, Song. You're fired! And fired means out from this job and from our lives. You get me? Don't you ever come back here. Take your things and leave this instant." She protectively squeezed her hand under his shoulders, gesturing him to say a few words too.
Seokjin took a hold of himself and met Yoon Min's tearful eyes before saying, "J-Just...get out." Unable to say anything more, he turned around, back facing her as he focused on numbing his own heart and control his tears first.
When Yoon Min only could take a single glance of his face, she saw his eyes pooled with guilt and regret. She saw how he was holding himself from breaking down and take back his words. How his beautiful eyes were blurry with unquestionable tears. If he wasn't speaking his heart right now, then what was he doing?
Why was he breaking his promise?
She didn't break the trust between them. He just did.
Yoon Min's always been strong in difficult times. That's because she believed she had someone who would take her hand and stand by her side even when she wouldn't deserve it. Someone who would trust her undoubtedly and support her more than anyone. However, when that very person decided to turn his back for no reason, she was left on her own, to deal with her grief and pain. The dam had come crashing down then as her heart was no longer protected by the invisible embrace of Seokjin.
So she didn't say anything further. She knew she lost her place in his life and there was nothing she could do about it. A tiny sad smile crept up at the corners of her lips, thousands of memories rushing through her mind to remind her of the Seokjin she knew so well. And she turned around and walked. Walked slowly to the door and grabbed the handle.
She waited for him to stop her, to turn around and take back his words. But he stayed there and did nothing.
So Yoon Min let her tears stream down and walked out of his office, closing the door in an echoing depressing sound.
When the sound of the door closing was heard, Seokjin's eyes squinted shut and tears rolled down in pure regret for whatever he did in the past few minutes.
He attacked her with the very hurtful amount of pain that he wanted to keep her from.
