Chapter 51

If Yoon Min was asked about a day she disliked the most, it was today.

Her boss's anniversary with his girlfriend.

Why? She didn’t know. She didn’t know the melancholy in her heart every year this particular day arrived. She wasn’t jealous or resentful. She never could describe the feeling in her soul. She convinced herself throughout the years that it was only a silly part of her heart that wanted Seokjin to spend a minute with her on this day. In a special way.

But she was considerate and conscious about everything. So she let go of the bitter feelings and acted fine in front of him.

“No, no, not that! Wear that navy blue shirt.” even in her deep, unhappy thoughts, Yoon Min didn’t miss his poor choice of picking a shirt colour.

Seokjin dropped the one he was holding and took the one she suggested. He turned towards the mirror and placed the shirt over his chest.

His bed was currently filled with tons of outfits of various categories as he was terrible when it came to dressing up for his dates. Jisoo liked men who dressed perfectly for the right occasion. So in order to impress her more and more, he tried wearing clothes that would catch her heart the moment she saw him. Since his sensible secretary always helped him out in every situation, she also prepared him for his dates every time.

Yoon Min added while he was checking himself out in the mirror, “And do tuck your shirt inside.”

He nodded and turned around, only to have his face grimacing at the sight of his messy bed; shirts, suits, pants, ties were scattered around.

“I'll clean them up, don't worry.” Yoon Min flashed him a wide smile.

Seokjin gave her a thanks before getting inside the bathroom to change.

After some time, he came out from the bathroom, wearing brand new clothes and looking marvellous as always.

He pulled the sleeves a little higher above his wrist as he called her who was putting his clothes back inside his wardrobe, “Hey, how do I look?”

Yoon Min looked at him and gave a thumbs-up.

“I need words, kid.”

“What do you want me to say? You always look perfect.” she stated blankly.

Seokjin found her answer to be perfect and smiled contently  before turning towards the mirror and fixing his collers.

He heard her asking curiously, “Why don't you wear glasses today?”

Clearing his throat, he replied, keeping it short, “Jisoo doesn’t like that. She says I look like some stupid nerd.”

Yoon Min was finished putting his clothes back. She looked at his back, crossing her arms over her chest and commenting, “I don't think so. You look extra-handsome when you wear glasses.”

“Thanks for the compliment, Secretary Song. But I must think of my short-tempered girlfriend before myself.”

She scoffed at his reply but didn’t say anything further.

“I'm not sure when I'll be back. So don't stay up late, thinking about my handsome face.” Seokjin liked to tease her in every chance. They were walking to his car in the garage.

As expected, Yoon Min rebelled in anger, “I don't stay up late, thinking about your handsome face, Sir! I spend a nice, quality time with my babies (she called movies and dramas her babies).”

He chuckled at her reaction, “Anyways, be it your babies or my handsome face; I don't want you to stay up late at night. That's a really bad habit.”

“Can't help it if I have 103+ dramas and 345+ movies left to watch.” she replied flatly.

They reached his car sooner than she thought. She handed the keys to him and opened the door for him. Seokjin was going to get inside but he stopped midway and stood in front of her, facing her; the car door being the only thing between them.

“Should I do something special tonight?” he asked.

Yoon Min blinked, “Well, you can buy something for her dog?”

“Why will I buy something for Dalgom instead of her?”

“He's practically her son, which makes it your son. So showing care for her pet can make her heart melt, right?” Yoon Min always answered theoretically.

Seokjin nodded his head. A dog bowl sounded good.

“And give her anything purplish. It's her favorite color.”

“What should I--”

“Sir, stop asking me everything and do something for her from your heart.” Yoon Min raised her voice, almost as whining. “She's your girlfriend, do something your heart thinks best for her.”

Seokjin chuckled sadly and murmured, “That's the problem. My heart doesn’t seem to know what's best for her.”

Being taken aback by his unexpected words, she stared into his eyes and remained silent. Though she wasn’t sure if she should ask him the reason, she thought to ignore as of now. Because whatever he might say won't change his neverending love for his girlfriend.

Although Jisoo was surely hard to love and cherish, she was also no doubt in love with Seokjin. Yoon Min had seen it in her eyes. She loved him possessively and it wondered her a few times, if she herself could ever love someone like her.

Both of them were perfect for each other.

Shaking her thoughts off, she looked at him again, “Just give her a locket with a special meaning.”

Seokjin's eyes lit up in joy as he exclaimed delightedly, “Whoa, sounds perfect. Thanks!”

As he was sitting inside his car, Yoon Min thought if she should take a chance to ask him this year. She never got the slightest courage to tell him. Seokjin would always spend the whole day with Jisoo, so it gave her no opportunity to be a part of this day with him.

To Seokjin, it was just his anniversary.

But what if he agreed? He could, right?

“Well, I'll be off then.” Seokjin was closing the car door.

“No, Sir. Wait--”

He didn’t close the door and stared at her in confusion.

Yoon Min sighed and her fingers played with each other.

“C-can I ask you something?”

Seokjin's facial expression was the same. He nodded which urged her to continue.

“I just wanted to ask if you can spare me some time today.” she tried to sound polite. “Just 5-10 minutes, that's all I ask.”

Seokjin didn’t expect a request like this. “Why?”

Yoon Min hoped he wouldn’t mind her words. “Ah, as you know, you took great care of me all these years. And I never found the chance to show my gratitude. So I just wanted to treat you tonight.”

“After all, it's sort of our friendship anniversary too.” she giggled nervously to make her statement look minor.

Seokjin didn’t answer straightaway. Which kind of hurt her slightly that he wasn’t completely interested to be with her. If he was, he would've given an answer already.

She was examining his face closely, and it appeared as if he was thinking about her request sharply. He wanted to agree with her but he wasn’t sure if he would find the time.

And he didn’t want to give her false hope.

Yoon Min understood his situation and wanted to take back her words. But he looked at her eyes again and replied,

“Fine. Just 5 minutes. Don't blame me if I can't make it.”

Her lips curved a wide smile as she nodded her head happily.

“Can I go now?” Seokjin asked with a playful smile.

She nodded again and closed the car door with force. Waving goodbye, he started the car and soon enough, he drove away from her sight.

Yoon Min really hoped for him to make it.

--------------

She shouldn’t had hoped too much.

It was currently 11:55 p.m. late at night and there was still no sign of him. Seokjin was still with Jisoo of course.

Sighing, Yoon Min glanced at the letter she had in her hands as she was flipping it over and over to pass the time. She didn’t plan much, just wrote a warm letter and prepared a gift for him. She noticed his game console broke a few days ago, he was obsessed with playing games in his free time time so it broke eventually. So she bought a game console with the latest design for him as a small gift.

She thought to personally hand these over but seemed like, he simply forgot their deal or wasn’t able to find time. Yet again, he didn’t give her his word so she couldn’t call it a promise.

Glancing at the clock then, the time crossed 12:01 a.m. just now.

Yoon Min smiled faintly in sorrow although she tried not to care about it too much. It wasn’t his fault anyway. Basically, she was asking too much by requesting Seokjin to spare her a few minutes on his anniversary night. He usually slept with Jisoo on these days so she guessed, he forgot or couldn’t come unfortunately.

Sighing again, she decided to shake things off and proceed to her plan B. She walked out of her flat and took the elevator to the upper floor. After reaching his doorstep, she placed the wrapped box and the letter in front of it. As if he came back in the morning, he could see it and take it inside with him.

Yoon Min came back to her flat and went straight to sleep without watching TV. It was unusual of her, to ignore her dramas. She just didn’t feel right. She felt more dull and disappointed than she thought. Maybe because this time, she really hoped to spend some time with him.

It wasn’t the first time Seokjin didn’t keep his word. She remembered the day she wanted to visit the children at the orphanage and asked for a day's leave. He volunteered to accompany her but at the end, he couldn’t make it. When it was her first time going on a business tour with him in Australia, he told her he would be with her all the time, but she was on her own most of the time, scared. Also every year on her birthday, Seokjin unexpectedly wished her the first; but never cared to spend the day with her as a friend. She remembered all those times Jisoo insulted her and rebuked her for no reasons, he never spoke up to defend her; maybe said a few words to calm his girlfriend down, instead he would apologize for her behaviour when Jisoo wasn’t around.

Calculating everything, both good and bad together, it was certain that Yoon Min was on Seokjin's top priority list. But maybe after Jisoo and himself. Or maybe more behind.

Because he cared for a lot, but at the same time, he didn’t care for her enough.

Yoon Min never figured out what exactly she felt for him. The feeling was something strong and deep, something so powerful that always made her forgive him and admire him. But she knew Seokjin didn’t see her a tiny amount of the way she saw him.

His heart belonged to his girlfriend.

And she could do nothing about it.
