Chapter Thirteen - A Distance
October 5th
My Dearest Abigail,
Though I must confess to some trepidation and my
first foray into the house of commons,
I am resolved to begin what I came here to do...
October 20th
My dearest Ross,
Today we ploughed the long filed and brought in the last of the apples, much to the excitement of the children. All of them miss you dearly and Henry asked me to attach his own letter of correspondence. I am please to tell you that the time spent watching you and learning about the lands and mine under the Poldark name has made an easy transition for me taking over.....
January 27th
My dearest Ross.
Christmas is already behind us, yet the harsh winter persists and all of us at home, and at the mine, eagerly await your return. I am to pass on the thanks of our children for the gifts you have sent them. As well as a request. Henry is now old enough to question if and when he will go to school like his cousin. He so wishes to further his education beyond what I know and your advice would be much welcomed. From discussions with Dwight, My Uncle John, Mr Fraser and even Geoffrey Charles, he is favouring Harrow or Eton....
March 3rd.
My Dearest Abigail,
The contentious anti slavery debate rages on, keeping me here to add my support. In my continued absence I know I can rely on you to manage affairs at home a little longer.
I read over the latest letter from Ross, about his time in London and reasons as to his lack of return. Eve sat in my lap while the others were talking to Mr Harrison one of the fishers. Drake and Demelza joined me as Rosina went past.
"Good day Rosina." i greet
"Good Day Mistress, Demelza. Good Day Master Drake." she gave the doe eyes to my friend. I glance up at him with a coy smile. He chuckled
"What did Cap'n Ross say in his letter?" Drake wondered
"The same as usual. He misses us very much and will return as soon as he can." I stood and raise Eve to rest on my hip. I join the others.
"Come on then it's nearly time for supper." I call them, the stand as Demelza joins us taking the hands of Isaac and Emily where as Henry and Rebekah Grace hold hands. We make our way back to Nampara.

I had taken to dressing in something more easier to navigate working at the mine. I was there often and figure that if I was to truly know what went on I would have to go down. Being in a dress wouldn't cut it. Now I wore pants, shirt and boots. Admittedly it shocked them at first but now have grown used to my altered dress appearance.
I was greeted and greeted in return as I approached the mine. Dwight was already there attending to patients as were Tholly and Mrs Crocker who has taken a liking to the rouge man.
"Tholly, Mrs Crocker." I smile, they nodded their head to me
"Come on, then, my handsome looking lass." he chuckled leaving with her. I had to laugh now at his antics before turning my attention to Dwight.
"Dr Enys, you've escaped!" I joked jogging up the steps and lifting myself to sit on the bannister "With Mrs Enys so near her time?"
"She's still refusing to rest." he told me "...and proceeding as if nothing is happening and nothing will change." I laughed as caught sight of Zacky I jumped down "Well Captain anything to report?" I inquired
"There is ma'am. Nothing good." Zacky replied. My smile dropped and we went inside the office. I laid out the plans as he and Sam explained to me what was wrong.
"The champion lode's wearing unexpected thin." Zacky explained pointing to the map.
"It looked safe for nigh on five or more years, but now, if it peter out as we think it will..." Sam trailed off.
"We might have to close within months." I folded my arms thinking about it. I could learn as much as the next person but this needed someone who lived and breathed the mine.
"I think it's time to write to Ross." Zack and Sam didn't like that suggestion and with fair reason. Most of the people had begun to feel abandoned by him its was slowly turning into resentment. Zacky moved around to stand next to Sam.
"But what can he do? And at such a distance?" Sam wondered
"With greater matters than we to busy himself." Zack added
"There is only so much I know or have learnt. If I make a wrong move on this, then it could mean job losses for going on hundreds of families. It's not worth the risk, so I will write to him, maybe try the emotional blackmail at the same time." They weren't happy wth it but accepted my decision . I went down to see the problem as a better way then returned home to write to Ross.
