Chapter Eleven - Trauma
--3rd Person---
Abigail's eyes rolled back and she started convulsing. Ross didn't know what to do, neither did Prudie. Nothing like this had happened before.
"What's happening?" he asked
"Maid never done that before. She scream, she shout, she nearly break Ole prudie hand, but she never done that."
Meanwhile at Killewarren Demelza busted through the doors out of breath.
"Dr Enys, sir. It's Mistress. She needs you quickly." Dr Enys shared a quick look with his wife before he jumped out of his chair and grabbed his bag. The two raced back to Nampara. It was luck for them that Killewarren was one of the neighbours to Nampara. On their arrival Dwight ran upstairs while Demelza took care of the frightened children.
"What happened?" he questioned but stopped mid step seeing the woman convulsing "How long has she been like this?"
"No longer than five minutes." Dwight took her side and opened her eyes
"She's not responding?." Prudie moved out of the way. "I need to check on the child. Clear the room but send Demelza in." Ross didn't move
" Ross the best thing you can do for Abigail is to reassure your children." Ross nodded hollowly as he was taken out by Prudie. Demelza entered, just as Abigail stopped and went motionless.
"What can I do?"
"She's raging a fever, cool water ." she nodded and he checked on the baby.
"They're crowning. And you can't push." he mumbled "Demelza hurry up." he wiped his hands and dug through his bag. She came back in with a bowl.
"I have something that will startle her awake, she'll be confused. Be calm as you keep her cool. i need her to push.
"Isn't there another way?" Demelza asks
"Not without risk of life. I refuse to lose someone else today" he broke something in front of her nose and she shot up.
"What..?"
"Abi...it's me, calm down." Demelza soothed damping her forehead "Your in labour and you need to push."
"Push?" she asked confused
"Push." Dwight encouraged so she did. she pushed, hard. Dwight helped guide the baby out "Again. Almost there." he heaved out ever strength she had.
"There!" he pulled the child out and onto the lining besides him cleaning up and Abigail went limp once more after the traumatic birth.
"Dr Enys, she's out again." Demelza stated. Dwight looked up at the out cold Abigail.
"Here" he handed the baby off and checked on the mother. "She still has a pulse. Her eyes look fine. It's exhaustion." He took the baby back
"Stay here while i go explain to Ross." Demelza nodded. Dwight carried the little bundle downstairs and into the parlour where everyone was waiting. Ross was surrounded by his five other children.
"Say hello to your new baby girl." Dwight smiled softly. Ross stood up and quietly stepped over and he was handed daughter.
"How is Abigail?" was his first question.
"It was a difficult birth, she had already begun to push when she..." he trailed off being the frightened children. "She's exhausted, and resting. I will send a note to Caroline and stay the night to keep an eye on her."
-Two Weeks Later-
Ross had sent a note ahead of time that he would be late in his arrival. Abigail had recovered enough to wait at the cross roads with him and the children for the coach to arrive. From afar Ross saw the carriage approaching. He knelt down in from of his little ones.
"Be good, while I'm away." he told them kissing there heads and stopped at Henry
"And you...look after your mother"
"I promise." Henry nodded. Ross kissed his head and stood stepping back to Abigail.
"Little Eve Poldark. I have barely begun to know you, but when I return, I promise to make it up to you." he kissed her two week old head the last was Abigail. No words were exchanged. he pulled her into a kiss which she happily returned as the carriage pulled up. He pulled away and grabbed his luggage handing it over and boarding the carriage. Abigail watches as the carriage rides off into the distance.
"Come on let's go home." she says. The children stand and walk in front of their mother holding hands.
