Chapter 13: The Perfect Name
The TV played Hanji's favorite crime shows as Hanji was curled up on the couch with a tub of chocolate ice cream in her hands. As the weeks passed, I listened to her complain about her feet hurting and how our daughter was a strong kicker. I saw one of those kicks or punches, and it opened my mind about how strong a woman's body is. Hanji was the toughest woman I had ever known, and soon, I'll know another tough woman to match Hanji's wits and strength.
"How about... Jasmine? That's a type of tea, isn't it? It'll go nicely with your future tea shop, Levi."
"Jasmine? It's a beautiful name, but I can't imagine naming our daughter after tea. I'm sure there are other sources for that name, but I only think of the tea. I love it, but I don't think it matches our daughter. At least... for now."
Hanji kept throwing names at me, and I felt proud that we were able to collect so many potential names. From some coworkers of mine, they had difficulty naming their daughters due to their wives always picking names of their ex-girlfriends. Even when it was a beautiful name, once that name was mentioned, the only thing that popped into their heads were their exes. Hanji and I had a free range of names to pick and choose from. But that's the problem, isn't it? It's too much. I'm pushed to the limit of names. I don't want my daughter's name to be something boring, but it can't be too extravagant.
But each passing day, we didn't have a name for our daughter and our worries grew. We heard of stories from new parents that their child was nameless for a few days, but we didn't want to be those parents.
Every day, we searched for signs, even if it was useless. We researched every name, making sure it didn't have an unwanted meaning. I heard that a parent wanted to name their child after something, but it turns out it was a medicine name for some disease. Must names be this difficult to find?
Before we knew it, Hanji began to cry with pain. Our daughter was coming home.
