Chapter 43- Let it be (Part 2)
Shawn point of view
"NATHALIE! TALK TO ME RIGHT NOW! TELL ME WHAT'S GOING ON!", I screamed in the phone while I quickly put on my shoes, grabbed a coat and my car keys. I sprinted down the stairs.
"He's shooting people in their cars. I don't have bullet proof glass in my car Shawn.", she cried quietly and I hurried up, barging through the door to the underground carpark and sprinting to my car.
"Well, should've accepted the Audi I bought you last year for christmas.", I said and heard her slightly chuckle.
"Is he anywhere near you?"
"I don't know. I'm lying down onto the passenger seat so he won't see me"
"Smart, don't look. Stay down. Don't be a hero.", I sped out of the garage and onto the highway, tracking Nathalie through her phone. My heart was racing fast with fear, fear of being too late.
"Shawn, I think he saw me.", she suddenly cried out, starting to sob.
"I'm almost there! Hang on. I can see the police! They're here! Don't worry!", I said as calm as possible, even though my thoughts were running wild. I parked my car on the sidewalk and jumped out, sprinting towards the police lights.
"Shawn! I love you so much!", she said quietly, when suddenly there was a lot of noise from her side. Low thumps were audible, as well as her heavy breathing.
"Hold on! I'm almost there!", I screamed, when suddenly I heard a loud bang and the line went silent.
I froze in my moves, my heart racing, being close to tears. I heard the echo of the shot surrounding me, followed by another one. I quickly pulled myself together and started sprinting again, getting closer and closer to the spot I tracked her to.
When I finally arrived I saw ambulances. A lot of them. Panicking, I searched every car, every body, when suddenly I saw her, lying on a stretcher, blood everywhere.
"Oh my god!", I stumbled towards her, past the paramedics, grabbing her face.
"Hey! You have to leave right now!"
"I know her! What happened? She was calling me when suddenly it just...", I felt tears running down my cheeks, when I looked at her again. They rolled her away towards the ambulance and I ran with them.
There was blood pouring out of her chest and her stomach. A breathing device was pressed over her face, her eyes were closed, and there were drops of blood over her face. She looked like she was sleeping- god, how much I hoped that she was just sleeping. The paramedics were trying hard to stop the bleeding. But when we reached the ambulence I was pushed back: "Please let me come with. I can't leave her alone!"
"I'm sorry. If you're not family you can't come with."
"She's my wife! Please! I can't leave her alone! I can't!", I only whispered, tears still streaming down my face.
He sighed, but then nodded, helping me into the ambulance and slamming the doors shut behind me.
-
"We got an emergency here! Hurry up!", The paramedics said as they ran down the corridor and I followed. I didn't care that the people we ran by were staring at me, whispering, reognizing me. I only cared for Nathalie.
On our drive here her heart gave out twice. They had to push me away so many times, I feared I might have made things worse.
"You can't go in there, sir.", a security guard held me back, but I pushed forward.
"You don't get it! I can't leave her alone. Not again! I need to stay with her! She needs me!", I screamed, while two more security guards joined in holding me back.
"She needs you to calm down Shawn!", I suddenly heard a familiar voice behind me and turned around. Chiara stood there, her eye makeup smeared, her hair messy, her eyes red from crying. Next to her, her boyfriend.
"What are you doing here?", I said weakly and stopped fighting the security guards, who now slowly let go of me.
"I was already here when I heard what happened. I'm so sorry Shawn.", she cried and I walked towards her and hugged her tight, starting to cry again.
"I never should've left her alone. I never should've let her drive home by herself.", I whispered, but Chiara stopped me: "None of this is your fault. You are the reason she's happy. You gave her everything after she lost her future and helped her out of an abusive relationship. So stop blaming yourself for her bad situation when you're the only reason she is happy in the first place."
5 hours later
"Mr. Mendes?", A doctor shook me of my not-really sleep and I quickly sat up, stretching my aching back.
"We have good news and bad news.", the doctor said emotionless. I quickly grabbed Chiaras hand and she squeezed it tight.
"She's alive, but one bullet almost hit her heart. She was lucky that she had this in her pocket.", he held up a bag with a small piece of jewellery in it. I knew immediately that it was for me.
As I grabbed the bag I saw that it was a skinny silver necklace with a guitar pick pendant, the shape of a guitar engraved in it. At least it had been one once. Now it was deformed, like it diverted a bullet.
"If it hadn't been in the breast pocket of her jacket she would have been dead."
"What is the bad news then?", Chiara said annoyed but I ignored her mood. I was numb inside, because I knew that I wouldn't like the bad news- at all.
"Unfortunately her injuries were too severe for a normal proceidure. The bullets she was shot with were loaded with germes and bacteria. The dirty blood didn't exit the body like it usually does ecause it hit a vein, pumping the blood to her heart and all through her body.
It reached her brain really fast and the only thing we could do was put her in a coma while cleaning her blood to not interrupt the healing process at the same time. I'm really sorry. We don't know yet how long it's gonna take. Her body is pretty beat up. But we'll do everything in our power to save her, I swear...", But I wasn't listening anymore.
I already stood up and walked down the hallway, my feet moving by themselves, my thoughts blank, my heart broken.
