Glass
Nightmares. All Iris wanted was to just get some sleep. But, of course, she wasn't getting any. Of. course. Because life couldn't be that easy.
Iris groaned as she moved her position on the bed once more. It was no use. No matter how many times she changed it, she couldn't sleep.
Iris gave up, and slipped out of her bed. Cool air gently silked around her.
She took a deep breath as she stepped into the kitchen for a cup of water. She picked up the full cup after filling it, but misjudged its weight and dropped it. The glass cup shattered, splintering across the tile floor.
Iris knelt and picked a larger fragment of glass. It was cold in her hand, and somewhat refreshing.
"What are you doing?"
Iris shrieked, dropping the fragment. It fell, breaking again into two separate pieces.
"What is it?" She glared at Theo.
He just looked down at her, his expression blank.
"What are you doing?" He repeated, ignoring her question.
She stood, "I'm just getting a glass of water."
He pointed at the scattered fragments, "that's not a glass of water, that's just glass. What. Are. You. Doing."
"Jeez, Theo. I just dropped the glass, okay?" Iris rolled her eyes, but a flicker of fear touched Theo's face. Iris just barely caught it.
She stepped closer hesitantly, studying his face. "Are you okay?"
His eyes met hers and she almost gasped. Fear. Real fear shadowing his expression. It was rare to get even the slightest reaction or emotion on his face, but to see one so strong...
Then it hit her. Sarah. His sister. Suicide by cutting.
Without thinking, Iris pulled him into a hug. His face automatically was buried in her neck and his arms instinctively hung loosely around her waist. She took a deep breath from the strangely familiar contact.
Theo stiffened, then relaxed. His huge body nearly swallowed up hers, but he was surprisingly gentle. They laid on Theo's bed, tangled up with each other and just laid there quietly. Until... they drifted off to sleep.
