Belonging To More Than A Resistance
"I completed the mission," I told him blankly, handing over the file without meeting his eyes.
He sighs, running his hand through his hair, "any casualties?"
I stared at him, trying not to flinch as he met my eyes with an emotion I couldn't quite decipher. "That's not exactly a question a high rank of The Dark Resistance would ask."
"Sometimes I wish I weren't one," he told me softly, staring back down at the file in his hand. The file that could ruin the world. "I can't believe you agreed to this mission." He dropped another truth on me. Honesty. Something I haven't felt warming my mind in years.
"What's that supposed to mean?" I asked sharply.
He chuckled, "well, you aren't exactly an expert on taking orders you don't agree with. When the Crown's general told you your mission, I was sure you would lash out and punch him in the face or something."
Hesitantly, I smiled back, "I wanted to, trust me."
"I do trust you, Elaina, I always have." Once again, he urged me to greet him back with honesty.
We fell silent for several moments, before he spoke, "Right now, I don't know if I want to kiss you or shove you off the bridge."
"Can I pick?"
He looked at me then with his eyebrows knitted together, "if you wish."
I stepped forward hesitantly, and placed my lips on his, gently. And for that small moment, we forgot about the pain we have both experienced, the lies we have both been forced to tell to survive, and the truths we have hidden since childhood. For that small moment, I was his, and he was mine.
