CH52 The Promise
^ Amazing !!
[Adrien's POV]
Ladybug and I have patrol tonight but I left early to check on the observatory again. I've been keeping track of it for a while now and it turns out my father goes there a lot more often than I knew. I'm talking abnormally frequently. But I can't go in there anymore, not even on the rare occasion when he isn't there. There are new locks on the door—at least seven of them. If my dad got locks for the door then maybe he found out about the hideout camp inside. He has probably been fixing the place up.
I take a seat on the Eifel tower and look up at the starry night sky.
"It's beautiful, isn't it?"
I tear my eyes away from the stars to see Ladybug sitting next to me, staring at the sky. Her big blue eyes are flecked with silver sparkles. Her lustrous locks are flowing gracefully in the midnight breeze.
"Yeah...it is." I breathe.
Ladybug smiles at me. I look into her masked eyes, which so beautifully reflect the starry sky. Ladybug...she is enchantingly mysterious, just like the night. I've been so obnoxiously caught up in the present. What if she were to fade away like the midnight breeze?
"Ladybug...have you ever thought about what happens after we catch Hawkmoth?" I ask.
Ladybug seems surprised by the weight of my question, it takes her some consideration to answer it. "Well, I suppose we would just help out with small things like robberies. I mean, it would be for the best. We can't keep up this double-life forever. Eventually we'll have to grow up, go to college, get jobs, maybe even get married and raise a family."
I feel a sudden aching, like my heart has been pierced.
"How could you say that?"
"What's the matter?" Ladybug questions.
"How could you say that it would be better...W-What about us? What about this whole life we've lived together?" I say, my voice quivering.
I don't want to leave this life behind...I don't want Ladybug to fade away.
"I'm just speaking logically, Chat. We are superheros, our very existence is to save Paris. It was because of Hawkmoth that we got these powers in the first place..." Ladybug looks down sadly. "We would be lucky to keep them at all afterwards."
"Exactly. Our lives have been lead by Hawkmoth. He has made us who we are. I-I know we have to stop him but...aren't you scared?" I reply weakly.
"It might be hard to adjust but I guess when we finally find Hawkmoth then we'll just have to find something else to live for." Ladybug answers.
I lower my head uneasily.
"Why are you thinking about the future all of a sudden?" Ladybug asks.
I reach out and take Ladybug's hand in mine. "I...I don't who you are, Ladybug. Once we take off our masks, we'll just fade away into a sea of nameless faces. Are you telling me that after all we've been through, we'll just have to never see each other ever again and pretend we never met. You want me to forget you ever existed? Do you want to forget that I ever existed?"
Ladybug's eyes are shining with tears. She shakes her head slowly. "No...No, that's not what I..." She whispers painfully. "I don't want that at all, Chat..."
I grip Ladybug's hands tightly and look into her eyes. "Let's make a promise."
"Okay..." Ladybug says unsurely.
"After we defeat Hawkmoth...let's show each other who we are." I propose.
Ladybug exhales a shaky breath.
"I know you're scared....but I'm scared of losing you." I squeeze Ladybug's hands gently and bring them up to my lips. "So please...please, promise me. Let's make this pact together."
Ladybug nods slowly. She takes a deep breath and looks into my eyes. "Okay, Chat. It's a deal."
I let out a breath of relief, but my heart is still racing. I think I'm even more afraid than before. I have this strange, unsettling feeling that the end is drawing nearer....
