Love Complicated - Chapter 2

Aden on the side ---->

"You ready for this?" Tally asked as she turned her car off, grabbing her book bag. Avery took a deep breath and blew it out. "Ready," She replied, and the two climbed out of the car, walking towards the schools main entrance. Avery could feel curious eyes on her, and she smiled politely at the students staring until they got to the office.

Tally left her at her locker with a comforting smile ten minutes later before she rushed off to a cheer leading meeting. Avery collected her books, found her map, and started feeling the slightest bit of confidence when she heard the bell ring and swore under her breath. She was going to be late to home room. She walk-jogged in the direction of her classroom, and sighed in relief when she found the door. Walking inside, she found herself staring at the back of someone as he argued with the teacher. His voice was calm, his stance relaxed and carefree. Avery cleared her throat and spoke.

"Um, Mrs Stack?" She asked tentatively, and the boy slowly turned. The same blue eyes from the pier yesterday bore into hers as she swallowed and took in his features. Strong jaw, straight nose, bronze skin, a mouth that just invited kisses. Hair a dark chestnut colour, the strands looked soft. She saw him fold his arms and smirk as she tore her eyes away from his and onto the small brunette going grey teacher, and smiled slightly.

"Avery Woods? Welcome in dear!" Mrs Stack said, and turned to the boy again. "Aden seat. Avery, would you like to find a seat." Her eyebrows rose slightly at the change in tone when talking to Aden and her. She saw his arms flex, his muscles showing without effort. She glanced up one more time and was caught again in his eyes. They were alluring, the bright blue burned. He was assessing her, she could see the casual indifference in his eyes.

Sighing, Avery slipped past him, accidently brushing her arm against his. "After you," He muttered behind her. Avery glanced over her shoulder and grinned slightly. He smirked again, folding his arms over his chest as he found his seat. Once the teacher had finished announcements, the class was given time to talk freely to each other.

"So," Brittany said, her shrill voice making Avery jump as she appeared in front of her. Avery took in her short skirt and tight top, before looking at her face.. "Woods is back. I'd say it's nice to see you, but it's not." Brittany sneered, and Avery scoffed at her attempt of an insult.

"Gee, lovely to see you again too, Brittany!" Avery replied sarcastically, and Brittany glared.

“You're just like I remembered you, pig.” Brittany laughed, and Avery joined in.

"Why are you laughing?" Brittany frowned, and Avery shook her head incredulously.

"You think that hurt my feelings? Oh Brittany you need to brush up on your insults.” Avery laughed again, and Brittany huffed before sauntering away, but not before she trailed her hand over Aden's shoulders. She glanced back at Avery, and she got the message loud and clear. Stay away from Aden.

Grateful the bell rung, Avery collected her books and started walking in the general direction of her history class. It was no surprise to her that Brittany saw her as a potential threat on her man, although Avery knew she wasn't one. There was no way she would score someone that damn good-looking...

"Ouch!" She moaned, rubbing her nose. She looked up to see she'd collided with Aden's chest.

"Last time I checked, people looked where they were walking." Aden's voice drifted over her, and Avery fought the urge to snort.

"Well you should be wearing your 'back off' sticker, then."

Aden raised an eyebrow, his mouth hinting a smile. Avery stared for a few seconds before ripping her eyes away. "Ah, the talk Brittany had with you just before in home room,"

"Oh yes, the nice catch up we had," She said sarcastically. "Although it's been nice chatting to you, I don't want to be chopped into mincemeat by your girlfriend, so goodbye." Avery turned and Aden chuckled. "She's not my girlfriend."

"Well your fuck buddy or whatever," She threw over her shoulder as she walked confidently off to her next classroom. Her heart was beating fast when she realised what she had just said. She had no right to say things like that to him, especially the last comment. Although she was pretty sure what she said was true.

"Just worry about chemistry," Avery muttered to herself as she plonked down in a spare seat, mulling over her kind of shittish first day so far.

"You look happy." Tally's voice shot her out of her thoughts and back to the present.

"Did I mention how much I love high school?" Avery muttered and Tally just laughed, patting her shoulder calmly.

"Welcome back, Woods." She smiled.

Thankfully, Avery had managed to make it to her final period without making any more enemies. She had met many new and old friends, and Rocky Cove was already starting to feel like home again. Walking into her history class feeling better with each class, Avery handed a slip to her teacher, and he smiled.

“Miss Woods! Welcome to History. You're partnered with Aden Shaw.” He pointed to the table slightly to the left, third row back. Aden was leaning back casually in his chair, his arms behind his head as he chatted with some other guy. Brittany was in his lap again, and Avery glanced between the two before she started walking towards the table. On her way, she knocked against some books, and they fell to the floor.

“Oh, I'm sorry!” Avery said, bending to pick them up. She heard a chuckle, and saw a male body bend to eye level with hers.

“It's okay, it was an accident.” The guy said, and Avery stared mesmerized at his face. If Aden was the most good-looking, this guy was a close second. Blond shaggy hair and bright green eyes and a welcoming smile, Avery felt comforted in his presence.

“I'm Scott. You must be Avery.” He held out a hand as they both stood, and Avery took it, smiling.

“How'd you know who I was?” She asked, and Scott settled back in his seat. “My older sisters friends with your aunt. She talked about you coming, so you must be her.”

Avery nodded, happy she had met such a friendly guy. Glancing at Aden and Brittany, she saw he was already watching her. His eyes held no expression, and yet he looked...annoyed. Frowning, Avery turned back to Scott and replied.

“She mentioned you, I think.” Avery said, and it wasn't a complete lie. Fiona loved chatting about men, she had already given her a list of guys to get to know. Avery rolled her eyes mentally at her aunts girlishness.

“I better get to my seat, Scott. I'll see you round?” She asked hopefully, and he nodded, blond hair falling over his eyes slightly.

Brittany's lips were already formed in a sneer before they even reached them. “I see you're getting acquainted with the other students. Good for you.” She said, as if she were sympathizing a friend.

“Who Scott? He's nice.” Avery forced a smile, just to throw her off. It worked.

“Well then.” Avery snorted under her breath at the response. Or lack of response.

“I'll see you free period, baby.” Brittany smiled seductively at Aden, who just nodded, eyes still on Avery.

“What?” She asked once the other girl had left.

“You shouldn't throw Brittany off like that, her brain can't handle too many things at once.”

“Like you're with her for her intelligence.” Avery said sarcastically. Aden shook his head, chuckling, and Avery tried not to notice the way his shirt went taut over his back when he leant on the desk. Even though she wasn't looking at him, she could still feel his presence, slightly intoxicating, beside her. His warmth generated to her, seeping through her top, warming her skin. His smell slivered up her nostrils, the husky musk of male somewhat making her want to lean in more.

“-and next week, I will assign the work for partners. Even though we're only half way through the school year, this assignment will make half of your grade. So get studying!” The bell rang and Avery stood quickly, but Aden stood in front of her and stretched.

“Can you move please?” Avery asked, and Aden shot her an amused look.

“Someone's a little touchy today.” Aden smirked and Avery wasn't about to tell him that half of that was because of him.

“I just have somewhere to be.” She lied impatiently, and he turned towards the door, walking at snail pace. Avery couldn't stop her eyes from travelling lower. Sucking in a breath at his butt, she suddenly blushed. She was such a pervert! Then for the second time that day, her nose collided with Aden.

His smile threatened laughter, and Avery glared. “Don't.”

“Don't what? Ignore the fact you were staring at my bum or laugh?” Avery's eyes widened, but she managed a quick response.

“Well...it is a little bony.” She said, and watched as he stilled, taking it as her chance to slip past him, and almost laughed at the disbelief on his face. “It's okay, Aden. Not all of us can have nice butts.”

And with that, she walked away laughing.

So this is probably one of the most boring stories you've read, but I thought hey why not give it a go? :) It'll get better, I promise!
