Chapter 16
Taehyung is in the cab looking at the number he's just saved.
He opens KakaoTalk and searches for So-Hee's picture in her contact information. There's a wait before the picture uploads. So-Hee is in her beautiful dress, smiling, and the picture seems to have been taken during a shoot.
He's staring intently at the picture as if hoping it would magically get him inside the picture.
The phone starts to ring though but it's not So-Hee.
It's Kim Yoo-Jung and her daily call to check whether Taehyung is still alive and depressed, rather than drunk and dead.
'Hey! Open the door! I'm standing outside. All your shitty neighbors are staring at me as if I'm a prostitute!' barks Yoo-Jung.
' I'm not home. I will be there in . . .' he checks his watch. 'Thirty minutes.'
'Shit. Thirty minutes! Where the hell are you? And how many times have I asked you to keep a key on the window sill? Why can't you remember that?'
'I forget it intentionally. Because what if you enter with your own key someday and find me naked?'
'Ugh! Disgusting.'
' Exactly!'
'You seem happy today,' remarks Yoo-Jung.
' I'm not happy. I'm sad. I'm almost depressed. It's a good kind of sad. The kind of sad I was when I saw Free Willy escape into the wilderness.'
'I don't get what's that kind of sad. Wait. What happened last night? Did you get some action?' she asks.
'Not really.'
'Where were you last night?'
'In a hotel room.'
Yoo-Jung wants to sound concerned but her enthusiasm is too overwhelming.
'What! with whom?'
'Someone who really likes my music.'
' Don't tell me it's Seo Ji-Hye or I will puke. I have seen her naked pictures and I don't want that image in my head again,' grumbles Yoo-Jung.
'No, no! It's someone else.'
'Who? Did you sleep with her?'
'Yes, I did sleep with her, but nothing happened. We just slept. Though I did see her in a towel even though I tried not to and she looked beautiful. Like if you kind of grind all the pretty Korean actresses into a fine paste, put it in a cauldron, boil it, distill all the good parts, and put the concoction in a girl, you will get her.'
' I'm quite skeptical if that process is scientific.'
'I see no other way she could have been made otherwise,' argues Taehyung.
'Wait. So you slept together, and she was in a towel and you saw her and she saw you seeing her and nothing happened. Why? How?'
'I think I was overwhelmed by her awesomeness.'
'Overwhelmed by her awesomeness?'
'It felt like I had created her out of my will. She was beautiful. Like beautiful, beautiful. Not like you enter a store, someone gives you a makeover, dresses you up, sprays at your air and you're beautiful. She's beautiful in her sleep, in her faded pink pajamas, in her ruffled hair and the puffy eyes. No one else could have carried off that face.'
'Umm . . . and still you couldn't get yourself to score?'
'I wasn't thinking about it,' he responds honestly.
'You weren't thinking about it? Are you, like, gay?'
'I just realized that I did sound like that.'
'Now come soon! I will be waiting downstairs, warding off other customers,' complains Yoo-Jung before disconnecting the call.
Taehyung's smiling, still wondering if what happened the night before actually did, and is struggling to piece together the sequence of events before it ends up in one jumbled mess.
Just as he's doing that, remembering that his head is still pretty bashed up and there could be internal bleeding and he could die, his notification rings.
On text:
So-Hee: Umm. Hi.
Taehyung: Umm. Hi.
So-Hee: How is your head?
Taehyung: I was just thinking about that. There could be some internal bleeding and I was wondering if I could die because of that.
So-Hee: It makes me feel worse. If there's anything worse.
Taehyung:?
So-Hee: Would you think of me like a clingy, overbearing fan if I said I think I already miss you?
So-Hee: God, I sound desperate.
So-Hee: See. I think you just blocked me.
So-Hee: Damn.
So-Hee: Well. Bye.
Taehyung: Haha.
So-Hee: What?
Taehyung: I wasn't replying because I was reading each of your messages thrice.
So-Hee: At the cost of making me feel shit.
Taehyung: But I needed to read them again.
Time passes by. But there are no messages exchanged but So-Hee and Taehyung are looking at their phones.
So-Hee: I want to write something to keep the conversation alive but don't know what.
Taehyung: I was thinking of sending a smiley too but those are conversation killers.
So-Hee: True that. About to reach the airport. I don't think I have ever been sadder to see an airport.*Feels like such a pile on* *kills herself*
Taehyung:*runs* *saves her*
So-Hee:*dream comes true* *blushing*
Taehyung: Reached?
So-Hee: Almost. Can we not talk about how I am leaving?
Taehyung: How can we not talk about that? You are my only legitimate fan and you're going. If you were a true fan, you would have stayed.
So-Hee: Don't make me feel bad now.
Taehyung: I was kidding.
So-Hee: That's a conversation killer.
Taehyung: Would it help if I said that if I kind of......miss you too?
Taehyung:?
Taehyung: Was it too soon?
Taehyung: Damn. I should have acted like a celebrity.
So-Hee:*reads thrice* *giggles* *colleagues look on strangely* *ask a million questions*
Taehyung: Did you tell them?
So-Hee: I wouldn't know where to start. Did you tell anyone?
Taehyung: Kim Yoo-Jung.My best friend.
So-Hee: What did you tell her? PS; I still can't believe I am texting YOU. You were supposed to be unavailable. You were supposed to be on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. You were not supposed to be a person I would know and text.
Taehyung:*blushes*
So-Hee: That's a little girlish.*Just kidding, my feminist self glaring at me*
Taehyung: *lifts fumble with hair-stubble* *bashes people around* *drinks protein shakes* *farts and burps*
So-Hee: lmao. But what did you tell your friend?
Taehyung: Everything.
So-Hee: What did she say?
Taehyung: She was disappointed I didn't get laid.
So-Hee: :O
Taehyung: SHE was disappointed.Not ME.SHE.
So-Hee: Not you?Not even a bit?
Taehyung: You're making me think about it now. I don't want to think about it.
So-Hee: Why not?
So-Hee: Oh.Shit.Today is a bad day. I didn't want to come out that strongly.
Taehyung: Why not?
So-Hee: I am a bit of a hypocrite in these matters.
Taehyung: Elaborate.
So-Hee: I talk and behave...like someone on a hormonal overdrive. I send out all the wrong signals, and when people catch them, I run the opposite way.
Taehyung: That's kind of cruel.
So-Hee: I am a bit of a coward that way.
Taehyung: Hmmm...
So-Hee: Do you think I can call?
So-Hee: Are you still there?
So-Hee: Shit.
Taehyung: Of course.Hehe
So-Hee: I will kill you.
Taehyung checks his hair on the rear-view mirror before he receives the call.
'Hi, again!' says Taehyung.
'If we talk this much, I'm afraid I will run out of my charm, if there's any, and you will realize that your fascination with the boy whose music you like is starting to wear off.'
'That wore off the minute I first talked to you,' says So-Hee.
'I found someone better.'
' I'm sure someone pays you to be nice to me,' says Taehyung and pays the cab driver.
'I think it's the other way round. Wait. Gotta go inside.'Taehyung holds.
He likes this and he has never liked this. He was never the person who talks on the phone. He was a 'texter' once, then he was an 'emailer', but never someone who would want to talk at length. It was boring, but this is refreshing, he likes this.
'Yes, sorry. Are you sure you're not busy?' asks So-Hee.
' You're forgetting that I'm an engineering dropout who's struggling at being a struggling musician.'
'Stop saying that. I'm serious.'
Taehyung can almost feel the anger in her voice. He can see her face contort, her eyes narrow and her fist slightly clench.
'Fine.'
' What are you going to do today?' asks So-Hee.
'I'm sorry, am I boring you now? I am, right? I should probably disconnect, find a hole and hide my head in it.'
'If you become a bore, I will disconnect and switch my phone off. So till the time I don't that, you're in the safe zone.'
'That just scares me. Now every time I find your phone switched off I will think it's because of me.' Then she adds after a pause. 'Not that I would call you a lot of times. Ummm . . . but can I call you?'
'Of course.'
' I'm making such a mess of myself here. Usually, I'm a lot smoother.'
' You're still smooth.'
'I think I'm just panicking a little,' says So-Hee.
Taehyung can hear heavy breathing noises from the other side.
'I think it's cute,' says Taehyung.
' You're way cuter,' says So-Hee
'If there were any of my guy friends around and they were to hear this, they would laugh at me. It's exactly the kind of conversation that guys are mocked at for having.'
'But it's also the kind of conversation that you always remember,' argues So-Hee.
'. . .'
'. . .'
'Yes coming,'
'I will hold.'
