Forty
We opened the cookbook and skim the recipe and instructions again, then we divided our work. First, we switch on the stove to let it heat.
I sprinkled the beef steak with pepper and salt and taught Noah to fry them from all sides till they were light brown while I cut the onion and mushrooms.
When he was done, I put the chopped mushrooms and onions in the pan and let Noah fry them too.
I took the puff pastry dough and put it on the chopping board and put some flour on it, then cut them into four big squares for our steak.
While sprinkling the flour on it, an idea came to my mind. I glimpsed at Noah and saw him busy frying the vegetables. I put some flour on my cheek and bit my lip to stop the grin.
I have seen a lot of movies in which this cooking scene turns into a romantic one. Maybe I can turn this one too.
"I'm done," I announced and turned towards Noah, already feeling giddy.
"Me too." He replied and looked at me. When he noticed the flour on my face, he chuckled. "You got... uh something..." He pointed to his cheek.
"What?" I act oblivious and tried to clean my face.
"Here, let me." He murmured and came near me.
My heart beat faster in my chest, I closed my eyes and took a deep breath; I leaned my cheek towards him.
This is happening just as I imagined!
I felt Noah standing in front of me, and waited for his hand to touch my cheek, but gasped in surprise when he blew more flour at my face.
"WTF!" I screamed and cleaned my eyes, glaring at Noah. He burst out laughing and went on his knees while I looked at him in disbelief.
He paused for a second and looked at me. "T-that was- the look on your face!" He started laughing again. I watched him in amusement.
It didn't turn out the way I wanted, but at least the gloomy mood vanished.
"Oh, you are on Noah." I gave him a mischievous smile and took flour in my fist.
His eyes went round as he watched me striding towards him. He put his hand in front. "You wouldn't..."
"I definitely would," I said and launched myself at him.
He ran around the counter with me trailing behind me. "Lexi, don't do it!"
"You started it!" I yelled, running after him.
He stopped on the opposite side of the table. "Let's talk like civilized adults."
I scoffed. "Now you want to talk like adults?"
"Y-yeah, I mean we don't want to m-mess the kitchen, right?" He darted his eyes around the mess already made. "Not more than this. Mom will get angry." He gave a horrified look.
"Hm..." I acted to think about his suggestion. "Okay..." I slowly went around the counter. "But after I take my revenge!"
I ran towards him but my shoes slip on the flour that was on the floor making me fall to the ground.
THUD!
"F**k!" I screamed, groaning in pain.
This is embarrassing!
"Are you okay?" Noah came crouching by my side, looking concerned.
"More like embarrassed," I murmured, sitting on the floor.
He chuckled, shaking his head. "You keep falling whenever we are alone, huh?"
His comment made me froze in my place, staring at the floor.
Falling?
Am I falling for him?
I blinked my eyes, then slowly turned my gaze to Noah. "What?" He asked, frowning.
I gulped. "Noah-" His landline ringing cut me off.
"I'll go check it." He murmured, getting up. I groaned and rubbed my face.
I swear if it's Ivy I'm going to choke her to death!
"Hello?" Noah picked his phone. I got to my feet, dusting my clothes. "She's here."
I turned my face towards Noah. "Who is it?"
"It's Darren." He answered, frowning. "He's looking for you...?" He said, sounding unsure.
"Why?" I asked, standing towards him. He put the phone on speaker. "Yes, Darren."
"Lexi, are you okay?" He asked with concern.
"Besides my back aching AF, I'm okay," I replied.
"She's okay." He answered someone in the background.
"What's going on Darren?" I glanced at Noah, who looked equally confused.
I heard movement behind then Emily's voice came. "Where are you Lexi and why aren't you picking your phone?!"
"I'm at Noah's and my phone..." I remembered throwing my bag in my room and forgot to pick it in the morning. "I forgot my phone at home."
"Who forgets their phone? Do you have any idea how worried I was?!"
"What's going on Emily?"
"I-" She paused I heard soft murmurs then Emily spoke again. "Nothing much, just you weren't picking your phone, so I got worried that's all." She stuttered.
"Are you sure...?"
"Yes. Have fun with Noah we'll talk later!" With that, she hung up.
"I wonder what was that about?" Noah muttered beside me.
"Same." Noah and I looked at each other then he snickered, covering his mouth.
"You got something-"
"Don't." I gave him a warning look. "Let's put the beef in the oven, then I'll clean it up."
We put the beef in the dough and placed it in the oven for twenty minutes. Then we cleaned the mess in the kitchen and went to Noah's room so I could clean myself too.
After washing my face I came out of the bathroom and sat on Noah's bed. His bed reminded me of last night, but I shook my head.
"So Emily and Darren are together-" Noah looked me in confusion. "-on Sunday morning. I wonder if something between them last night." I gave him a sly smile.
"What are you suggesting?" Noah asked, narrowing his eyes at me.
"Nothing." I shrugged, biting my grin. "Just saying that they both look good together."
"They do." Noah agreed with me.
"I totally shipped them!" I squealed in excitement. Noah chuckled at my reaction. My eyes went to his desk behind and I saw the journal, the same one I have seen him writing in our Home Ec. class.
"What do you write in it?" I gestured towards the journal.
"N-nothing important." He muttered.
"You play guitar." I glanced at Noah who tensed sitting on his chair.
"N-no." I raised my brow at him, then he sighed. "A little, I'm not an expert. How did you even know about this?"
"Call it a hunch." I winked at him, then sat crossed legs on his bed. "Can you play something for me?"
"N-now?" I gave him a grin and nodded. "As I said, I'm not an expert-"
"Come on, Noah." I pouted. "Just a song, any song."
He pondered on it for a second, then nodded. My grin widened as I watched him taking his guitar case out.
He sat on his chair again and tuned it, then he closed his eyes and started playing. I listened to the music and instantly recognized the song.
"I won't lie to you
I know he's just not right for you
And you can tell me if I'm off
But I see it on your face
When you say that he's the one that you want
And you're spending all your time
In this wrong situation
And anytime you want it to stop"
I stared at him wide-eyed. Out of all the songs in this world, he had to sing this one.
"I know I can treat you better than he can
And any girl like you deserves a gentleman
Tell me why are we wasting time
On all your wasted crying
When you should be with me instead?
I know I can treat you better
Better than he can."
He opened his eyes and his gaze met mine; I took a quick sharp inhale.
"I'll stop time for you
The second you say you'd like me to
I just wanna give you the loving that you're missing
Baby, just to wake up with you
Would be everything I need, and this could be so different
Tell me what you want to do
'Cause I know I can treat you better than he can
And any girl like..."
He averted his gaze from me and continued playing.
"I know I can treat you better than he can (Oh-ho)
better than he can."
He finished the song and there was pin-drop silence in the room. None of us said anything. He glanced at me, snapping me back to reality.
"That...was...wow." I cleared my throat, sitting straight. "You lied to me."
"Huh?" He blinked his eyes at me in confusion.
"I mean, you lied that you can't play." I gestured towards the guitar. "That was amazing."
"Right." He muttered, getting up and putting it back in the case.
"Noah I-" The timer went off the oven echoed in his house.
"I guess it's ready," Noah said getting downstairs, I sighed in defeat.
