|Chapter #39: Promises & Preparations|

Mrinal and Vineet visit Ruhana’s home. The old lady is in awe of the simplicity and elegance of the house. Ruhaani tells Mrinal that although they live on rent in this house, her mom has designed and decorated everything very tastefully, and she loves the aura of it. Even Mrinal is impressed by the serenity of the place. She further banters with Ruhaani and then declares that she’s there to take Ruhana and her daughter home. Ruhana is touched and surprised at the same time.

“Ruhana, beta, main umeed karti hoon ki ab tumhe koi duvidha nahi hogi. Main jaanti thi ki tum hichak sakti ho, lekin koi zarurat nahi hai.”

“Kehte hai na ki kismat se zyada aur waqt se pehle kisi ko kuch nahi milta. Aur shayad mere bete ki kismat mein tum ho, aur tumhari beti bhi. Isliye hi toh in dono ka itna achcha rishta ban gaya hai,” Mrinal says, the two ladies look at their respective son and daughter, they find Ruhaani clinging to her dad, and they’re talking about something.

“Aap bilkul thik keh rahi hain. Jab maine socha tha ki mujhe koi rishta nahi chahiye, tab Vineet meri zindagi mein aaya. Sach mein, zindagi bahut unpredictable hoti hai, par ye bhi sach hai kuch cheezein khushiyan lekar aati hain,” Ruhana says while glancing at her daughter.

“Tum sach kehti ho, Ruhana. Aur ab main bilkul derr nahi karna chahti hoon, main chahti hoon ki jaldi se jaldi tumhari aur Vineet ki shadi karva doon. Thik rahega na?” she asks.

“Lekin itni jaldi? I mean, kuch taiyari toh karni hogi na?” Ruhana asks.

“Wo sab main dekh lungi, beta, main toh bas jald se jald tum dono ki shadi karva dena chahti hoon. Itne saalon mein Vineet ne tumhe pasand kiya hai, toh main aur derr nahi karna chahti hoon,” Mrinal says while she looks at her son and his prospective bride.

“Ma, humne court marriage karne ka faisla kiya hai,” Vineet says, leaving Ruhana surprised.

“Vineet, tumhe…” she starts, but he interrupts her.

“Mujhe pata hai, tum court marriage ke liye hi kahogi, sahi bhi toh hai,” Vineet says, reading her mind.

“Thik hai, jaise tum dono thik samjho. Lekin maine pandit ji se baat kar li hai, agle hafte ka muhurat nikla hai, aur main ek chhote se function mein ye shadi karna chahti hoon. Kyunki zindagi khatm tab hoti hai jab hum sab kuch chhod dete hain, lekin tum dono toh nayi shuruaat karne jaa rahe ho naa…” Mrinal looks at both of them.

“Bahut mazaa aayega, Daadi. Mere Mumma-Papa ki shaadi mein dhamaal toh hona hi chahiye,” Ruhaani chuckles, making her elders smile.

“Bilkul, hume kisi se darna nahi hai na, kisi aur se pyar karne se pehle khud se pyar karna zaroori hota hai, isliye agle hafte ka jo muhurat hai, uspe hi tum dono ki shadi hogi. Tum log kaam se chhutti lo, aur jo bhi arrangements karne hain, wo karo. Aur Ruhaani, tum meri madad karogi, tumhare Maa-baap ko toh apne hi kaamon se time nahi milega,” Mrinal says teasingly.

“Oh yes, Dadi, bahut mazaa aayega, toh hum sabse pehle kya karenge?” Ruhaani asks.

“Umm, pehle rings kharidenge, phir wedding dress aur phir baaki ki cheezein dekhenge,” Vineet suggests.

“Yay, main aap dono ke liye rings choose karungi,” Ruhaani chuckles.

“Of course, Princess! Aap hi choose karengi, aur decoration bhi tum dekhna,” Vineet says, and the girl is glad with the responsibility given to her.

Meanwhile, Ruhana wants to say something. She turns to Mrinal and holds her hand, but before she could speak, the lady asks her to call her Ma, and Ruhana is touched at the moment.

“Ma, ek hafte mein saari taiyariyan kaise hongi? Aur phir main chahti thi ki ye shaadi saadgi se ho jaye,” she says hesitantly.

“Sab bahut simple hoga, beta. Lekin nayi shuruaat chhupa ke nahi ki jaati hai, beta. Main jaanti hoon tum aisa kyun chahti ho, lekin beta, ye ek nayi shuruaat hai na, isey khul ke apnao. Samajh rahi ho na?” Mrinal tries to explain, and Ruhana smiles.

She knows that she can’t deny this lady. She’s been dreaming of seeing her son getting married, and now that Vineet has stated that he will marry only Ruhana, she wants to show off a little. She agrees with Mrinal, and the lady then makes her wear a gold chain. There’s another chain for Ruhaani, and the girl is excited. But, there’s a question too.

“Aapne Mumma ko diya, samajh mein aaya, mujhe kyun?” she asks innocently.

“Vo isliye kyunki ab mere ghar mein ek nahi 2 lakshmiyan aayengi na. Khushiyan bhi doguni hongi,” Mrinal explains, and Ruhaani hugs her.

This is the first time that someone has given so much importance to her. Meanwhile, Ruhana asks the mother-son duo to stay for lunch, but they decline. Instead, Mrinal suggests that they must start shopping, as it’s Sunday. Ruhana is stunned but agrees.

Soon, the mother and daughter get ready, and the four of them leave the house. As she follows the other three, she finds Ruhaani hopping into the passenger’s seat beside Vineet while Mrinal takes her place in the backseat. She scolds Ruhaani and asks Mrinal to sit in the front, but she declines.

“Main bhi tumse 2-4 baatein kar lun, hmm! Kya buraai hai isme?” Mrinal asks.

“Aisi koi baat nahi hai, Ma. Lekin excitement mein, na toh Ruhaani ko kuch samajh aata hai aur na Vineet ko, kuch bhi karte hain,” Ruhana says, making a face.

“Isliye toh hamari jodi hit hai, Mumma! Aur vaise bhi buddy loves me more,” Ruhaani winks at her mother.

“Han, han, pata hai mujhe! Lekin koi baat nahi, mere pas bhi ek partner hai. Jao, tum dono team banao apni, main maa ke sath team up karungi,” Ruhana replies, holding Mrinal’s hand.

“Haww, noo, ye cheating hai. Dadi meri team mein hai,” the girl whines.

“No! You can choose one!” Ruhana replies mischievously.

“That’s unfair, Mumma!” Ruhaani whines.

“No, everything is fair in love and war, hai na, Mr. Oberoi?” she asks while Vineet adjusts the rearview mirror only to glance at her.

“Han, pata hai, lekin tum bahut fayda le rahi ho iss baat ka,” he comments.

“Pehli baar mauka mila hai, toh fayda toh lungi na, Vineet. Bahut lucky hote hain wo log jinhe tum jaise jeevansathi milte hain, aur Maa bhi! Koi aur hota toh shayad…” She says but pauses, not wanting to reflect on the negative side.

“Jab do log apne faisle le lete hain, beta, tab koi unhe rok nahi sakta. Ab tumhe sirf apne aap aur apni beti pe dhyan dena chahiye, ya ye kahun ki hum sab par,” Mrinal says.

Ruhana nods. Soon, they reach the jewellery shop, and Mrinal asks Ruhana and Vineet to choose their rings. Ruhaani takes her place between the two and chooses two designs for them.

“Yeh dono lenge, it is perfect for you two,” she chuckles.

“Nice choice, Ruhaani, this is beautiful,” Vineet praises her.

“Yay, I knew it, aapko meri choice hi maanni padegi,” she chuckles jokingly.

Vineet smiles and moves ahead to make the payment, where his mom adds a pendant set, and he happily pays for the same. After shopping for the rings, Ruhaani announces that she is hungry, so they head to a nearby restaurant. Vineet walks to place the order. Ruhaani follows him as it’s a self-service place, while the two ladies adore them. Meanwhile, Ruhaani brings two glasses of mojito for her mom and grandma. When Mrinal rejects it, she makes her drink it, telling her that she needs
to try it.

However, Vineet joins them with two other drinks for himself and Ruhaani. As Vineet engages in a conversation with Ruhaani and her mom, Mrinal has a contented smile on her face.

She has understood that love is not something that only happens to young people; you can find love whenever you get a chance. For example, her son found his true love, while it’s the second chance for Ruhana, and it’s equally beautiful. Right now, all she wants is her children’s happiness.

To Be Continued.
