Filling In

It was a couple weeks after Kevin and Kara officially reconciled and got back together again. Robin was used to hanging out with Kevin and Bruce whenever they did a father-son bonding experience such as watching a basketball or baseball game. Sometimes he would hang out with Tim, Cassandra, Tyler, Dick, and Barbara. He had a feeling that Dick was merely tolerating him, and it rubbed Robin the wrong way. It's as if either Dick saw Robin as a potential threat to his relationship, or Dick was hiding something. Of course, Robin wouldn't deny that the wheelchair-bound Barbara Gordon was attractive. He learned of how she was unable to walk again and could no longer be Batgirl, and Robin felt great sympathy for the redheaded girl. No-one deserved what Barbara had to endure at the hands of that
psychopathic clown calling himself Joker. If things were different, Robin would totally ask Barbara out on a romantic date. But he understood that Barbara loved Dick, and he knew it would be a foolish idea to interfere with that relationship. Sometimes Robin would also hang out with Kevin's girlfriend Kara when the couple were out together. Unlike Dick, Kara liked Robin's presence and could understand why Kevin would consider Robin a good friend.

On one particular day, Robin was playing basketball with Kevin. So far, Kevin was winning. "I guess we can add good at playing basketball to many of your great attributes," quipped Robin. "Well, it was my favorite sport growing up," said Kevin, "that and baseball. Those two sports are the best sports the Lord ever made." Robin chuckled, "I can agree with you on that." Robin then took the basketball and threw the ball into the hoop, making a score. Suddenly, Robin's cell phone rang. "Hey, timeout?" Robin asked. "Sure," said Kevin, "I think we should rehydrate anyway." As Kevin went to get some water, Robin picked up his cell phone casually asked, "yello?"

"Hey Robin." Barbara said on the phone. "Uh, hi Barbara..." Robin bashfully said, getting red in the face. Kevin could tell that Robin was talking to Barbara since he always got shy whenever he talked to Barbara. He knew that Robin had a crush on Barbara. It reminded him of the way he was bashful when he first met Kara. "You doing anything tonight?" Barbara asked on the phone. Robin replied, "well; not really..." Barbara then said on the phone, "good. I was wondering if you would be willing to come over to The Clocktower tonight. Every Tuesday night, Dick watches Buffy the Vampire Slayer with me. But tonight he told me that he can't make it due to some sort of mission with the Titans. I asked Dinah if she would be willing to come over also, but she might actually be busy too..."

"Did you try asking Cassandra or Tyler?" Robin asked. "Cass is usually on patrol as Batgirl, and Tyler doesn't care for Buffy at all. She's more into Middle Earth stories," replied Barbara. "You're right on that last statement," said Robin, "okay then. I'll go over to The Clocktower and watch Buffy with you tonight. What time does it usually air on TV?" He may have sounded calm, but Robin was really excited to be spending time with Barbara. "8 p.m." replied Barbara, "thanks for filling in, Rob. It really means a lot to me." Robin smiled and said, "no problemo Babs. It's a date. I mean, well, it's not a romantic date or anything, but I guess it's a meeting between two friends of the opposite gender. Ah snafu, I'm rambling..." Robin could hear Barbara giggling on the phone as she replied, "don't worry, it's not a big deal Rob. See you before 8. Bye." And that's when she hung up. "So, guess you're hanging out with Babs, huh Casanova?" Kevin jokingly asked. "Yeah, it turns out Dick won't be able to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer with her tonight," said Robin, "I'm just filling in for Dick is all. No fuss, no muss. We're just friends is all."

"Okay then, you two have fun," encouraged Kevin as he winked at Robin. Much later, it was 7:30 p.m., and Robin drove all the way to the Gotham Clocktower, which was where Barbara lived and did her activities as the technical field advisor known as Oracle. "Wow, it's a lot bigger up close," thought Robin, "okay, maybe not King Kong on a building big, but definitely big..." Robin then went inside the Clocktower, taking the stairs. Once he made it to the top, Robin knocked on the door, the knocks in the tune of "Shave-and-a-Haircut, Two-Bits." A few seconds later, the door opened, revealing Barbara inside. She was wearing a Hello Kitty t-shirt, red sweats, and black flip-flops. "Heya Babs, I made it!" The toon said, smiling at Barbara. "Hey Rob, glad you could make it," said Barbara, "come inside, make yourself at home." Robin went inside and shut the door behind him. As he wandered around, Robin said in observation, "wow, this is a very nice place you got here."  Barbara beamed and said, "thanks. And good news, Dinah was able to make it as well. Have you met her yet?"

"I have not," said Robin, "but I've heard about her and Kevin's expressed interest in learning combat moves from her."

"Right you are hun," said a sultry voice. Suddenly, a woman in her late thirties early forties with blonde hair, blue eyes, and a firm and voluptuous body, standing around 5 foot 4, walked in. She was wearing a yellow tank top with blue jeans and fuzzy purple socks. This was Dinah Lance,  otherwise known as the Black Canary. "Dinah, this is my new friend Robin Warner," introduced Barbara, "Robin, this is my Birds of Prey leader, mentor, friend, and cohort, Dinah Lance, AKA the Black Canary." Robin looked up at the blonde bombshell and said, "hi, nice to meet you, Mrs. Lance." Dinah smiled warmly and said, "nice to meet you too, Mr. Warner. You weren't kidding Babs, he certainly does look like Yakko Warner." Robin chuckled, "well I am his cousin." The two shook hands. Barbara smiled, glad to see Robin and Dinah getting along. "A gentleman with a sense of humor? I like you already kid," said Dinah. "I got popcorn and candy in case you ladies are hungry," said Robin as he pulled out microwavable popcorn and boxes of candy out of his Acme cap. "Awww, you shouldn't have Rob," said Barbara as she beamed. As Robin put a bag of popcorn into the microwave, Barbara rolled her wheelchair over to the couch and Robin asked, "would you like some help getting on the couch?"

"No thanks, I got it," said Barbara as she used her arms to get out of her wheelchair and sit down on the couch, using all her strength. "That's pretty good exercise," said Robin. A couple minutes later, Robin made a bowl of popcorn that was large enough to feed three people. As the toon carried the popcorn, he bashfully asked, "can I please sit next to you Babs?" Barbara smiled and said, "sure, go ahead." Robin smiled and sat next to Barbara on her right side, and Dinah sat next to Barbara on her left side. Robin put the bowl of popcorn on Barbara's lap. Dinah looked at Robin and said, "y'know Robin, if you ever need someone to talk to, I'm always there.  I'm quite a good listener." Barbara nodded and said, "it's true. She's been a mother figure to all of us." Robin smiled and said, "I'll be sure to remember that Dinah." A couple minutes later, Buffy The Vampire Slayer then started. Robin was familiar with the show, so it was easy to catch up. Robin laughed at the jokes, invested in the characters and the story. The three friends then watched the rest of Buffy until the show was over. "Well I gotta say, that was pretty good," said Robin. "Thank you both for coming over and watching Buffy with me," said Barbara. "Of course Babs," replied Dinah, "I think watching shows with you is a good way to bond as a team. More than that actually."

"I agree," replied Robin, "and if you ever need someone to watch Buffy with you if Dick's not available, I'm there." Barbara smiled and said, "I'm glad to know that, Rob. You've been a real trooper. How would you like to watch The Princess Bride with me?" Robin brightened up and said, "that'd be awesome!" And so Robin, Barbara, and Dinah then watched The Princess Bride together. This was a movie that Barbara loved since she was young, and Robin himself loved that movie. When the movie was over, Robin and Barbara were both asleep, her flip flops off. Robin was cuddled up on Barbara, snoozing away. Dinah looked at the sleeping pair and thought, "aww... How sweet... Robin looks so cute when he's asleep, all cuddled up with Barbara... I'll let these two sleep." The sight was enough to make Dinah smile. Dinah then got out one of Barbara's spare blankets, and then covered Barbara and Robin with the blanket, letting them sleep together. Dinah then quietly left the Clocktower as Robin and Barbara continued to sleep peacefully together.
