Chapter Fifteen

"How was the symphony," I called out, heading into our hotel room.

"Jay?" I walked in further only to see a dress on the bed and a note.

A cab will pick you up at 8:30, I got you this to wear, with the help of Dale of course, but wear anything you would like beautiful.
-Jay

The actual dress itself was black with a mesh v cutout in the front. I piled my off-red hair on top of my head in what I hoped was a sexy way. I walked into the bathroom and groaned at what I saw. The shockingly lacy black linguine stared back at me as if it was taunting me. I picked it up and a note with two words on it.

For later

I blushed crimson. I didn't even have to guess who it was from.

"Alright," the cab driver pulled up to the towering building and slammed on the breaks, "enjoy your night."

I did my best to smile at him. He had obviously been working a double shift and smelled like nicotine. He was going to go home to his significant other and try to clean the dirt from under his nails, maybe read his little daughter a story book and pretend to have the energy to do the voices that she loves. Or maybe go home to an empty house. A damned house. And maybe he will dread tomorrow but be powerless to stop it from coming. To know the worst is arriving but to have no power to fix it.

I slid forty dollars into his hand, "Have a nice night."

The magic of the empire state building engulfed me. I reminded myself the reason I was here. The front doors led directly into the lobby.

"Miss," the doorman beconed me to the side, "I was instructed you give this to you."

He held out a marching itinerary with one word highlighted. Top.

I grinned and knew exactly where I needed to go. The elevator dinged and the windy air hit me.

"You look breathing Cleo Briscoe," he smiled in a very crooked way at me.

"Thank you," I responded, taking in the blankets and the food.

"A picnic on the empire state building, you've really stepped up from marching towers."

He grabbed my hand and led me to one of the purple bean bags. "Yep, we needed a change of scenery, just don't question the legality of it. It really helps to have connections."

I grinned, still hesitant to believe this was actually hapoening. He popped the tab of a crush soda and passed it to me.

"So how was your secret adventure today," he raised his eyebrows but I could hear the true wondering in his voice.

"It was useful," I shrugged, "but I don't want to talk about it."

I saw his face fall

"Jay I love you and this night is for us."

He reluctantly accepted this answer.

"What are we Cleo?" He asked after several moments of silence and bites if ravioli.

"I don't know, you know how I feel about loving you. Jay I want us to be together, I want to love you and I want everything to be ok. I miss the way we used to be. We can't keep pretending like we're the same people though."

He laced his fingers through mine. "Jay, Seth's death changed both of us. I want to make this work."

He grinned even wider than I thought possible, "Ok I'll keep that in mind."

"Ok."

"What do you think happens when we die?" I readjusted my head on his lap.

"I don't know Cleo Cleo. Because of my dad and Seth I want to believe that there's someone who loves and is caring for them. I just can't."

"I don't know," I said calmly, "I believe that when I die-" the grip on my hand tightened, "that I will see Seth again. I know that he's out there somewhere."

He sighed, the insanity and exaustion of the day finally catching up to us. He played with my fingers, "I want to believe in something."

I sat up and kissed him, "I believe in us."
