His True Identity
Flashback
Eight to nine months ago...
It's a rainy day and has just Hana come out of a clothing store.
"I hope that Gemmy likes these tennis shoes." She says with a smile, thinking about how Seol Hui's current pair tennis shoes have worn out.
She then opens her blue umbrella and makes her way back to the dorm. After walking for a while, she sees a young man in her path. He sits hunched over on a bench while getting soaking wet from the rain.
"Oh no! He's going to get sick!"
She hurries over to him and sees a cut on his hand also noticing his bruised fist. She goes into her purse and takes out a band aid and puts it over the cut. She then takes out a butterscotch and places it in his hand. And lastly, she places her umbrella over him.
"Please take care of yourself. When you're feeling depressed, don't sit in the rain or get into fights. Just have a butterscotch instead, okay?"
Not waiting for a reply, she puts her arm over her head and hurries away, unaware that Gyeok-chan finally looks up and watches her leave.
End of Flashback
"I didn't expect to meet again like this..." Hana says to Gyeok-chan as they both sit on the same bench where they first met. "Umm, thank you for returning my umbrella." She is about to bow until he stops her.
"Don't thank me. I should be thanking you for that day... I had gotten into a fight with my...friend and ran. I didn't stop and until I found this bench. It started raining and I didn't care... But then you showed up. You really managed to cheer me up with your help. I got a cold that day, but it was worth it." He says with a small smile and Hana smacks his arm. "Hey! What was that for?!"
"Don't get sick again and stop fighting with your friends!" Hana scolds him with a stern look that he finds adorable.
"But a good thing came out of it though. I got to meet someone like you who showed me kindness while everyone else just walked past me. You were the only one to care..." He says with a small smile. "But what about you? I felt bad for taking your umbrella and you were already gone. You didn't get sick, did you?"
"I got a cold too." She answers with a nod. "But someone helped me out too just like I did for you. After I left you, I came across this dove who had a broken wing. I was trying to help it and some guy came up to me and covered with his jacket. He promised to take care of the dove in my place and told me to hurry back home."
"...Is helping others a habit of yours?"
"I can't help it." She answers with a pout.
"Instead of focusing so much on other's needs, how about you focus on yourself. You seemed really upset about something when I saw you." He says in a worried tone.
"...I had a bad day today. Something happened with my...parents but I rather not talk about it... My best friend is being kicked out of our dorm because someone that I considered a close friend snitched on us. We were trying to help out someone close to us with their problem and she told the hall director. After that I ran out of my dormitory because I couldn't take much more of it... And throughout all this, my boyfriend hasn't called not once. I know he's going through some things right now but... I really miss him."
Hearing the mention of her having a boyfriend, he hides his jealousy by giving her a straight face.
"...She's not a real friend then. You were you trying to help someone that you care for so she shouldn't have betrayed you if she considered you a friend. As for your boyfriend..." He looks away from her and sighs. "Maybe he will contact you soon. You're a great girl so I'm sure that it's hard for him staying away from you for too long."
"Thanks." She smiles when getting up from the seat. "I feel a little better now."
"It's the least I could do for. You helped me so I helped you." He says and stands up as well. "I was just glad that I was able to find you after all this time. I will be leaving soon, and I was hoping to return your umbrella to you."
"Oh, you're leaving too?" Hana asks while pouting. "Just when I thought I got a new friend."
"We can still be friends." He says, forgetting about his mission and how he will never see her again after this.
"Really?!" He laughs at her excitement. "Hey, did you like the butterscotch?"
He nods. "It helped me with my cold."
She smiles and takes out the bag of butterscotch that she received from her secret admirer out her purse and gives him some candies.
"I see the start of a beautiful friendship, Channy." She holds out her hand for him to shake.
"Channy?" He asks with a confused look.
"It's your nickname! We're friends now so you have to accept it!" She explains, making him smile.
"Nice to make your acquaintance, Nanny." He says, shaking her hand.
She lets out a gasp. "No! I hate that nickname!"
"Why? You're always taking care more of everyone else than yourself, right? So, that nickname suits you perfectly don't you think?" He asks, smirking.
"No! I refuse to accept that nickname!" She whines and stomps her foot.
"Hana!"
"Hanny, where are you?!"
"Oh, it's my friends!" Recognizing them as Young Ro and Hye Ryung's voices.
"You should get going then. I'm sure your friends are worried." He then takes his leave and stops to look back at her. "It was nice finally meeting you again after all this time, Nanny!"
"It's Room 207 at Hosu Women's University Dormitory, if you ever you want to write a letter! Hope to hear from you again, Channy! Thanks again for my umbrella! And stop calling me that!" She shouts back at him.
They wave goodbye to each other with a smile. After he is gone from her sight, the girls arrive.
"Hanny!" Young Ro runs over to Hana and engulfs her in a hug. "I was so worried!"
"Yah! You scared the life out of me! I didn't see you back in our dorm and then the girls come to tell me that you were gone! Don't you ever do that again." Hye Ryung snaps, joining in on the hug.
"Sorry, Roro. Sorry, Teddy." Hana says, hugging them back. "Roro? I'm sorry about-"
"Don't. It's not your fault, okay?" Young Ro attempts gently pats her twin's back.
Hye Ryung feels something poking her and pulls back from the hug. Her eyes widened seeing the umbrella.
"Is that...? You got it back?!" She asks in a surprised tone.
Hana smiles and nods. "I just met with him!"
"...Was it Soo-ho?" Young Ro asks with a hopeful look, and Hana shakes her head.
"Damn." Hye Ryung mutters, her and Young Ro disappointed by the answer.
"His name is Gyeok-chan. He's my new friend."
"...Is he hot?" Hye Ryung asks with a raised eyebrow.
"Unnie!" Young Ro gives her a shocked look.
"What? I'm trying to make sure that Soo-ho doesn't have any competition." Hye Ryung wraps her arm around Hana's shoulders. "...He didn't show any interest in you, did he?"
"Hmm... I don't think so. He is a nice-looking man, but I only have eyes for my Soosoo. And Channy is leaving soon anyway but he may write."
"What?! Hana, tell me you didn't give him our room number!" Hye Ryung gives the younger girl a look of disbelief when she nods her head. "What about Soo-ho?! Don't you think he'll get jealous?!"
"He's my new friend and he helped cheer me up! Soosoo would understand! Besides, Channy isn't my only male friend."
"You're so annoying!" Hye Ryung groans.
"You're so lovable!" Hana giggles.
Young Ro laughs at the two's antics. "Now that we've found Hana, we should hurry back."
"Ooh, let's ask Ms. Oh if she can make rice cakes when we get back!" Hana suggests, thinking of her twin's favorite snack.
"...Thanks, Hanny." Young Ro says with a smile.
As the trio makes their way back to the dorm, Hye Ryung speaks up.
"...I'm still holding onto Soo-ho being the secret admirer though." She says making the twins laugh.
When the trio returns to the dorm, they are ambushed by very concerned dormitory girls who question Hana about where she's been and even look her over for injuries. After reassuring them all, the crowd dissipates and return to what they were doing before. However, before the trio can go back to their dorm, Ms. Pi calls for the younger girl.
"Hana, I understand that you're upset but you can't just leave like that. Your mother is on the phone right now-"
"I'm not accepting calls from them. It's not like they're my real parents." Hana mutters, shocking not only Young Ro but Ms. Pi as well.
Hye Ryung sighs and hurries after the younger girl. Young Ro bows to the older woman before going after them. Ms. Pi lets out a deep sigh, closing her eyes.
The Room 207 girls decide to have a party due to it being Young Ro's last night there. The older girls all have soju while Hana has chocolate milk.
"Cheers!" The girls say as they clink the cups together.
As Hana feeds Young Ro a rice cake, Hye Ryung watches the two with a sad expression.
"I'm sorry, Young Ro. That you have to leave while we stay." Hye Ryung says, placing her hand on Young Ro's.
"Don't be, Hye Ryung. I should be saying sorry. Because of me, you can't even get phone calls." Young Ro replies in a sad tone.
"You think that I care about that? Why did you have to take all the blame for yourself?! You weren't the only one who chose to help Soo-ho!" Hye Ryung snaps at the younger girl.
"...How else was I going to repay you and Hana for these past five years?" Young Ro says, looking back and forth at Hye Ryung and Hana. "Besides, I owed Hana for what she did for me last time when I went to go get my brother's suit for Soo-ho."
"Roro, that was nothing. That mean old lady forced me into my itch mode, so she had it coming." Hana mutters.
"Have you decided where to go?" Seol Hui asks on the verge of tears and Young Ro nods.
"Your cousin's house?" Jeongmin asks.
"...My father's house."
"...Huh?! Roro, no!"
"Yah, Young Ro! Are you serious?! Why would you go back to that shitty father after everything he did to you?!" Hye Ryung yells, giving the younger girl a look of disbelief.
"Your father lives in Seoul? You two knew about him?" Jeongmin questions the girls.
"...When my mother passed away ten years ago, he married this really annoying woman. Since then, I lived with my grandma in the countryside." Young Ro explains.
"I feel so bad for you, Young Ro." Seol Hui says as she begins to cry.
"Don't cry, Gemmy." Hana comforts Seol Hui while wiping away her tears with a tissue.
"Come on." Young Ro claps. "I'm alright. I'll be glad if I lose weight from walking on eggshells. Cheers." She says, holding up her cup.
The rest of them pick of the cups and clink them together again.
"...I first met Hana back in high school." Young Ro says, smiling at the younger girl. "She was passing around her butterscotch candies and when I approached her, she noticed that we were wearing the same hair bow. We had the same classes so that made it easier for us to get to know each other. Once we realized that we had the same interests and such, we became not only best friends but twins. She introduced me to Hye Ryung who became like an older sister to me." Hye Ryung blinks her eyes to hold back her tears. "And Hee Tae, well...he's..."
"First love and future husband." Hana finishes for her and giggles when she gets tickled. "You're not denying it though!"
"...Ever since we moved into the dorm, I've made new friends and got two more big sisters. I have been really happy living with you all. Thank you guys so much for everything. I mean it."
"Roro." Hana's voice cracks as she is about to cry. "Take my teddy with you with you, okay?"
"Huh?" Young Ro blinks a few times. "But Soo-ho won that for you from open house!"
"And the teddy that Hee Tae won for you is my teddy's twin. We're already getting separated so we can't separate them too. One pair of twins has to stay together..." Hana sniffles and begins crying.
Hye Ryung also starts sobbing and is the first one to get up and hug Young Ro. Seol Hui finally loses it and bawls her eyes out. She then joins in on the hug.
"Hey, stop crying." Young Ro tries to calm them both down and looks at her crying twin. "Hanny, come here."
"Roro, I don't want you to go!" Hana's cries get louder as she joins the group hug.
"I'll come visit you often." Young Ro tries to reassure Hana, patting her back. "And we'll still see each other since we all go to the same school. Please don't cry."
"It's not the same!"
Young Ro sighs. "Where's Soo-ho when you need him? He would have been able to calm you three down."
Jeongmin gets up from her seat and turns away from them, covering her eyes with her arm.
During the night, Hana decides to sleep with Young Ro in her bed. While the others are asleep, only Young Ro is still awake, sitting at the desk. She looks at Hana then at dove necklace that she's wearing.
Young Ro sighs and takes a piece of paper to write...
How could you not call her?
How could you not tell the rest of us that you were going back to Germany?
I'm getting kicked out of the dorm tomorrow, so I have one request to ask of you.
She's not allowed to receive calls from anyone other than her parents now. And you can't come back to the dorm. So how about you call for me or one of the others and ask to see her? That way, we can help you two meet.
Please do this. She's having a hard time because something happened with her parents and me being kicked out... And I can tell that she misses you.
She makes a paper plane out of it and throws it out the window. She then looks over at Hana's snow globe and picks it up to shake it.
In his hideout, Soo-ho eats one of the butterscotch candies that Hana left for him in Young U's suit jacket. He sighs at the thought of his girl.
Flashback
"Hana-ya..." Soo-ho takes Hana's hand in his and rubs it with his thumb. "There are so many things that I want to tell you. But I'm afraid that you won't want anything more to do with me if you knew."
"Then don't tell me until you're ready to. Remember the promise I just made to you?" She cups his face and squishes his cheeks. "I will always be by your side no matter what, my Soosoo! For now, let's party until it never ends! Ooh, let's start with the robot dance!"
"Hana." He takes notice of her red face and removes her hands from his face so he can speak properly. "Are you drunk already?"
"Hmm... What do you think?" She answers with a giggle when picking up a soju bottle.
"Hana, give me that!" He tries to grab the bottle from his drunk girlfriend.
"No!" She giggles and hiccups. "It's our anniversary and we have to celebrate!"
"And we can still do that if you give me the bottle."
"This is my first drink in... Umm... I forgot how long. But Teddy had forbidden me from ever drinking again since the incident!"
"I can see why. You're a lightweight." He says, managing to finally take the bottle from her.
"How could you say that?" She asks, pouting.
"Because you had one drink." He answers, gently bopping her nose. "What kind of mischief did you cause in your drunkenness?"
"It actually took me days to remember what had happened but... It was my very first drink and Hee Tae was drunk too. Hye Ryung had to take care of both of us, so she got really grumpy...and it got worse when we used her as a shield to cover ourselves from the water that a car sent our way." She explains, sending him into a fit of laughter.
"You sure put Hye Ryung through a lot, don't you?" He asks, gently bopping her nose.
She giggles and falls back so that her head rests on his lap.
He sighs then chuckles. "What am I going to do with you?"
"Hmm... Ooh, I know! Since you sang for me, I'll sing for you!" She says with excitement in her voice and clears her throat.
You gave me hope
When I needed someone near
You bring me happiness
Every day of every year
And I'll always love you
For all that you are
She sings and he stiffens from a certain word she just sang.
You have made my life complete
You're my lucky star
-I'll Always Love You by Taylor Dayne
"Happy anniversary... I love you, my Soosoo. Do you love me?" Hana mumbles and falls asleep.
He stares at her longingly for a moment and brushes her hair away from her face.
"...I'll give you my answer soon. I promise." He speaks quietly before leaning down and gently kissing her forehead.
End of Flashback
The next day after Soo-ho has gotten the weapons and money hidden in the dead drop at Mount Ogong, he sees a paper airplane in the fence bordering the Hosu' dormitory. He grabs it and unfolds it to see that it's a letter from Young Ro. After reading it, he looks at the dorm with a conflicted expression and sighs.
"Hey, where did Seol Hui go?" Young Ro asks her roommates.
"She had to go downstairs to meet with someone." Jeongmin answers.
"Byung Tae has a car. He will help transporting your things, okay?" Hye Ryung informs Young Ro while helping her pack her things.
"Thank you. It'll be an easy trip thanks to you."
"I never knew your fiancé would be this useful." Jeongmin teases Hye Ryung who frowns at her.
"I'm sure that Soo-ho will come to see you." Young Ro says to Hana who is fiddling with her necklace. She sighs when Hana doesn't say anything. "...Do you want to talk about it now? Your parents? Hee Tae?"
"...I don't know what to say honestly." Hana answers with a sad expression.
"They might have their reasons. You should hear them out, especially Hee Tae. You know how much he loves you. He probably just didn't know how to tell you." Young Ro tells her, wrapping her arm around her shoulders.
"Of course, you would defend your future husband." Hana mutters, making Young Ro gasp.
"Hanny!" Young Ro then smacks Hana's shoulder.
"Hey! I'm just stating facts!" Hana sticks her tongue out at her. "Is this the thanks I get for setting you two up?"
"Hey, what's this tape?" Jeongmin asks, interrupting the twins.
"Oh! I hadn't listened to that yet!" Hana says, taking the tape from her. "...It's from my secret admirer."
"WHAT?!" Her roommates shout with shocked looks on their faces.
"Apparently he stopped by to see ajumma. He left her a bag of butterscotch candy and this cassette tape so she could give it to me. I'm supposed to understand once I listen to it."
"Hey. Listen to it right now." Hye Ryung takes the tape from Hana and is about to put it in the radio until they all hear a commotion coming from downstairs.
The girls' glance at each other with confused looks and they all hurry out of the room. Before Hana follows after them, she takes the tape and hides it inside her pillow. Before she puts the pillow back down, she sees a lot of butterscotch candy on the bed.
"Oh... They gave me extra candy..." Hana mumbles, surprised to see all the candy she got.
After she puts her pillow back, she runs out of the room and once she gets downstairs, she is unable to believe the sight she sees before her...
Soo-ho dressed in all black, pointing a gun at the ANSP agents.
"Oh my god..." Jeongmin whispers with a look of disbelief on your face.
"You damn bastard." Hye Ryung snaps at Soo-ho, angry by the fact that he lied to all of them.
"...I'm sorry." He whispers before grabbing Young Ro who is closer to him and points his gun at her head causing all the girls to scream.
"Lim Soo-ho!" The ANSP leader yells but Soo-ho doesn't back down.
"...Soosoo?" She whispers but somehow it was like he still was able to hear her. The voice of the girl he thinks about every day and wants to spend the rest of his life with.
When they make eye contact, his heart nearly breaks seeing the way that she looks at him. She sheds a tear, feeling heartbroken by the man that she fell in love with...turned out to really be a North Korean spy.
You betrayed me in the worst possible way
You changed everything from that moment
Was it all just a lie? Was I just a part of your mission?
The pain that I was feeling was threatening to tear my heart into a million tiny pieces
That's it. The end of episode four. The moment we've all been waiting for. WE ARE HERE.
Sorry! I was hoping to have this done sooner but I got a bit of writer's block for a couple of scenes.
Hana and Soo-ho's relationship is going to be filled with tension, but that chemistry is going to become even stronger! Ooh, as messed up as it is things are just going to be waaaay more romantic than before!
We had the first "I love you"... I wasn't planning on doing this until much later, but I was like screw it. Why not? And Hana doesn't even remember confessing! Oops...
Also, I want to mention that Hana and Gyeok-chan's first meeting was inspired by a Japanese movie called Honey. It came out back in 2018. That scene came to me around the time I started this book and I thought it would be perfect! I was still debating whether it would be Soo-ho or Gyeok-chan. I ultimately decided on Gyeok-chan as I have other plans for Soo-ho, hehe...
Gave you a little more backstory on Hana and Young Ro's friendship. I know it's different from what happened in the show, but I feel it was necessary for Hye Ryung to also know Young Ro's identity since she knows Hana's family. Especially for what happens much later thanks to certain snitches, if you remember what I'm talking about. What do you think?
I did change up the paper airplane scene a bit. I chose to stick with Young Ro doing it as she did in the show. Instead, she sends it out the night before the big event and in a way it's her wanting her favorite ship to come together again.
And the cassette tape that her secret admirer left for her... It's going to be a while till Hana gets to hear what's on it. Sorry!
And just who is putting this butterscotch candy under her pillow? Hmm...
We're finally going to be getting more scenes with Nam Tae-il finally and I'm very excited for this big argument that I have planned between him and Hee Tae!
