Appa & Little Butterscotch
"My little butterscotch grew up just as beautiful as her mother." Il-sung says smiling, getting up from his seat.
"Is... Is this real?" Hana mumbles and lightly pinches his cheek.
He chuckles and gently pinches her back. "Pinch yourself not me."
She gasps and he laughs at her reaction. "How is this possible?! Wait... I am high?! Did all that butterscotch finally get to me?!"
"Oh? Then you must not want any of that?" He points at their table with a smirk and the sight of what's on it nearly makes Hana fall over. "Butterscotch candy. Butterscotch cake. Butterscotch cookies. I don't think I can eat all of this by myself, and you shouldn't eat any of it if you think that you're high... It's a shame that this will go all to waste. Better start cleaning-"
"NO! I WANT IT!" She shouts with a crazed look.
He laughs watching his daughter quickly take a seat and begins eating the butterscotch cake. He takes the seat across from her and grabs a cookie, taking a bite out of it.
"Enjoy. Consider these as thanks for all the butterscotch candy you left me every time you visited." He tells her with a smile.
"You... But-But how? How is this possible?" She asks, still amazed by what's happening.
"I'm here because you know the truth now and I haven't seen you in a while... But it's also because you wanted it." He explains, passing her a butterscotch candy. "Let's use this time to talk while we can."
"Then why this place? Rome Coffee Shop?"
"This isn't only Soo-ho and your special place, it's your mother and I's as well. It's where she and I first met. She knocked over my matchstick tower and instead of getting an apology, I got slapped. It was love at first slap..." He sighs. "I could never tell whether it was an honor or not to be the only man she pinched and called a bonehead."
"Huh? Eomma called you a bonehead?! And she pinched only you?! Wow... I take a lot after her than I thought." She murmurs before putting the butterscotch candy in her mouth.
"Except Soo-ho is the only man you've never called a butthead or pinched. He's a lucky one... He managed to survive after all." He says the latter with a relieved smile.
She nods with a big smile. "After they left the South, his sister and him were taken in by a man named Lim Ji-rok who took good care of them. Once he was old enough, Soo-ho became a soldier. Gyeok-chan too. You chose them as my bodyguards but it's more like I've become theirs. They're always fighting with each other or getting shot at."
"They're doing well... I'm glad." He laughs as he blinks to hold back his tears. "It still must have been hard for you all but I'm glad that you have each other."
"It has been hard... But eomma had it more tough than the rest of us." She murmurs sadly.
"...Sunny has always been a strong woman. It's one of the reasons why I fell for her. I always felt bad that she got involved with me... But I'm happy that you found each other again."
"...Know what else was found?" She smiles as he raises an eyebrow. She then reaches into her pocket and takes out the bracelet. "Soo-ho tried to get it back to you but it was too late, so he held onto it all this time. And Gyeok-chan returned your necklace and I gave it back to eomma."
He lets out a quiet laugh. "That kid is something else. Give him my thanks for me, will you? Same with Gyeok-chan."
"Okay... Is it okay? That I fell for Soosoo?" She asks hesitantly.
"Hana. I made the decision to save North Koreans who didn't deserve to die because of the actions caused by others. What do you think?" He reaches across the table and holds her hand. "I'm happy that you found love. All I ever wanted for you was for you to find what makes you happy... But overall, I'm happy that it was someone of my choosing."
"Hey! So you picked Soo-ho and Gyeok-chan not only as my bodyguards but as potential suitors?!" She questions her father with a accusing glare that only looks adorable to him.
"Oh? Is Soo-ho not perfect for you?" He asks with a teasing smirk. "From what you told me during your visits, he sounded like he's practically your soulmate."
"...You have a point." She mutters with a pout and he laughs, picking up the bracelet.
"I always meant to give you this bracelet once you were a little older...but now you're old enough. How time has passed..." He gently pulls her hand towards him so that he can put the bracelet around her wrist. "...I'm sorry that I couldn't be there for you while you were growing up, spoil you with butterscotch, protect you from your mean mother and watch you up on that stage... I missed a lot, didn't I?"
"It's not your fault that you weren't able to be there... It's..." She murmurs, looking down to hide her crestfallen look. "If it hadn't been for him-"
"Look at me." She does as he says and tears up seeing the big smile on his face. "Just think of it as I still got to be part of your life. All the visits, you telling me about your life and giving me butterscotch candy... I got to see my little butterscotch grow up into an amazing young woman. Don't you know how proud I am of you?"
"Appa." She sniffles as her eyes glisten with tears.
"Hyung had some good moments throughout our lives, but it still doesn't change the bad ones... I hate to say this about him, but some things just can't be forgiven... His karma is catching up with him. Whatever happens, happens. It's not your fault, okay?"
"Why didn't you leave him? Eomma told me that you guys lived in Germany for a while. Why didn't you just stay there? If you had kept your distance from him-"
"I once did consider cutting him out of my life. It was nice being in Germany with your mother and not deal with my hyung's hatred towards me... But there was still a part of me longing to have a brotherly bond with him." He explains with sad eyes. "Sometimes I wonder if my methods were wrong. I thought by returning home after earning the position of director of the ANSP, I could make things better. I genuinely did want to change their horrific system, but I also thought by doing so it would knock some sense into him. I knew he would be jealous that I got the position and not him but still..."
"...You did what you thought best. You were a good younger brother that he just didn't deserve." She reassures him making him slowly smile.
"You're right. Besides if I hadn't made those decisions, then you wouldn't have met Soo-ho. Who would have saved him and the others if I hadn't returned? Make sure you give your mother and I lots of grandchildren." He says the last part with a smirk.
"Appa!" She looks away embarrassed.
All of a sudden, the entrance to the cafe opens and there's a bright light outside.
"Looks like our time is up..." He sighs. "I have to get going soon."
"Huh?! No!" She quickly gets up from her seat. "I don't want you to go! Can't you just stay here? You didn't get to talk to eomma! She hasn't said it, but I can tell that she misses you so much!"
He sighs and gets up then wraps his arms around her, gently patting the back of her head.
"I know that she does. I miss her just as much. But she and I will be together again one day. She knows that I'm waiting for her in the afterlife. She still has a long life to live until we're reunited. Until then, you take care of her for me... And remind her that she owes me some butterscotch and I'm still checking in on her every now and then." He pulls back and gives her another big smile while wiping away her tears. "I love you both."
He steps back and walks away from her, heading towards the entrance. Before he steps into the light, he looks back at her once more.
"We love you too. I'll visit your shrine soon. I'll bring eomma, Soo-ho and Gyeok-chan with me too. I promise." She says, tearfully waving at him.
He gives her one last tearful smile and waves back before stepping into the light.
"What the...?" Soo-ho mumbles being awoken from his sleep.
"Sorry! We just couldn't resist." Young Ro says, giggling.
"You two look so cute!" Seol Hui says then her giggling soon comes to a stop. "Hana! You're crying!"
Soo-ho's eyes widened and quickly takes his girlfriend's face in his hands. "What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"
She shakes her head and gives him a sad smile. Then her eyes widened when she looks down at her wrist.
"Hmm? When did you put that on?" He asks noticing the bracelet. "You weren't wearing it before we fell asleep."
"I didn't... Appa put it on me."
She giggles at everyone's confused expressions and wraps her arms around Soo-ho's waist.
"He's very happy that you survived and wanted me to give you his thanks for returning the bracelet. He also gives his blessing on our relationship and..." She whispers.
"And...?" He asks with a raised eyebrow.
"...He wants lots of grandchildren." She whispers and pulls away as her face begins to turn red.
He slowly smirks and pulls her back into another hug. "Maybe we should practice again?" He whispers into her ear.
"Soosoo!" She squeals, trying to get out of his grip as he laughs.
"What are those two talking about?" Seol Hui asks, watching the couple with curiosity.
Young Ro shrugs and smiles. "Who knows? I'm just happy that they're happy."
"And that's what had happened." Hana finishes explaining her dream to her mother. "Oh! Appa also said that he's still checking in on you every now and then. And you owe him some butterscotch."
Seung Hee stares at her with her usual unreadable expression and pulls her into a hug.
"Eomma?"
"...Thank you." Seung Hee says, her voice shaking with emotion.
Hana smiles and hugs her mother back.
Special chapter dedicated to the father and daughter... What did you all think?
I wanted to have this done sooner but I got a little distracted because I was working on my other kdrama books! I'm so excited for those!
Hana thinking she was high from seeing her father, got inspired by weirdoincorner1917! Couldn't help myself! I wanted to add in a part where Hye Ryung heard all this then takes Hana's butterscotch and throws it off the roof! Maybe I'll get a chance to do something like that next time! We'll see!😂
By the way... How many kids do you think Soona will have?
Reminder! The dream took place before she reunited with Tae-il and the explanation she gave her mother took place shortly before the SWAT team broke in.
I still can't believe that this book is almost done. Episode fourteen will be next... Thank you for all the support.
