Chapter 6. Following Hearts?
First's POV:
I had just woken up from a small nap I took in the evening. Though I felt a bit dizzy, it was normal for a bar owner like me. I drank every day. Of course, I wasn't in my greatest health.
But that wasn't my concern... at all. The first thing my mind went to when I woke up was not the headache, it was rather a headache but a different type. Khaotung had called me the other day and strangely there was no sound coming from the other side. I could hear murmurs but it wasn't clear. The only thing I could hear properly was the wind blowing.
Yesterday was a bad weather day. It was raining almost the whole day and when it wasn't, there was a really strong wind blowing. When I picked up the phone, I heard Khao pronounce my name but nothing else could be heard from this side.
Maybe he had called me accidentally?
Why would he say my name if it was accidental?
Maybe 'cause he was outside so he couldn't be heard from the strong wind?
Wow... before I realized, I was once again occupied with thoughts about him. I never liked to think too much. To me, overthinking didn't help the betterment of anything. Now, here I was. Overthinking about things that could be simply accidental.
The first day I met Khaotung was an unexpected day. Though the arrival of him wasn't unexpected, the phase I was in was. I'd always heard his name in newspapers, TV and from just other people's mouths. But it didn't intrigue me so I didn't stop to see his face anytime.
The day he came to the bar was the first time I had actually seen his face. How did I know it was him? Because he looked different. Way different than the others in the bar. I mean, who wears a blazer to a bar anyways?
His dark coloured clothes would have made anyone completely disappear into the crowd in the dark blue light but his pale milk skin made him stand out as if he didn't belong there. He looked lost but I knew that he was staring at me.
I could see that most people in the bar recognized him but somehow were scared of him. He did look intimidating but that was anything but scary. His hair was perfectly styled, he wore a loose shirt underneath the blazer, his skin looked perfect and glossy. He looked open yet so mysterious, cute yet hot.
Though I approached him almost immediately, not wanting to let go of someone who had finally caught my interest after years, I still was afraid to know what he was thinking at that exact time.
Maybe he was staring at me because I looked like the owner? I seemed friendly? Or was he actually interested in me? I didn't know. But what I did know was that I definitely was interested.
The last time I'd been in a relationship was a long time ago. I was 19. With my newly profound sexuality, I was eager to explore and find someone. But when I thought I found that someone, he cheated on me just 2 months after the relationship had started.
Realization hit me. Maybe I shouldn't have tried to settle down too soon. After all, you only live once. I'd never get back to youth.
Or at least, that's what I tried to convince myself to calm down. After being in denial for 3 years, I could finally be who I was. So I decided to seize the chance and live my life.
I opened that bar and stopped running after life. Instead, I let life run after me. It had become my habit.
Everyday I had the same routine. Go to university, come back, spend some time, go and manage the bar, drink, have a one night stand once in a while and get back home. Both guys and girls had found me attractive and I had a lot of one night stands. Though I never agreed to be a full time fling of anyone, people kept asking me... to the point when I stopped finding one night stands fun anymore.
It'd been a year since I'd stopped having one night stands because deep down, I knew I just wanted to settle down. I was tired with that life of mine. At that point, my love life and sexual life had been asleep for almost a year now... until that man walked in that day.
Mystery. The word that always intrigued me and dragged me to get out of my dreamland. Detectives are entangled in mystery. I knew that. I've read countless stories of Sherlock Holmes. But who would've thought that a simple detective would be the one to get me back on track with my life?
And before I knew it, the only thing I thought about all day long was Khaotung. Though there was a comparatively small part of me that thought about the case and its captivation, somehow it was still connected to Khaotung.
And thanks to this case, for getting us so close. But now a few fears worked up inside me. First, the case... He's looking deeper into the case. What if he found out that...
Second, if he found out the secret of that case or gave up, would he continue to come to the bar? Or would he forget that the bar and me ever existed?
For the first fear, I couldn't do anything about it. But for the second fear to vanish, one thing, I had to be brave and honest and face that fear.
Yes, I was still in bed, thinking and planning about all of that. But I had finally come to the conclusion that I would face it. I would express my honest feelings before it's too late and even if he didn't feel the same way, there'd be nothing to regret.
I finally took my phone out to check the time. '7:17' it said. The bar would open at Eight. I hurriedly got up from the bed when I remembered something. I needed to clean the bar before opening. There was a big birthday celebration party arranged at the bar the other day and the bar hadn't been cleaned since.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
It was pretty cloudy that day. Though it was not raining like the other day. Khaotung had arrived in front of the bar. It was almost 10 at night.
The minute Khaotung entered the bar, all eyes were suddenly on him. Everyone looked at him strangely as if he hadn't been a regular customer there for the past few months.
Khaotung didn't really mind the attention so he just decided to walk in and find what he was there for-or who he was there for. First called him a few minutes ago to ask if he was going to come to the bar or not-which was quite strange for First to do so there had to be a reason.
Even though the bar was usually crowded, that day it seemed even more crowded... as if there was a special event and the bar owner had called so many people himself.
Khaotung looked around to search for First but he was nowhere to be found. The manager and the bartenders were all there but the owner wasn't. Usually, First never left his bar alone with people so it was strange... weirdly strange.
After not seeing any glimpse of First, Khaotung took a seat on the stool next to the counter, concerned. He was about to ask the bartender about First when a girl approached him. She seemed really drunk. And it seemed like her friends pushed her towards him.
"Hello handsome... Can you take care of our friend? She's heartbroken," one of the girl's friends said and pushed her towards Khaotung. Before Khaotung could open his mouth, the friends went far away from them. Khaotung sighed and gently placed the overly drunk girl on the stool next to him.
"Thank... you..," the girl yelled so loudly it echoed through the bar.
"Don't yell," Khaotung advised calmly as he held her back with his hand so she didn't fall.
"I'm Fah. What's your name?" The girl asked, her voice still loud but calmer than the first time.
"I'm Khaotung," Khaotung whispered as to not match the tone and sound the girl was making.
"Why are you so shy?" The girl asked.
Rolling his eyes, Khaotung replied calmly, "Because your friend randomly pushed you to me and now you're being loudly embarrassing."
"Arrogant..," The girl expressed. Before Khaotung could say more, the girl began telling her story about her relationship. Unwillingly, Khaotung listened. Apparently, the girl got cheated on. And the guy cheated on her with her best friend. That's not even the wild part. Her best friend is a guy and her boyfriend broke up with her, saying that he liked men and couldn't love her like that.
Khaotung didn't understand why she was upset. The guy found his true identity and left. She should've been happy for him. But then slowly, he found out that Fah didn't actually like the guy at all. She's just a gold-digger.
Though Khaotung didn't say much, Fah seemed to like his calm and shy personality. Because the minute she finished her story, she immediately started leaning to kiss Khaotung. And before he could process, her lips were already on his.
That's when First came into the bar, his immediate response was shock. Because he stood there, trying to understand until he saw Khaotung almost immediately push the girl away.
"What do you think you're doing?" Khaotung asked, his face almost burning with anger. It wasn't like he wasn't attracted to girls. He was, but not those types of girls, who didn't even ask for consent before kissing someone.
First still stood at the door, quite impressed by Khaotung's reaction. Hearing Khaotung yell, the girl's friends ran up to him, asking what was up. "Get your friend. She's trying to kiss me without my consent," Khaotung said to her friends.
The friend's expression immediately changed as if he was the one wrong for pushing her. "You're lucky she even gave you a glance," One of the friends murmured while another one the friend held Fah's shoulder and responded, giving Khaotung a look of disgust.
"Let's go somewhere else." The girl twitched her mouth.
Khaotung was totally unbothered by her friend's words and turned around to see First standing there. "First..," his expression changed into guilt. "Sorry for having chased your customers..," he expressed.
First nodded with a slight smile. "It's okay. They deserved it," he muttered and Khaotung's smile grew. He liked how proud First looked of him.
. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .
"Where have you been?" Khaotung asked as he sat on a stool right next to First. First smiled brightly. Once again, Khaotung felt like it was becoming daytime at night with the amount of brightness First's smile had.
"Come here." First held Khaotung's hand and dragged him up the stage.
"What are you doing?" Khaotung whispered to First while everyone was staring at them on the stage.
"Answering your question," First murmured and then held his hand out to take something out of the manager's hand. "I had gone to bring these." In his hand, there were two lily flowers. In a previous conversation, Khaotung had discussed that he really liked lilies with First and he went to buy those.
"First..," Khaotung whispered, looking around at the crowd.
"Ignore them," First whispered back to Khaotung and he stopped glancing at the crowd in an attempt to avoid.
"Tung... I've liked you since the moment you walked into this bar and I don't want to lose you. I know you might not have that much time for dating but I really can't handle the fact that you won't have any reason to be coming here anymore once you're done with this case. Since the moment we first met, you've captured all the space in my mind. I can't think about anything else anymore," First explained.
Khaotung's bright smile was completely visible at that point. He, himself, had never felt that way with anyone before. Being a detective was his dream since childhood and he had rather focused on his dream, studies than dating and happiness all his life. But he finally had the chance so he wanted to try.
"Khaotung..," before First could say more, Khaotung put his index finger over First's lips.
"Shh... I know how you feel about me. And I feel the same. I really really like you. Your personality, your smile, your eyes, your lips are so soft. You're just so cute... First, will you be my boyfriend?" Khaotung asked, unknowingly making those puppy eyes that First totally despised and loved at the same time.
"Hey! That was supposed to be my line!" First brushed Khaotung's finger off of his lips.
"If you really thought I'd let you be the one to make the first move then you were very wrong." Khaotung whispered in First's ear and First could feel goosebumps forming all through his body.
"So... what's the answer?" Khaotung asked once again, getting First back to reality that all which was happening was indeed... real.
"Yes. Yes, I will," First excitedly answered and jumped like a baby. Gosh he's so cute!
The crowd in the bar was loudly cheering for them. They looked happy as ever until Khaotung's phone started ringing.
"Hello?" Khaotung picked the phone up.
"Okay. I'm coming."
Khaotung cut the call and turned to First. "First, it was a call from my office. I have to go," he said. First nodded and Khaotung walked down the stage making a path for himself through the crowd.
With a half disappointed, half expectant face, First watched Khaotung leave the bar through the crowd.
