Chapter 20. Path to the Truth
Hours had passed. Khaotung had gone from being mad to actually understanding what Jack was trying to do. But nonetheless, it was still too risky.
Letting him free was the only choice that would've left Khaotung's and his mind at ease. After all that happened with the case, they both truly needed to just relax and think about nothing else.
Yet Khaotung couldn't relax, not until he found out what Aon's true motive was, why he had started brutally killing people, why he hated the world so much that he was willing to hurt his own brother in the process, why people were getting involved with him, if there really was a gang etcetra.
Khaotung stood up from his chair and began to walk around the office. He didn't know what to do next so he called First, his comfort space, the person he looked acquaintance of when he didn't know what to do.
"First?" He called out.
"Tung?" The smile that had been gone the whole day immediately reappeared with just a word from First. The magic that man had on him...
"Did you talk to Jack?" Khao's mind came back to reality with First asking that question.
"I did. I fired him." He mumbled as a reply following up with a sigh.
"Why? Don't you like him?" First asked but the tone in his voice didn't sound surprised. He knew it was coming yet he wanted to know the reason simply. He knew Khao liked him quite as much he knew because he reminded him of himself.
"I... just can't do this anymore. Please let's just get this over with. I'm tired." Khaotung replied. He wasn't lying nor was he telling the whole truth. He was indeed tired but he just wanted some time alone from the cruel world or maybe with First.
"Okay... Tung?" First asked as if he had thought Khao wasn't listening.
"Hm?" Khao replied.
"What do you want me to help you with?" First asked, his voice suddenly dropping slightly. Was he embarrassed to ask that? Wasn't totally impossible.
"Right now, just come to the police station." Khao murmured.
"Do you want to talk to Aon about this?" First asked suddenly as if it was what he had expected. Khaotung let out a hum in response.
In a minute or two, First cut the call. He had gotten the message. Khao walked his way back to his desk and opened the second drawer of the desk.
There were a few files of the case in the drawer where Jack and him had collected some evidence and information against the victims or the suspects. Khaotung decided to go through the files once more.
The third file of the case was on top and the minute he turned the first page, a slip of information caught his eyes. It was not his handwriting. It was Jack's. The information was like this:
"Name: John Rakusay Phakhutsaphorn
Age: 27
Record: Drug dealing."
Under the piece of information was a photo attached of John in jail. And under the photo was written:
"Got in jail with the criminal records of drug dealing just 2 months ago and then bribed the officers to get out of there."
That's it! Khaotung had found the evidence to possibly blackmail John into telling the truth but would it work? He didn't know but he needed to find out.
Khaotung quickly detached that page from the file to fold it and put it in his pocket. He walked his way out of the office after taking his jacket, gun and his car keys.
Once arrived at the police station, he met with the sight of First right at the entrance. He took a deep breath and approached the man standing at the entrance gate. "First?" He stood in front. "Ready to dive in?" First asked, the same familiar smile brightening his face as he held out Khaotung's hand and barged in.
The police station was silent. They slowly made their way to John's cell first. The officers knew they'd be there as they had talked to them beforehand.
John was already at the cell's bars as if talking to Aon whose cell was right opposite his. Seeing Khaotung and First walk towards him, John totally flipped and was about to walk to the back of the dark cell when Khaotung called his name. "John..." The familiar voice called out, yet an unfamiliar hint of seriousness was in his tone. Knowing how gentle and sweet Khao actually was, John wasn't exactly used to the feeling of him talking in such a demeanor.
John turned around after letting out an unnecessarily long sigh and stood back at the bars, grabbing one bar of the cell with his left hand. Khaotung walked closer and stood right in front of John, facing him eye to eye as he grabbed First's hand tightly, who seemed quite intimidated by John's appearance.
John wore a shirt that was torn on the right arm slightly. Even though it was a green-ish shirt, the color had faded into pure gray. He also had a pair of jeans on which though weren't ripped jeans, looked like they were ripped by him on purpose right across his left leg where he was shot by First.
Khao had a feeling he had done that on purpose to make First feel guilty even though he shouldn't have. He deserved it.
"What do you want?" John asked, furrowing his eyebrows like a little kid wanting to be left alone so he could eat his candy in peace.
"Are you going to admit that you were involved with Aon?" Khaotung muttered, his eyes fixed on John while John's eyes were fixed on First as if John wanted to make him feel like he didn't belong there.
"Why would I? I wasn't," John replied, finally looking at Khao after failing to make First feel like an outsider.
"Okay... You never agree on the easy way, do you?" Khaotung mumbled as he sucked the inside of his own cheek a bit in anticipation for a few seconds before grabbing one of the cell's bars as if leaning his weight on it to help stand up while his other hand picked that folded paper out of his pocket.
Both John and First looked at Khao with anticipation yet fear was visible in their eyes as Khao unfolded the paper and slowly started reading it.
"What the hell are you doing?" John tried to yell but couldn't as he didn't want to grab the officer's attention.
"Do you want me to tell it to the commissioner that you bribed yourself out and to give you extra punishment?" Khaotung asked, the corner of his mouth folded into a sly grin and he folded the paper back.
John attempted to take the paper from his hand but he snitched and put it back in his pocket.
"Fine! I was involved," John finally admitted, resulting in a smirk from First as he took out his phone which had recorded the whole conversation slowly as if it was displayed fairly to John.
"Are you going to tell what exactly he made you do?" Khaotung asked but John shook his head silently smiling.
"You asked me to admit it, I did. That's all you're getting from me," John replied and without a second look, walked back inside the dark cell as if disappearing into the unknown.
