Chapter 18. Find out the Truth!
It's 2 at night but Khaotung was not sleeping. The case had been over then why was he not sleeping? What Aon said that day hadn't left his mind at all. He couldn't get it out of his head.
Khaotung sat on his chair, looking out the window towards the droplets of water dripping from the sky. The way the water drops fell on the grass and leaves of trees in the backyard and then dropped to the ground, leaving a simple memory of it in the process always gave Khaotung pleasure.
That's how Khaotung imagined his life. He's the leaf and people who entered his life were droplets. They came and left, leaving a faded memory in his mind but he... He was never able to leave a memory in their mind. They left him suffering alone while he was never able to leave someone else suffering because of his absence.
Would a droplet ever want to get fixed with that leaf? The chances were low but not nonexistent. Maybe he had found the droplet that at least wanted to stay with him forever.
With the swift wind, the dripping water stopped, leaving Khaotung in awe. After staring at the glass window for a while where some left droplets were racing, he brought his chair back to his desk and sat there, thinking.
"One day you'll realize that the people you call innocent people were never innocent in the first place." What Aon said that day flipped his mind upside down. What did he mean by that?
After thinking, Khaotung had understood that there was more to the case than he was let know of. He wanted to find out more. He needed to find out more. He also knew Aon did that on purpose to keep him hanging.
Not knowing what to do, Khaotung stood up and started walking around the room until his eyes landed on a jacket on his cloth's rack. It wasn't his jacket. It was Jack's.
After staring at it for a while, wondering how Jack could leave it there or what he should do with it, without thinking much, he picked up the jacket, hanging it on his arms.
For some reason, his instincts told him to check the pockets of the jacket and he did but when he put his hand inside, he realized that Aon might not have been wrong. Inside was a drug packet. So... Jack did drugs... He put his hand on the inside pocket of the jacket and found a piece of paper where the exact address of First's school was written. So... Jack did have something to do with the case all along?
Khaotung sighed and put the jacket back on the rack. He had already gotten the hint. Jack had been acting weird for a while then... suspicious even.
Khaotung took his step back to the phone, placed the drug packet and the piece of paper inside his desk's drawer. He picked up his phone and dialed his most called number, First's.
First attempt, he didn't pick up. Second attempt, failed. Third attempt, he did.
"Why are you calling so late at night, Tung?" First answered the phone and immediately started whining.
"I can't sleep," Khaotung replied as if he should be pitied for not being able to sleep.
"What's the problem now? The case is over, isn't it?" First asked but little did he know about exactly what was bothering Khao so he didn't give him the chance to answer, instead asked, "Are you thinking about what Aon said?"
"Hmm..," Khaotung hummed in response. It was obvious yet First wanted it to not be true. He wanted that whole thing to be over once and for all and never get brought up again. That whole case, his brother's accusations on him, the abuse, everything had hurt him too much, so much that he just couldn't wait to leave everything behind.
"Khaotung, I know you're worried but I think this really is over. Aon probably just said that to mess with your brain." First tried to explain but he knew neither him nor Khaotung had believed that. The moment when Aon said that, there was not only the voice of threat but also a glimpse of genuinity in his tone.
"That's not all, First. I... really think he's right," Khaotung responded. That response led First to finally wanting to know the truth even though he, at that point, was too drained emotionally to just think about anything.
"Have you found anything?" First asked, suddenly curious to know.
"I found a drug packet in Jack's jacket," Khaotung replied. It left both of them confused for a small amount of time until First spoke up.
"So... you think Jack is involved with Aon as well?" First suddenly asked as Khaotung hummed in an almost inaudible voice in response as if he was thinking deeply.
"I really need to confront him about this," Khaotung murmured in a low voice as if he was tired of talking. It was almost 3 at night. Anyone would be tired of talking.
"Yes..." First hushed back and paused. "But for now, I think you should go to sleep, my love. It's really late," He continued. He was clearly asleep before Khaotung called him and wanted to go back to sleep.
Khaotung didn't want to keep him up for any longer either so he ended up replying with, "Okay. Good night, Firfir." Firfir. Sounded like a cute cat name, didn't it? Khaotung named him that which had a whole another history behind.
"Good night, Tung," First had replied and cut the call, leaving Khaotung amused yet curious about the whole thing.
Khaotung didn't go to sleep, even though he had already said good night to First, he just couldn't. He tried but every single little sound kept him awake in awe.
In a few moments, it started raining again. Way heavier than before and Khao once again, ended up pulling an all nighter and watched the rain like a little introverted kid. He had always enjoyed the sound of rain. It reminded him of his childhood when he used to play football in the rain, in the mud.
