prologue - she loves me (not)

FOR AS LONG as Jean could remember, or for as long as high school was (precisely four years), there was not a moment when she didn't love love. I mean what wasn't there to not like about love?

Like every other hopeless romantic, Jean spent an endless amount of time imagining what it would be like when she got into a relationship.

For instance, any time she would see a couple walking down the hallway she would imagine what it would be like if that was her wrapped around his arm. It had absolutely nothing to do with the guy at all, but it had everything to do with the fact that she wanted to be someone's possible armrest... or someone's possible anything.

It wasn't like Jean didn't have a chance to have that possible someone throughout her four years of high school because she did. It's just that it was different.

Different as in the love that was seen in movies wasn't the same as it was in real life. There was no real Peter Kavinsky. There was no real Austin Ames. There was no real Patrick Verona or Cameron James. There was no real Benjamin Barry. Those men were only real when she watched the movies and read the books.

Sure there were times when she saw a cute guy and wondered what would happen if she went up to him and asked for his number. But scenarios like that were pointless. She was about to graduate high school and the thought of getting into a relationship didn't even stroll through her mind.

Instead, her thoughts were filled with college applications and supplemental essays that needed to be written. A boyfriend couldn't help with that. If anything a boyfriend would distract from that.

Though, that didn't stop her from thinking about love. Love was always on her mind. So much so that she wrote about love in her personal essay. Needless to say, it was extremely apparent that love was still on her mind no matter the situation.

The only time that love wasn't the first thing on her mind was during college decisions when she would find out if she got accepted into the universities she applied to.

It was quite funny. She had stressed herself out for months and applied to about fifteen schools because she had this fear that she wouldn't get accepted anywhere. However, she got accepted into almost every school she applied to. Her dream school had even offered scholarships!

During spring break she decided that it would be best if she visited her dream school to see if it was truly the best fit for her before she decided to fully commit. Like other people who were touring their possible future campus, excitement flowed through her body. There was so much awaiting in her future that she was excited about: the dorm rooms, the walks to class, and especially the different chances of love she would finally allow herself to have.

She wondered how her future admirers would approach her and how the sequence of events would unfold—like what he would say and what she would respond with—all while she ate a grilled cheese from the cafeteria of her future campus.

Ironically, two tables across from where Jean was sitting was a timid, dark-haired boy wondering how he could approach the girl.

"By any chance does anyone know the Maxwell-Faraday equation off the top of their head?" Jake looked up from his notes in hopes of an answer.

"Jake," Sunghoon piped. "How many times do we have to tell you that you are the only physics major here? Why would Heeseung and I know the maxi pad fart-a-day equation?"

Jake frowned. "There could've been a possibility that you knew!" He turned to Heeseung, "Do you know the Maxwell-Faraday equation?"

Heeseung's attention was quickly brought back to his table as he turned to Jake not quite registering what he had just said. "Sorry, what?"

Jake's brows slightly furrowed at the confused boy and turned into the previous direction where his eyes had last had his focus.

There sat a seemingly bubbly girl who was eating her grilled cheese alone. Jake turned back to Heeseung whose cheeks were slightly flushed from being discovered so quickly.

He laughed. "Maybe she knows the Maxwell-Faraday equation."

Sunghoon curled his fist. "If I hear you say that one more time I'm going to throw your computer across the room."

"Why don't you just go talk to her?" Jake asked, a slight smirk on his face.

Heeseung's hand caressed the back of his neck. A soft sigh escaped his lips, "I can't man. She's with her mom."

Jake turned his head once again and furrowed his eyebrows when he saw the same girl still eating her grilled cheese alone. "You must be seeing things 'cause she's clearly by herself," he laughed.

Heeseung nudged Jake's arm playfully. "Not right now but she was just with her. I'm not seeing things man I swear."

"From what I see she's all by herself and if you don't go ask for her number in the next couple of seconds I sure will."

Heeseung knew Jake was just teasing him and trying to get him to muster up the courage to quickly ask for the girl's number but the grin plastered on Jake's face said something else.

Heeseung stood up from his chair and locked his eyes on the girl. There was something about the aurora of innocence she had that he was attracted to. He had that same innocence too. And innocence like that is bound to be broken.

As he approached her, he found himself a little nervous. So nervous that by the time he got to her table he was sure he had blacked out. All he knew was that when he went and sat back down with his friends he had the name 'Jeanne' saved in his contacts.

When the group went back to their shared dorm room, he decided it was a good time to text Jeanne. Maybe to ask her how her day was or how was doing? He didn't know yet. All he was hoping for was a response.

And she fulfilled his hopes!

Conversations were never-ending between them. He liked her. She liked him. They had gotten together after a couple of months. It was perfect.

Their relationship was exactly like how Jean dreamed of.

Until it wasn't. Until that innocence that was bound to be broken was truly torn apart by the man who had had the same innocence she did.

It was then Jean decided that it was best for her to completely throw away her interpretation of love into a landfill and never get romantically involved with a boy ever again.
