Chapter 10

It was Trinity's first day back at work. She had just arrived in her office and taken off her coat when Josiah appeared to greet her, and hot on his heels was Rita.

"Thank God!" Josiah said as he fell into the chair on the other side of her desk. "I thought you had run away and were never coming back."

"You have been missed, Trinity," Rita said, sitting in the other chair next to Josiah. "How was your time off?"

"You mean other than the fact that Levi had to rush in and rescue us?" Trinity asked.

"Us? Josiah sounded accusing and was frowning as he asked the question.

"Levi didn't tell you?" Trinity looked between Josiah and Rita, feeling her throat tighten a little at their confused looks. He hadn't said a word, even to those he trusted most. It meant a lot.

They had only had to stay one day at the cabin. Levi had told his foreman where he would be and to send help once the weather cleared. Trinity had spent the rest of the week holed up in her house with Ben and Rainer. It's hadn't been ideal, but they had made it work.

"How's the new girl working out?" Trinity asked, changing the subject.

Josiah and Rita looked at one another seeking answers, but when nothing was revealed by the other, they took Trinity's hint and changed the subject.

"Early days yet," Josiah cagily said while Rita nodded her head in agreement.

"Where's her resume, what are her credentials? Is she a CPA?" Trinity fired off the questions but was met with only blank stares in return. "Neither one of you know, do you?" she asked, leaning back in her chair.

"No, Levi hired her without consulting us," Josiah confirmed.

"Can I get a copy of her resume?" Trinity asked, looking at Rita. "I am her supervisor, correct?"

"Sure," Rita agreed, pulling out her phone and sending a text.

"So, what did I miss?" Trinity asked.

"Levi found out that the thief at the hotel was the general manager. He had him arrested. It made the local news, so watch your step. Levi's a bit grumpy that his new toy has a chip," Josiah warned.

They talked a little more about the situation before Rita's assistant showed up with some papers that she handed to Rita as she eyed Trinity before leaving.

"What was that all about?" Trinity asked as she took a copy of the papers that Rita handed her.

"My guess, she thought you weren't coming back either." Josiah shrugged.

Trinity looked over the resume and wanted to groan. She had done a little bit of bookkeeping for the local nursing home, which probably meant billing, and that was fine, but the person she needed was someone who knew about budgets and taxes. Granted, it could be learned, but not quickly, which was not a great option when you needed someone yesterday.

Josiah and Rita were watching her closely, so she did her best not to give too much away.

A knock on the door frame of her office made her look up to find Levi and a beautiful, statuesque blond standing next to him. When her eyes landed on Trinity, her smile faltered.

Trinity took a moment to take in the sight of Levi. He had a fresh haircut and he looked handsome in his casual blue jeans and wool sweater with his ever-present cowboy boots. He also looked tired, so she held her tongue as she turned her attention to the woman. She was a beautiful woman and she knew it.

"Welcome back, Trinity," Levi greeted with a tired smile. "I wanted to introduce you to Dorthy Carter so that she can catch you up on all that you missed."

Dorthy's smile was firmly in place and looking a little strained.

Trinity stood up and moved around her desk, holding out her hand to Dorthy. She didn't have to start the relationship out on a bad note. Although, what she really wanted to do was spit in the woman's eye and stomp on her foot.

"Dorthy," she greeted without a smile. Trinity didn't feel like smiling, and it was best to keep the woman at a distance until she knew the lay of the land. "I was just reading your resume, its good to put a face with the name." Dorthy's handshake was limp and she released Trinity's hand as soon as possible.

She should have been catty and said something about how Levi told her up at the cabin that he had hired her, making sure the woman knew the lay of the land, and the sudden thought caught her off guard. Was she jealous? Her eyes widen slightly at the thought as she looked at Levi, who raised one of his eyebrows in a question?

"My resume?" Dorthy asked, looking from Levi to Trinity. When she saw the look they exchanged, she placed her hand on Levi's arm to draw his attention back to her and her question.

"Trinity is your direct supervisor," Rita provided as she stood. "It's good to have you back, Trinity," Rita said as she moved towards the door. "Come on, young Shaw, we need to discuss a few things, and Dorthy needs to catch up, Trinity."

Josiah stood with a grin towards Trinity. "Sure thing." Trinity watched as he patted his father on his shoulder, but she couldn't tell if it was in support or comfort.

Trinity watched them leave then moved back towards her desk, motioning for Dorthy to take a seat.

"If you'll give me about an hour. We can meet then. I'll have everything prepared." Dorthy hedged.

Trinity knew that there should be nothing to be prepared; it should all be taken care of as it was done. She also knew the woman was attempting to take the upper hand.

"Alright," Trinity agreed, playing nice. "But I need a few quick questions answered. Did you adjust the unemployment tax and pay the 941 and the state income tax?" Also, did you take care of paying the sales tax?"

They were all very simple questions that if she knew what she was doing, she should be able to answer. In the case of the income tax, Wyoming didn't have it and the company didn't pay sales tax because they didn't sell anything, and human resources always took care of payroll and the necessary taxes associated with it.

"Yes, they all got paid," Dorthy responded with a strained smile before she turned her attention towards Levi. "Levi, do you have a minute? I have a few questions."

"Trinity's back, and she can answer all of your questions. Why don't you go and prepare what you need to prepare while I catch Trinity up on a few things." He nodded to the door in a dismissal.

Dorthy shot Trinity another strained smiled before she turned to leave.

"Would you mind getting the door on your way out?" Levi asked as he moved to sit in one of the chairs across from Trinity's desk. His eyes glued to Trinity.

Trinity watched Dorthy as she closed the door behind her before she sat down and turned her attention towards Levi.

He sighed. "Ok, perhaps you were right. I shouldn't have hired Dorthy without someone else-"

Trinity raised an eyebrow.

"Without you there to help," he finished.

"But she was pretty, and she played the 'woe is me' card, and you fell for it?" Trinity nodded. "Maybe she can learn. I'll feel her out and see if we can salvage the hire. I'll talk to Rita. Perhaps if she doesn't work here, we can move her somewhere else." Trinity said as the wheels in her head started to work.

"Remember what I said about job security. This is a prime example." Levi grinned at her and Trinity's heart turned over in her chest.

She felt a sharp twinge in her heart as she realized she was in love with Levi Shaw. Lord, help her. It wasn't the time or the place for such a realization, but it was true none the less.

Along with the realization that she loved him came the truth that she could trust him. He hadn't told anyone about Ben, and earlier, with Dorthy, he had taken the high road and admitted he was wrong with absolutely no anger or embarrassment. It was the action of a very confident man.

Then one final realization hit her. She hadn't been the weak one in her marriage, Christopher had been the weak one. He had been weak with no confidence whatsoever.

It was too much at once, and Trinity's face paled as she closed her eyes.

"Are you alright?" Levi asked, leaning forward and grabbing her hand where it rested on the desk between them.

Trinity turned her hand over and squeezed his.

"I told you your job is secure," he said in an urgent voice.

"It's not that," she choked out as she shook her head. "Please, it's personal, I promise." She released his hand and sat back in her chair, staring at the blotter in front of her as she cleared her thoughts and pulled herself together.

"I'll do my best with what I have, but if I decide Dorthy is not going to work, you have to let me find a new place for her, and then we hire someone together. Agreed?" She forced herself to meet his eyes.

"Alright," he agreed, looking at her with concern. "Is it something that you want to talk about?"

Trinity shook her head, sitting up again. "Now go, you look tired. I'll take care of things on this end now that I'm back."

Levi looked at her for a moment more before deciding that she meant what she said and stood to leave.

"I am relieved you're back. The storm has caused issues at the ranch, so it's been busy."

"Go, I'm fine. We'll talk tomorrow once I have a handle on everything."

Levi gave her one more concerned look before he left.

Trinity rested her head on her arms. Why? Why did this have to happen now? Why did it have to be Levi? What was she going to do? She didn't want to quit.

Right now, she needed to take it one day at a time.

One thing she was sure of was that she had never loved Christopher Langford and knowing that meant he suddenly lost all and any power he ever had over her.

It was freeing, and she had Levi to thank for that.
