Chapter 49: My Immortal

My Immortal ~ Evanescence

•••
Beeping was the first sound Tasha could hear, after that hushed voices surrounding her became more prominent. For a moment she had forgotten what had transpired, but as her eyes opened she felt the darkness pull at her chest, her heart still breaking each moment Loki was dead.

But she had no recollection of the events.

"She's awake!"

It was Shuri's voice that brought Tasha out of her daze, slowly pushing herself to a sitting position but finding her arms would shake with each movement. She felt the bed beneath her move as it pulled her to a sitting position, her eyes finally focusing on the forms surrounding her, before focusing solely on the person who was nearest to her.

"James?"

She was immediately engulfed in strong arms, the metal arm of his holding her body tighter to him. She let out a breath, his strength overwhelming her before he noticed and let her go enough so he could look at her. "Hi."

"Hi." She replied, the smallest hint of a smile ghosting her face before she glanced at the other figures in the room, his arms still holding her close.

Another man with strong arms pulled her into a gentle side hug. "I'm glad you're alright, kiddo."

Tasha sighed contently, for the moment focussing solely on her friends. "I'm glad you're alright, Steve. I haven't seen you in quite some time."

As he pulled back, he had a solemn look on his face. "Yeah, it seems you've been quite busy."

The room fell silent as her eyes trailed along those who surrounded her. T'challa rested his hand on her shoulder in a kind greeting, while Nat and Wanda stood further back, both smiling.

Tasha then pushed herself so her legs hung off the bed, grabbing onto the railing hard as she felt how weak her body was.

"Tasha, you need rest—"

"Where's Thor? And Loki?"

There was silence as they looked at the young girl, who blinked at them in confusion. "Guys, seriously — where are they? I swear I'll kill them if they chose a new home without me!" She laughed, but it quickly faded as she saw the sad look on Bucky's face.

"Where's Loki?" Tasha asked as she looked up at James, fear filling her entire being as she saw the look on his face. The room was still and silent as he looked over to Steve. "What is it? Where is he?"

"Tasha... what do you remember?" Steve asked as he stood by the bed.

"I... I remember a purple light. I remember — " She gasped, clutching her chest. "Why do I feel this ache in my chest?" She pushed against where her heart was before letting out a sound of pain. "It's agony! Why?"

Silence befell them again as she tried to heal herself. "I don't understand." Tasha attempted to use her magic to calm her heart but it wouldn't work. "Just — is Loki okay? Where is he? Where's my brother? You guys, where the hell are they?!"

Tasha was becoming hysterical as she tried to keep the horrid memories away, but they were pushing through the seams as she felt herself shake uncontrollably. "Where is Loki?!"

James leaned down slightly, rubbing her arm gently. "Tasha, when I found you in the forest... Loki... he... he was already—"

"No..." Tasha gasped as she flung the blankets off herself, quickly sprinting out of bed. "No. Where is he?! Where is he?!"

"Tasha, you need to calm—"

"Where is he?!" Tasha screamed as the memories came flooding back. She put her hand over her mouth as all the pain overwhelmed each and every of her senses. She fell to her knees as she began to sob. "No! He can't be dead! Please — "

"I'm so sorry, Tasha."

Tasha's sobbing broke the hearts of her friends as they watched her fall apart. "You promised!" She cried as she clenched her fists. "Please, don't leave me!"

Her sobbing slowed, and quickly disappeared entirely as she leaned on her knees, looking to Steve with an empty expression.

"Where is he?"

The room fell silent once again, and Tasha took the opportunity to pull herself into a standing position, only to lose her balance. James caught her by the waist, holding her upright as her legs wobbled.

"Take me to him."

Everyone around looked at each other for a moment. Bucky, however, gazed down at her. "Tash—"

"Take me to him!" Tasha yelled, her voice cracking with each desperate word. "Please." Her voice broke, causing everyone to look her way. "Please, James. I need to see him."

Everyone was silent as they went over to Loki's medical bed. His body had healed, but he was still gone. Far away from her reach. Too far away in a place she could not go. Tasha let out a shaky breath, turning so her body rested against the bed as she held onto his hand.

"How long have I been out?"

"A few days."  Steve answered. "Bucky found you with him after a bright light came from the sky."

"I... " Tasha trailed off, deciding to just nod in recognition because her words may have failed her in that moment.

"Tasha, I know that there's a lot we have to talk about... but why hasn't his body began to die? Is it a God thing?"

Tasha laughed slightly, causing everyone to look at her in concern. "Sorry, I'm a little bit fucked up right now." She sighed, "No. My life energy is healing his body constantly. The light you saw, I've never experienced it before but when he — when he died it consumed me and brought me here with him."

"So, Loki is—"

"Dead. Yes."

Her voice was quiet as she looked at his body. Tasha couldn't stop replaying his death in her mind. Over and over again she watched as Thanos snapped his neck.

"I can't —" Tasha blinked her tears away. "I can't be here."

Quickly she left the room, feeling her entire body shake and threaten to crumble into a million pieces. She calmed slightly as she felt Bucky's hand against her shoulder.

Tasha looked back at the others for a moment before looking up at him. He gave her a gentle smile as he rubbed her shoulder soothingly.

"We'll be in the other room, okay?" Steve gave Tasha a gentle pat on her arm. She nodded to him before looking away.

Once everyone had left she let out a deep sigh. "How long have you..." She sat down on the couch, a solemn expression on her face. "...been awake?"

"A few weeks." Bucky answered as he sat next to her, leaving some space in case she didn't want him too close. He could see how fragile she was in that moment and all he wanted was to comfort her as she had done for him so many times.

"That's— That's good." Tasha nodded, her eyebrows furrowing as she thought hard. "Where I've been time went different there. I think Loki and I were there nearly two months but for everyone else in the universe it was a mere few days at most."

Tasha looked over at Bucky for a moment. He looked better than she had ever seen him. He had a tan to his skin, and the usual scowl was replaced with a calm smile and bright eyes. "You look good." She smiled happily. "I'm glad T'Chala and Shuri were able to help you."

"Me too." He smiled at her compliment. "You look beautiful, by the way."

Tasha let out a laugh. "Have you seen me?! I'm a mess, Bucky."

"Being a mess doesn't make you any less beautiful, darlin'." He set his hand over hers which was resting on her leg.

"Thanks..." She interlocked her fingers with his, leaning her head on his shoulder as she fought the tears. "I don't know what to do, James."

"We're all here for you. I'm here for you. Whatever you need."

"I missed you." Tasha said as she nuzzled her head into the crook of his neck.

"I missed you too, Tash, so damn much."

There was silence for a moment as the lovers enjoyed each other's warmth for the first time in years. Even with everything else going on, Tasha was glad that at least James... her Bucky... was alright. Better than alright.

"I don't even know if my brother is alive." She whispered as she pulled back so she could look at him. She needed his comfort, now more than ever. "I want to believe Thor is okay but after what happened to... to—" She couldn't say it, but she didn't have to. Bucky shushed her gently while pulling her into a tight hug. "I'm here, alright, doll? I got you."
